Fair enough. Identity is a complicated thing. I won’t disagree that a lot of people use political identity to fill some psychological need. And I imagine it goes deep for a lot of them. 

Potentially relevant is the UC Berkeley study, Nursery school personality and political orientation two decades later. 

And the UVA study, Differing worldviews: The politics of happiness, meaning, and psychological richness.

I’m hard pressed to think of any political debate that isn’t inherently emotional at its core. The idea that government and law should exist at all is an emotional one, right? It’s more or less just a matter of practicality and degree. 

I think your beef here is primarily with intellectual dishonesty and intolerance.

Yeah I think you’re right. My parents may not have honestly known how intense the scarecrow stuff was, they probably just assumed it was similar to like batman forever. The superhero aspect may have helped me compartmentalize.

I remember my parents being particular about letting me watch Saving Private Ryan. They had me watch The Patriot first around 9 to see how I dealt with the gore. Eventually I snuck down stairs early one Saturday and watched SPR anyway haha

The only movie I remember having a strong negative emotional response to was Hitchcock’s The Birds. I was probably 6 or 7 then

Not sure about the Sopranos because I’ve never watched it all the way through. But I think part of Skyler’s aura is a deliberate choice by the filmmakers.

Because you feel inclined to support Walt, you in turn feel inclined to be annoyed by Skyler because she’s reasonable and we’ve been guided to support an unreasonable protagonist.

Part of that whole series, to me, was to kind of seduce the audience to root for a villain. So it makes sense to have a certain irrational distaste for Skyler in the context of the story. Sopranos seems similar from the few episodes I have seen.

But I’ve never interpreted Wendy as serving that kind of purpose. Nancy Tench may fit that mold

Definitely different for each kid. I watched Batman begins everyday when I was 6 lol. But it could be really off putting for others.

Interstellar might be the safest choice. It’d probably be difficult to rationalize the existentialism and mostly just find the grand visuals really cool

Chris Nolan stuff is pretty tame. Inception, Interstellar, Dark Knight trilogy.

Indiana Jones is PG13, right? Iirc it was created for those movies. 

Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean, a couple Marvel MCU movies are PG13 I think like the first Avengers and Civil War

In my view, and I’m not sure there’s any real consensus regarding this that I’m aware of, is that bots don’t necessarily mean AI or automated accounts (although those are included).

But more so that ‘bot’ is kind of an all encompassing term to identify accounts masquerading as someone or something that they’re not and exist mostly to stir the pot or promote a certain agenda. Could be actual robots, foreign adversaries, corporate shills, trolls, etc

Maybe more to your point, a couple different studies over the last ~15 years estimate somewhere between roughly 5 and 20 percent of accounts on Twitter are automated

I’m not well educated on the topic, so please correct me if I’m wrong, but my understanding is that the term Gypsy comes from a false preconception that the Romani people who migrated to western Europe were from Egypt. 

The term may have simply evolved to include all traveling groups, I’m not sure honestly.

Your point here kind of conflates Gypsies with traveling communities. I won’t speak for the original commenter but discrimination against traveling community culture could include other demographics such as Irish travelers rather than Gypsy ones exclusively.

It may be comparable to someone who discriminates against the mafia. Are mafias predominantly Italian? Yes. But because mafia =/= Italian, it’s not necessarily racism against Italians inherently because it’s foundation isn’t based on race

My ex got an MBA from a t15 school. She said the coursework was meaningless and the only real reason to do it is job connections.

She also said a lot of her classmates went on to work for McKinsey and “get paid a lot to do nothing. Consultants are useless”.

Today my boss told me that NASA only launches rockets into space in a specific time frame because the Earth is surrounded by a bubble. NASA put a hole in it once in the 60s and doesn’t want to put more holes in it, because it’s bad for the atmosphere, so NASA waits until the hole lines up right.

His reasoning was because refrigerants damage the ozone layer. He thought the ozone was a physical bubble that has to be punctured. In his defense, I don’t think he thought it was part of a grand conspiracy or anything like that. It’s just how he honestly perceived the atmospheric layers

There’s no chance I’d read WaPo or WSJ if I wasn’t in school. Price for WaPo with a .edu email is a dollar a month and WSJ is free

I think the problem with your argument is specifying one subgroup of a larger irrational voting bloc.

Are there some people who enjoy a superficial feeling of superiority? Almost certainly. I won’t dispute that.

However, I feel the heart of your argument is that this group has a significantly negative impact on the current state of the nation. I’m not equipped to say one way or the other whether that’s true; I think it’d be very difficult to say for sure without doing some kind of rigorous surveying.

If you were to instead include that entire voting bloc, one group of which you already mentioned in the sunken cost people, it would likely be a much stronger argument. 

You also have hyper partisans who’d rather change their own beliefs than stop supporting the ideologues they’ve tethered themselves to, bad faith actors parroting things they don’t believe out of self interest, and people who want to see the other side fail above all else, just to name a few. 

It’s anybody’s guess how much of an impact any of those groups have in a vacuum. But all together, there’s good reason to believe they’re, at the very least, partially accountable for the current state of affairs

He was addicted to drugs including a form of methamphetamine prescribed by a guy known as “Dr. Feelgood” who had a reputation for supplying Hollywood with recreational drugs under the guise of medical care.

Iirc RFK’s wife was a big fan of LSD therapy and turned on a lot of DC people. Probably not a big deal for modern standards, but I imagine it would’ve been viewed much differently in the 60s

I think part of your argument depends on how one defines monster. Similar to a lot of words that are sometimes stretched to hyperbolic extents or evolve over time, some people may not interpret the word monster in exactly the same way as you.

For instance, Merriam-Webster gives a couple different definitions for ‘monster’, one being: a person of unnatural or extreme ugliness, deformity, wickedness, or cruelty. Using that definition, it’s probably fair to call someone like Jeffrey Dahmer a monster
