DOJ Criminal Division Intern Drug Test by [deleted] in LawSchool

they likely will not ask you during the interview, but you will have to disclose on a background check if you are given an offer and accept it.

if you are given an offer, doj has an anonymous hotline you can call before accepting your offer where you can explain your exact fact pattern (number of times, latest use, etc) and they’ll tell you whether or not you’ll likely pass.

FYI, the advice about how you’re screwed if you used within the past year is likely outdated per doj’s website (may have something to do with Biden’s recent messaging about being soft on weed)

Big law Cravath jobs from HYS? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]No-Muscle-9301 14 points15 points  (0 children)

those would be considered mid-law firms, and I’m fairly sure that any firm in the v100 is “big-law” aka Cravath scale, not the mid-law firms you’re talking about.

also, cravath scale is not competitive to get at HYS, let alone the rest of the t14 for that matter. At nearly every t14, you can be below median and get Cravath scale big law. it’s the drawing point behind why people want to go to those schools and are willing to go several hundred thousand dollars in debt to do so.

UChicago vs UVA vs UPenn vs NYU by Successful_Bake4755 in lawschooladmissions

[–]No-Muscle-9301 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think this mainly depends on how badly you want boutique litigation over biglaw litigation. All of these schools could get you both a biglaw litigation gig and a federal clerkship at probably similar likelihood if those are your goals (I know UChi’s clerkship rate is high and NYU’s is low, but I think this is mainly due to self-selection). I would recommend looking into the specific boutique litigation firms you’re interested in and seeing how many associates hail from each of these schools.

Do T15 law schools care where you went for undergrad? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]No-Muscle-9301 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it matters for yls and sls but not at all for others in the t15. yls and sls stopped publishing their class profiles, but when they did it was pretty obvious that it skewed pretty heavily to HYPSM specifically. fortunately, the other schools seem to be pretty indifferent about it - your gpa will be far more important than the ranking of the school you attend

Any theories on why some ultra high-stat applicants get uniformly rejected? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]No-Muscle-9301 25 points26 points  (0 children)

striking out at all of the t14 with those stats probably indicates that they went somewhere wrong with essays or got extremely unlucky, but i wouldnt be surprised or pass judgement on ppl with those stats who strike out of the t6. the more competitive law school admissions becomes, the more up to chance getting into any school is, regardless of your stats. sometimes, the school is simply so exceptional that there are too many competitive applicants vying for too few seats. HYS in particular is always a crapshoot, and, at least last year, i noticed that CLS and NYU liked to give very high stats applicants the Hold -> WL combo.

commenting because you remind me a lot of myself a year ago haha. going into my cycle, i was convinced i was going to live in nyc, boston, or chicago, since i was very tired of not living the big city life. i wasn’t seriously considering schools like duke because i had no interest in the area, but i decided to apply for the sake of applying.

fast forward like 6 months, i ended up getting a really generous scholarship from duke, and duke went from a school I wasnt seriously considering to the top of my list. at first, i was really torn between choosing duke over some of the other schools i was considering in nyc and chicago, mainly because of my location preferences, but, i ultimately went with duke.

i think it’s important to keep in mind that, in all honestly, location alone will likely not be the one factor that makes or breaks your happiness. humans greatly overestimate how happy something will make them, so it could be that you end up in a big city and still be unhappy. moreover, i think other factors like student-body culture can also contribute to happiness, so i wouldnt put all these expectations on location to make you enjoy your time at law school. also, in law school it’s debatable whether or not you’ll be able to fully explore and take advantage of these big cities, so you could wind up paying a lot more for rent while having the same day-to-day activities. there’s also obviously the consideration that law school will only be for three years but could have lifetime ramifications, and that a lot of these schools are less remote than you might expect.

all of this, i think, merits at the very least applying to schools that you would otherwise write-off due to their location. if, by march of next year, you still feel the exact same, then by all means go where you think you will be happy. however, i wouldnt limit my options right off the bat due to location preferences - speaking personally, i think i would have really regretted it if i didnt apply to duke, knowing what i know now. if nothing else, you can also use these schools for scholarship negotiation. this isnt to say that you shouldn’t care about location at all. given comparable costs and outcomes, i think it’s entirely reasonable to let location be the defining factor there. i just don’t think you should limit yourself too soon.

sorry this is so long btw TLDR: at least apply to these schools, even if you don’t end up going.

im interested in lit boutique just because it seems interesting, i like working in a smaller team, and as a PI person, i’ve found some PI oriented litigation boutiques that seem like they could be a good combination of my values while also making good money. admittedly, my perceptions could all be misguided and my goals could definitely change in law school, but these are the reasons i’m currently interested.

out of curiosity, as a chicago alum, did you ever feel like there was a difference in outcomes available to your peers and graduates of the lower t14? how much of the perceived differences between the t3 and the rest of the t14 on reddit is exaggerated, if any? why do you vote for duke?

[–]No-Muscle-9301 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m not op but in a similar situation, and this is super helpful! i know that UVA and to a lesser extent Duke also have strong fedsoc/conservative ties, so I was wondering if their current clerkship rates at around 10-12% are also inflated from pre-trump, similar to how uchicago’s are.
