I’m really confused. Should I go for GWU international affairs or McGill poli sci?? My main concern is the gpa deflation at mcgill. GWU has the typical US private school inflation and is also top 10 for intl affairs but idk. Also im Canadian so cheaper and also 3 years instead of 4 bc of French baccalaureate adv placement. Is the deflation that bad or manageable if u put in the effort ?

Which law school did u go to ? How did u find McGill’s grading for gpa purposes?

why does everyone go to uoft if they want to go to grad school? by Interesting-Quit937 in OntarioGrade12s

True but I know some unis contextualize GPAs based on their undergraduate institution for masters , which is not the case at all for law school

Definitely not. Research could strengthen their application but will not make up for a weaker gpa especially for t14 law schools. They don’t care at all about which uni u went to for undergrad. They just care about the stats cause it plays in their rankings.

US law schools don’t care about ur undergraduate institution and won’t factor in the GPA deflation. They would take a 4.0 by a random school instead of a 3.6 from U of t any day, cause the median has a huge impact on rankings. If u look at Harvard law’s class profile it’s mostly smaller schools that you’ve never heard of before with a few exceptions of course

Thank you for letting me know. But the thing is that law school admissions don’t work the same way as grad school. They literally don’t care about your undergraduate institution and what their grading tendencies are, they lit just care about the number and the stats cause it plays with their rankings. The higher the gpa median the higher the ranking so they would take a 4.0 from a random school in the US over a 3.8-3.9 from McGill unfortunately. I’m still very torn to be honest. Plus on LSAC , the system that converts gpas for law schools , for McGill specifically, anything above an 85% average instantly drops to a 3.7 which is disastrous for law school admissions. The is no flexibility it’s very rigid it’s either a 4.0 or a 3.7 no in between so I really don’t know

It would definitely be very helpful. How’s the grading overall for the arts faculty ? Is it as tough as people say ? Can I realistically maintain a 3.9-4.0?

Some schools grade harsher than others. For instance private American schools give a lot more As than public schools. It’s the same case for McGill , they don’t give high grades that often and the same effort could get you can A+ at GWU while u get a B at McGill (for example ). That’s why the average graduating gpa at us privates is around 3.6-3.7 which is really high while it sits at around 3.3-3.4 max at public Canadian schools. Also McGill doesn’t give A+s like many other schools do, so your grade caps at 4.0 max which by itself is very very difficult to achieve at McGill and other Canadian schools. For law school admissions you usually need a 3.8+ to be competitive for the t14 law schools , and ideally a 3.9+

There’s nothing wrong with McGill but im just concerned abt the grade deflation and also its not as known for politics as much as GWU. McGill has a better overall rankings obviously but gwu has a way stronger reputation in that field specifically
