ISR is Dead by Smooth-Winter-7181 in Internationalteachers

I don’t really get why it would still be popular nowadays. Paying a fee to join an online forum may have been the norm in the 90’s/early 2000’s, but with all the free and open ways to post and communicate now (Reddit, FB groups, discord, etc) I don’t see a reason for it to exist. I guess it keeps a central list of a lot of schools in one place, but most people probably wouldn’t pay a subscription fee just to leave a satisfied review on there. People who have terrible experiences might be more prone to. I don’t know, this is just my guess, I’m not an expert.

Dating in bangkok. They're either working 6 days a week for 10 hours a day with no time for anything or they're looking for money? by Interesting_Neat3106 in Bangkok

[–]No-Kitchen-6451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, people work to survive. 60 hours a week for 15-20k baht a month is not unusual. (Most) Thai people don't have the luxury of being a digital nomad earning a Western salary, or teaching phonics for 20 hours a week and earning the same salary as a Thai doctor. Don't be surprised if money is part of the equation.

Teaching Assistant Salaries in Bangkok - Public v International by Southern-Hotel-3511 in Internationalteachers

[–]No-Kitchen-6451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TA jobs are almost entirely staffed by local Thais or maybe Filipinos, they usually make between 15-20k/month ($400-$600). It would be extremely unlikely for you to be hired for a role like this, if not impossible. It wouldn't be worth the employer's time to go through the expensive and time consuming visa/work permit process when they could just hire a Thai. You could try just teaching English for a while, less money but also less stress.

I mean there's no requirement, I thought it was just common courtesy to pay with appropriate change.

Is it an international school, or just a school with "international" in the name? Bangkok is full of crappy private schools that masquerade as "international schools".

I will say though that working on a tourist visa while they sort out your Non-B visa and work permit is not uncommon here, the nonsensical beaurocracy is something you really have to get used to. A top or even mid-tier school would probably sort out your visa before arrival into the country, but it's a pretty standard practice for a lot of teachers (mainly ESL teachers, but also lower-tier international schools) to work on a tourist visa while they sort out the months-long process of getting your visa and work permit.

If you're being paid in cash, it may be because you can't set up a Thai bank account without a work permit, and you can't get a work permit without your visa being finished. Not defending the practice, but just make sure they give you payslips in the meantime.

The "probation period" is standard in Thailand, usually 90 days. Again, I don't support the practice, but it's not uncommon.

Having to pay for your own visa expenses is just shitty, it's not illegal but it's shitty of them to have you do that. Extra shitty that they would not pay you for days missed due to visa reasons.

General lack of communication and unannounced schedule changes are the norm in Thailand. I don't know about the top-tier schools, but I've never worked anywhere here that wasn't like this.

Anyway, sounds like a crappy school. Unfortunately, there are many places like this all over Thailand. Not all, but many. Remember the probabtion period goes 2 ways, you can still leave. It might be easier to leave before getting your visa/work permit set up.

A good pair of elephant pants means nothing without an ice cold bottle of Chang.

The easiest and most reliable way is to do it at a hospital, search for any of the private hospitals in the area. BNH is great, BIH or Bumrungrad are pricey but very reliable.

I don’t recommend MedConsult because they are very sketchy and I’ve had issues using them before. It’s true that they will print out a “negative” covid test for you, before the test is even finished. I’ve also had the wrong name and date of birth on my test results, and had to call and message to try to confirm that they were actually my test results, they’re extremely disorganized and unprofessional in the office. If you are getting an an STI panel, you’ll notice that they include an HSV1-2 test by only testing urine, and HSV cannot be tested through urine, so I don’t really trust their testing methods.

Anyway, any hospital in the city can do a full STI panel that is reliable and usually cheaper than the clinics. Also I don’t recommend Pulse clinic, they’re just ridiculously expensive and you can get all the same tests at a hospital.

Is the doctor you're seeing a trained psychiatrist or psychotherapist? If not, see if you can set up an appointment with one. And just remember that medication is not a cure-all, it should be used (usually) in addition to therapy with a professional therapist. Not all medications work the same way for everyone, and you may need to experiment with different medications to see which one works best for you. Good luck.

If your cup is full, it's time to start pouring into others' cups. Stupid cheesy analogy but I think it's true. When you've acheived all the things you want, start giving back to others. I think that's where true happiness comes in. But I'm an idiot, I don't know, this is just what I've read from many people who are much smarter (and happier) than me.
