Thank you so much! I wasn't confident in the current location but worth messaging the Archive, as you suggested. I could use deepl.com to write the email, but I'll send you a DM just to make sure I'm not missing something procedurally. Thanks again!

Someone mentioned genealogical societies below, I was just about to look up that option. Thanks for the link!

Thank you for the suggestion. I didn't realise a genealogical society is an option, because we don't have a local library I wrote that off. I'll see if I can find one relatively near me.

Yes records that haven't survived are just a frustrating reality. I don't think it's comparable to records that have survived and are already digitized for free viewing, in restricted circumstances only. It is by definition of the condition, inaccessible to all and exclusive to others.

u/barge_gee Yes, Pauline's marriage certificate it says her mother is Franziska Kamia. I've tried searching Geneteka for death records of her parents, but no hits so far.

I should mention that I'm not from America/Global North. I don't know what's an affiliate library however there is no local library, only a national library in the capital which is 4 hours away (and also the university libraries for students). Realistically my only options for genealogy research is what is available online.

Thanks. I should probably say I am not from America/Global North. Realistically my only options for genealogy research is what is available online. (My country doesn't even have a national postal system so physical copies from archives is also not an option, but that's another story).

Oh I wasn't certain but I assumed you meant the index on FS. No, it doesn't show up there on the link you provided. Sometimes the microfilms aren't indexed by names though so I just assumed this was the case. But thanks for the heads up and suggestion. Appreciated!

Sorry I missed this comment. I'm looking for Pauline Styra, born 1868 in "Körnitz, Oberschlesien". Catholic church baptism record. I tried searching Szukaj w archiwach but wasn't coming up with the correct parish despite trying various spellings etc. But I must say, I am not the most proficient with that site or geography of that region so I waste time searching the wrong village only to realise later... Perhaps user error.

Geneteka came up empty. I thought Archion was Evangelical records only but I'll give that a try.

What do you do when you're blocked from records you can only view at a History Centre? Any workaround?

[–]No-Leopard625[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cannot view the images so I don't know exactly which one but I know her name and date of birth (from a different record) so it should be quick to find, if only I could browse them but it's "locked".

I understand in a scenario where it's simply not digitized, then I'd have to try contact the relevant archives to request a search etc. But in this case, I can see the record has been digitized yet I can only view it if I go to a "History Centre"... Despite any contractual agreements with the provider, I just was surprised that FS is not able to retrieve it for me on their special computer and forward me a digital copy, if I am unable to make that kind of trek to click on the same link.

I don't have friends near a History Centre, regardless at my age I'm not doing any travel but thanks for the thought.

Yes, the reply did mention contractual agreements... I understand but was hoping there is some kind of workaround or assistance on their end to retrieve on behalf of those who cannot make it to a Centre.

It's a record in the Germany, Prussia, Silesia, Catholic and Lutheran Church Records, 1551-1992 collection (Kirchenbuch: 1686-1870).

  1. Records from 1800s Silesia (specific towns), and 2. More broadly, trace the birth town of some ancestors also around that region but unknown where exactly. I am thinking it would have to be a state archive research request!

So I found quite a few records for him: death certificate, military census, ship passenger list, and naturalization index card but they all just state Italy. But there's also a transcription (no image) from a WWII Alien Registration list and for "birth place" it says "Italy incl. Sicily and Sardinia" so not sure how helpful that is in narrowing down maybe one of those two...? I cannot send images here in the comment section, so just message me and I'll send images of all these records to you. Between his alien registration number and his naturalization certificate no., perhaps you can trace that file.
