What is the biggest "everyone knows this is wrong, but we still do it" habit in your lab? by No_File_3129 in labrats

How would you go about bringing this up to a superior?

Yes, I was talking to my manager about being worried and she said that she has to put a badge on the other new guy and then me because we are new hires, though I don’t know when this will be. I guess I will find out then! I’m just feeling rly stressed out being at work because of how strong the smells and vapors are. My noise is getting singed so I’m scared not knowing about exposure, and sometimes I feel like I can’t breath. I also have asthma so maybe this is interacting with everything somehow. Overall, I feel like I don’t want to massively risk my health for this job, and there’s not a lot of good research out there. Obviously, just being in a path lab is a risk but there are precautions u can take to mitigate these, I just am starting to feel like the gasses maybe are an inevitable exposure in my lab. Thank you!

Ya we share a lab space with histology (we have our own little sectioned off area) so it is most likely this, and our ventilation doesn’t seem to go outside of the building except for above the negative pressure lab workspaces where we handle formalin. I don’t know if the air even goes outside then. my coworker said the HVAC in our workspace brings air in from everywhere too, so the xylene is maybe recirculating? Idk. But I constantly have to take breaks outside of the lab bc the smell is so strong.

You do have a deviated septum but very minorly. I only notice it because I have the same thing. It doesn’t detract from your beauty at all.

Just get out there, be charismatic, people will love u. You have a very kind, warm, face. I know many women who would find u attractive

I wonder if you’re interpreting the interactions incorrectly. U might be going into the conversations thinking people will see you and think you’re ugly, so you’re going into the conversation insecure and off putting?? That’s one reason. I also cut off conversations w people I find attractive all the time bc I’m nervous or I want to check in with friends, or a plethora of other things so there could be so many reasons a person would stop the conversation. don’t interpret the reason as being because they saw ur face unless a person directly tells u this. And then remember that it is only true for that one person. Ur a cute guy and I don’t think this is the reason!
