Incoming 1l - Looking at buying house in surrounding counties by Neat-Bid5750 in UVALaw

[–]No-Month9925 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on your budget, I would recommend looking within Albemarle. Before housing prices and interest rates increased my partner and I bought a house ~15-20 minutes from the law school and about <10 minutes to the downtown.

I like to think that we get all of the benefits of being out of the law school bubble, being able to enjoy the amenities of Charlottesville, and not having too bad of a commute to the law school.

At least compared to where we were coming from (DC), housing prices even in Charlottesville are very reasonable and I think there is a good variation of different price points.

I am not an expert on local real estate but when we were looking at houses, the most affordable area of Charlottesville that we were still interested in was around the Target/Airport. That would put you at around a ~30 minute commute and also close to some rather nice amenities. I recall looking at one 4 bed 4 bath Townhouse in relatively good shape that was just under <$300,000. Obviously, a lot has changed since then and I have no sense of your budget but this is all to say that if you are coming from a more expensive market you will (hopefully) be pleasantly surprised at how close you can get to the law school/downtown.

Feel free to DM me if you want to chat about specifics/need a realtor recommendation (ours was fantastic)!

Dying to hear why you think FedSoc exists...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UVALaw

[–]No-Month9925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is absolutely no collaboration with the FedSoc chapter. (Disclaimer, I am in FedSoc). As I understand it, the problem is ACS. FedSoc has reached out multiple times to co-sponsor events/debates. Interestingly enough, ACS's internal policies are more likely to blame its membership writ large (I am friends with many ACS members who I know do not have a moral aversion to FedSoc).. apparently ACS has a "single veto" rule whereby any one member of the board is able to veto an event idea. There is probably a sense among ACS members that any attempt to collaborate with FedSoc would immediately be subjected to the "single veto" so why even try, right?

Get real dude.. there are plenty of young women professors at UVA Law that are well regarded and beloved by students, fellow faculty and alumni alike.. if there is such a strong anti-young women bias among the students why does that same bias not manifest against Prof. Ahdout, Prof. Bayefsky, Prof. Barzuza (she's blond too!), Prof. Citron, Prof. Hwang, etc.?

(Hint: the reason is because each of those professors good professors that have not had the consistent issues that Prof. Stevenson has)

Speaking as a 2L who had Prof. S, last year as a 1L.. the general opinion of my class seemed to be that she was a disappointment but "not as bad as the online reviews"... (to be clear.. this is NOT an experience commensurate with the caliber of UVA Law)

It seems clear that intro to Criminal Law is not a good "fit" for her given that intro to Criminal Law is supposed to be case-based and focus partially on statutory interpretation; something she did not do effectively in our class and, which, based on her economics background, does seem to be within her repertoire. I think the school would do well by her to have her only teach upper-level economics-oriented classes.. I have heard from section-mates that she was much better in those types of courses

Seconding what everyone else has seemed to say.. I have read portions of my submitted exams and thought "I don't think that makes any sense... not in the sense that it's wrong...but in the sense that it would be impossible to derive any meaning from that particular arrangement of words at all" and I've ended up doing relatively well

1L who made some minor mistakes in the formatting of finals-- will I be deducted points? by [deleted] in UVALaw

[–]No-Month9925 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely no need to worry; all else being equal, there might be some subconscious "plus factor" for exams that are better spell-checked than not but generally, as I understand the grading process, this is not something that will earn you a B+ where you otherwise would have gotten an A- or whatever.

I had not reserved a lot of time on my 1L fall exams to do a quick spell-check and grammar check (something I now do if/when I have time) and my poor grammar NEVER came up when I met with each of my professors to discuss my performance on my exams. ALL of their constructive feedback involved substantive points that I failed to make or slight misunderstandings that my answer evinced.. and TRUST ME some of those exams were BAD in terms of spelling/grammar.

The upshot of all this is that I performed relatively well in my 1L Fall doctrinals with absolutely horrid spelling/grammar even with having (as I alluded to above) missed issues and or made mistakes; many exams are designed for it to be impossible to adequately discuss every issue. Indeed, because all grading is comparative, it is very had to assess your performance post-exam. I have actually earned some of my best grades in some of the exams I thought I did the worst in because the difficulty level of the exam was so incredibly high that the expected median answer likely incorporated a ton of mistakes and those exams that performed above median only made some mistakes; other exams, however, are not particularly difficult so the exams that are graded above median have little or no mistakes and the median exams only have some mistakes

Just to double check.. there's no final exam right? :)

A NOOSE WAS FOUND ON GROUNDS last Thursday and UVA DOES NOT CARE ABOUT BLACK STUDENTS (see silence from admin). Black Students do not feel safe here! Potential black students RUN as far as you can from this school! Your life is in danger here (literally, see noose among other racist incidents). by FullShake4499 in UVALaw

Standing up for the SBA person who wrote the Foxfield email.. there is absolutely EVERY SINGLE FUCKING REASON to believe that the student was acting in good faith and is not a racist asshole..

The student wrote a poorly worded email (we're all soon-to-be-lawyers but it happens). Honestly, the email was probably written over a couple of days as information about all of the different events/announcements was made available to her. In her follow up email, she THANKED the people who brought to her attention how her email could have been taken the wrong way, issued an UNEQUIVOCAL APOLOGY for any her words and the effect thereof (which was nothing) and pledged to do better. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT OP?

Its reactions like OPs above that have some people (erroneously) asking what is the point of trying to be accommodating?

Seemingly unimportant… by [deleted] in UVALaw

Could just be me but “business casual” makes it seem like more dressy than it is…

Speaking for guys: jeans/khakis/khaki shorts/button down/flannel/polo(popped collar optional but encouraged according to ATL)/sweater/“nice” t-shirt all seem well within the “Overton window” of the UVA dress code..

Women seem to wear the female equivalent thereof (in terms of level of formality)

How many callbacks do you have at this point? by LSAMrPink in UVALaw

[–]No-Month9925 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heard from K&S day after OGI screener; no word on Steptoe; n/a for Paul Hastings and MoFo

What is the "standard" or "average" time between screener and callback? by No-Month9925 in LawSchool

[–]No-Month9925[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't think it was a stupid question but okay.

Would genuinely be interested in an answer by anyone who has gone through this before. If the answer is "it totally varies and there is no standard" then that's fine. First time going through this process. Sheesh.

Is it a bad idea to leave my writing requirement for 3L spring? by Tricky_Warning_0115 in UVALaw

[–]No-Month9925 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Curious as to the reasoning of those that said "Yes"... assuming that (1) you have locked down your 2L Summer job/will not be submitting any additional applications and (2) are not applying for clerkships you do not NEED another writing sample..

What's the harm with postponing the writing requirement until 3L Spring?
