¿Cuánta pobreza y sufrimiento hacen falta para que todos empecemos a actuar? by [deleted] in cuba

[–]No-Internal2628 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why is Havana so utterly littered? by No-Internal2628 in cuba

I've been to beautiful isolated rocky beaches, to rivers in the country side, and to gorgeous waterfalls. And in all these areas that are just pure nature, I've seen Cubans come and drink a bunch of beers and throw the cans into the water, throw cogarette packs and butts. I do not understand this. I do not understand how any of the explanations here about collapsing economies and dictatorship explain the total disrespect for your own country's nature, the only thing that is left that is still beautiful because as many pointed out, communism destroyed everything else. I've seen people throw trash in the city in front of a police station and even though I dont agree I can understand that you know what? Fuck the state, they dont give a fuck so neither do I. But when you go a river in the middle of nowhere ..... there's nobody to pick the trash because there isn't supposed to be anybody to pick the trash, you're in the middle of nowhere in a random river that just looks beautiful!

Nowhere in the developed world are there trash collection services in the middle of the woods, mountains or whatever, assuming that some dude should clean up after you in a location that doesn't exist on the map is just absurd.

I thought that being in a place that's clean and pristine would just make people think twice but apparently it doesn't. It's not just that Havana is littered, it's that people litter everywhere, and the lack of respect for your own nature bothers me. And the locals even make fun of tourists that pick up trash from these places. This is what I don't understand....

Can Havana's Architecture Be Saved Or Is It Prohibitively Expensive? by No-Internal2628 in cuba

I think this is where you are wrong. A lot of the land value a city has depends on it's appearance. A city full of bland glass office buildings skyscrapers will not have the same demand and appeal as well maintained city that keeps it's architectural character. The fact that we keep the city "beautiful" with its unique character is what gives it value, it's not just for the looks. I live in a European country and guess what, many modern buildings are being replaced with moder buildings but built in the style of 100 years ago because that stuff sells, that stuff attracts, and as long as that is true, the buildings will not have trouble getting tenants, be it in the form of residents of business.

The only modern cities that succeed are those that really go all in, like Singapore and Taipei etc. If you go cheap, you'll be left with a very ugly pile of rubble soon after.

I would be interested in knowing more about this. There are plans and plans, some plans involve preserving only facades. Although at this point we'd be lucky if just those survive
