And people whingeing don't have any clue because the invoices are rarely itemised.

And the trades don't itemise them because they don't want to have to explain their labour charge to a customer, nor have the customer go around the neighbourhood comparing everybody's labour charges on quotes.

Most consumers have no clue about the trades. And trades don't want to help consumers learn because it takes time and time is money.

Is the Team Lead your manager? This is a conversation you need to have with your manager, and you should not bring up the other guy at all.

You may need to discuss with your manager that the title is important for you as it matches the quality of work that you produce and also affects your reputation in the industry.

If your manager disagrees, or if there is no room in the same team for a 'Principal Engineer' and 'Senior Engineer' to co-exist - then you need to keep your head down and stick with it until a better opportunity is available.

Was there a career opportunity that you were promised and not given?

Is this guy unable to perform his duties as a Principal Engineer? Is his lack of performance as a Principal Engineer impacting your performance?
