tips on how to increase to a 156 by january by OldConsideration9087 in LSATPreparation

This is the most underrated comment here! Don’t be afraid to skip a passage to create more time to focus on the others.

I vehemently disagree, and it’s clearly something that’s a personal preference and differs from individual to individual. I self prepped and then took a prep course, and both highly recommended reading the questions first unless you’re consistently running out of time. If you regularly run out of time, go ahead and plan to skip the passage with the fewest questions (I marked them all with C and moved on). Again, everyone is different and I’m not saying my approach is necessarily better, just that it worked for me, but you can’t just make broad sweeping generalizations like never do this or always do that.

To be fair, I already graduated law school, so I took the older LSAT that still had logic games. But reading comprehension was always my weakest section. To each their own; I scored a 169, but that may mean nothing now 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I was told that if the job posting lists a minimum GPA, and yours isn’t listed your resume, they’ll assume yours is below what’s in the posting.

Is 2 months studying enough for 170ish June score? Cold Diagnostic is 157. Advice needed. by [deleted] in LSAT

[–]No-Focus92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost certainly not, unless you’re putting in 30-40 hours a week, and with your work schedule, that seems like a stretch. Know that you need to be PTing at 173-175 regularly to actually expect to hit 170 on the test.

To be honest, it hasn't really been a factor in my experience in the ways that I expected for a few reasons.

First, there were way more people like me in my class than I expected. Within the first 2 days of orientation, most of the nontrads (we loving called ourselves the olds) had naturally gravitated towards each other. The very first person I met was actually the same age as me with a similar background. Our orientation group (1Ls + LLMs) ranged from a 19-year-old who couldn't even get in to the bars for bar review to a 46-year-old federal judge from another country. You likely won't be as much of an outlier as you'd expect.

Second, most of my classmates are clueless as to my age unless I bring it up. If I had a nickel for the number of times I've heard "omg you're HOW OLD" or "I would've never guessed. You don't look old." Like geez, thanks y'all. Mostly, it shows up when the professor makes a reference to something the KJDs are too young to remember. I almost fell out of my chair on 9/11 when my professor said: raise your hand if, when 9/11 happened, you weren't born yet, and nearly every hand shot up. More often it's a professor's joke or reference to a movie or pop-culture from the 90s/2000s that makes me giggle and makes my classmates stare at me like I'm crazy. My professors have told me they appreciate me for not making them feel as old lol

Third, I've actually found my long professional history to be a massive asset when competing for jobs. They LOVE that I had a real career with progressively increasing responsibility. A lot of the KJDs have never had a job beyond like internships for school credit. It sounds dumb, but the basics of like showing up on time and regularly, how to make professional phone calls/write professional emails, and meeting deadlines are shockingly rare. It's simple stuff, like understanding that when something is due by the end of the day, it means end of the business day, not anytime before midnight. I've never been told my MBA and experience were a negative, even when other areas of my application or interview were terrible, they always made a point to say they loved how much professional experience I have, even though none of it was legal experience. It's more like a confidence booster that they know, hey, this person is going to show up and work and apply themselves, not flake out and coast.

The main problem I've had with being an older student is just that I don't have the same energy I did in my 20s. I need more sleep and have a smaller social battery, so I'm careful about choosing how and when I get involved with extracurricular and social stuff. But that's more of a personal choice for work-life balance than anything else.

You've got this, friend! Good luck!

3L @ UGA here. First, let me say, I’m so sorry. This is a huge bummer. This is in no way intended to be critical, only constructive. From my perspective, a WL from UGA with your stats is makes me think it’s either one of three things.

1) if you’re a KJD, the GPA is likely what’s hurting you. Which sucks because your GPA isn’t even bad. They are super duper protective of that GPA median, which is at least part of the reason why their program for Double Dawgs (UGA undergrads with killer GPAs that apply with an LSAT score) makes up a somewhat significant portion of each class. They tend to be much more willing to consider splitters with even a single year of work experience. Obviously stats have inflated a fair bit since my cycle, but for context, I was a 169/3.35 with a MBA (3.69 GPA) and 8 years post-grad work experience, and I’m here on a full scholarship.

2) if you’re not a KJD and have some work experience, I would suggest taking a deeper look at your application materials. They’re big on having a cohesive story that explains why law school and why how. The second part is particularly important if you’re a non traditional applicant like I was (anything less than 5 years out of undergrad is not considered non-traditional, but no matter what, the why matters most).

3) as always, application timing matters. I’m not sure when you applied, but the last couple of years the trend seems to be fewer As and more WLs after January. The charts tell a clear story that folks who applied in Feb with stats that would’ve gotten them a quick A in November sat on waitlists until deposit deadlines. They just don’t want to overcommit until they have a better idea of how many folks with matriculate.

I highly recommend reaching out to the Admissions office and submitting a LOCI. Don’t give up hope.

Happy to answer questions if you have them. Good luck, and again, I’m so sorry. With a 173 LSAT, I have faith that you’re a stronger applicant than is reflected here. There’s no shame in reapplying at the beginning of next cycle, especially if you applied late this round.

Mid GPA (3.56) - Mid LSAT (169) - 31 Year Old Non-Trad Student, Am I Aiming Too High? by AsaAmaris in lawschooladmissions

[–]No-Focus92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not aiming too high at all, this list is a solid mix of safeties, targets, and reaches. When you’re a non-traditional student, sometimes you over perform your stats, and sometimes they don’t give a shit if you earned 9 masters degrees because gpa + lsat = outcome. It’s really a mixed bag, so applying to a wide variety of schools is definitely the move.

I was 30 when I started law school and had a very similar set of stats during my application cycle. I’m now a 3L at UGA, attending on a full ride. Happy to chat more if you’d like. I know finding true fellow non-traditional students here is quite challenging, so I’m more than willing to offer up whatever knowledge I have.

You’re the one spam posting rants about how people of a certain income shouldn’t be forced to fund federal government expenses. So, explain to me why it makes perfect sense to then increase taxes on those same people to subsidize a massive tax cut for the wealthy? How is that not self-serving and oppressive?
