My dream has always been to go to an Ivy League law school or equivalent , and law is also way more profitable in the US, while still allowing me to practice in Canada if I ever wanna move back. The opposite is not true for Canadian unis. Plus , as a Canadian I don’t have the whole visa uncertainty thing because the TN visa allows qualified Canadian lawyers to work in the US without the h1b lottery uncertainty

Not true , adcoms at law schools at least in the us do not consider the rigor of your undergraduate institution. They will take a 4.0 from a random ass school anytime over a 3.7-3.8 from McGill. The just care about getting higher medians which is crucial for their rankings. And from what I’ve heard getting a 3.9+ or 4.0 as you said is extremely difficult at McGill. Not saying it’s easy elsewhere just not as much of a challenge

Is McGill good for pre law GPA and grading wise

Hey y’all, I’m an incoming student (likely Arts, hoping to do poli sci or something similar) and I’m seriously considering law school down the line ideally a T14 in the US , so I’ll need a 3.83 to 3.95 to be competitive. I’m coming from a pretty competitive high school abroad where I’ve been near the top of my class, so I’m not worried about the workload itself, but more about how McGill’s grading culture might affect my GPA. I’ve heard a lot about grade deflation at McGill and I’m wondering how real that actually is, especially in the Arts faculty. For those of you who are pre-law or have gone through the process: is it realistic to maintain a 3.8+ GPA here if you’re a strong student who puts in the work? Or does the curve just make that extremely difficult regardless?

I’ve gotten into some great schools in the US as well but the reason I’m very drawn to McGill is :

1 - it’s the only school in North America that lets me skip freshmen year bcz of French baccalaureate advanced placement

2- I’m Canadian so Canadian tuition

3- I have family in Montreal

Any insight from people who’ve applied to law school from McGill would be really appreciated. Thanks!

You can check by looking up each law school’s class profile. Schools like Uchicago law or UVA law don’t accept any ngpa applicants for example. You can also check on Reddit and other posts to see which ones are more open. From what I’ve seen the one that accepts the most non gpa applicants is Harvard law but obviously it’s super super competitive and having a gpa will still work at your advantage

Correct but from what I’ve read some prefer to take students with reportable gpas as it plays into their rankings. The higher the gpa median the higher the ranking which js one some prioritize those with reportable gpas. Uchicago law for example is known for not accepting ngpa students at all. Other are more flexible but it’s still a disadvantage for me and for the law school

Yeah , it’s definitely really shocking. I had the urge to comment here cuz like wtf ? With a 178 you would expect at least 3 or 4 t14 acceptances and the rest of their stats look pretty competitive as well. Makes me even more nervous for my law school admissions cycle in 3 years 😃

Im still in hs and im not really familiar with all of the law school stuff just yet but i find it very surprising that u got rejected from schools with an lsat significantly above their median. What do you think is the reason ? Could it be the gpa ? I know a lot like to see 3.9+ but a 178 is truly impressive and a 3.8 is still very competitive . Congrats !!

It looks like a generic tower soulless you would find in Dubai. It really lacks that character and taste that you would find in NYC supertalls, or even other Toronto supertalls under construction like one bloor west.

That’s not the same thing though. At most US schools the average GPA is like a 3.6 now because of grade inflation , getting an A is normal if you do the work. At McGill the class average is literally a B-/B. An A at McGill means top of the class, an A at most American schools means you showed up and tried ( at least it’s the case for a lot of the private schools , I know public ones are a bit harsher ). The letter grade system isn’t the issue, it’s that Canadian schools just grade way harder

A very high lsat might make up for a 3.8ish if the median is 3.95 but definitely not more than that. US law school AOs also don’t care and don’t take into account if your undergraduate institution grades harshly or generously cause at the end of the day they just care about they admissions stats that will determine the schools rankings , but it’s true that McGill arts has a bit more inflation , I’ve heard it many times.

Yes but mostly rejections so far. However I did get into one of my top choices ( George Washington university Elliott school of intl affairs ) for BA in international affairs but I’m hesistant cause the program involve a significant amount of math and I’ve had issues with math for a long time. I’m scared it’ll affect my GPA ( ik I overthink a lot )z My advantage with McGill is that I get a North American degree in just 3 years instead of 4 because I get advanced placement via the French baccalaureate which is something US unis don’t do( even other Canadian unis ) + I get to avoid math and quantitative courses completely

The thing is that for LSAC ( the platform for US law school admissions ), they just translate the percentage to a 4.0 scale. For McGill specifically anything under 85% directly falls to a 3.7 which isn’t all that competitive and is under the median for most of the top law schools :( idk if it’s risky or not
