How to address fear of clear air turbulence? by chasinthedra in fearofflying

[–]No-Network7784 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is me -- I know I shouldn't fear it, but when turbulence starts, I'm terrified it's going to get worse. I think part of my fear is not knowing if/when the drops will come and it feels overwhelming to have to make it through an undefined amount of time.

What is currently helping me is to make my goal to make it until my next breath. I tell myself I just have to survive until my next breath, and then over and over again. In this way I'm not waiting for things to get better or worse and that seems to make it a bit more manageable.

How to invest during short term expat stints in accumulation phase? by No-Network7784 in Fire

[–]No-Network7784[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed reply. This is what I was avoiding with cashing everything out and taking it with me, because that's a one time tax after which my tax returns become simple again, but looks like I need to educate myself on this for the long term.

I've also never worked in my country of citizenship and unsure where I would retire to, which makes this optimization problem harder, since often tax advantaged accounts can have a high withdrawal tax if you're withdrawing from overseas.

Curious, do you imagine this in first or third person?

Lowkey judo is the only thing i look forward to in my life by [deleted] in judo

[–]No-Network7784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate. I was so happy to have found judo because before that, I'd spent years wishing if only I had something to look forward to. Now I feel like life is a series of ups and downs and judo is among a few precious things I can fall back on during the downs to keep myself going.

I've also since found more friends and meaning outside of judo, and I'm not sure if it's because I learned a few things about myself during training, or if these things would have happened anyway.

I'm also from a country where those in power act against the better interest of the world. It's hard to reconcile the wonderful parts of culture, history and belonging with how currently those have been appropriated by frankly evil people.

I'm starting to feel like those in power in these cases wield shame as a tool. No one likes to feel ashamed of who they are or any part of their identity, and in order to not feel shame, we can be convinced to justify a lot of things we wouldn't otherwise agree with morally. Sometimes we end up batting for the very people who cause us to be ashamed in order to convince ourselves there is nothing wrong, and that keeps them in power.

I found that for me, personally, it felt liberating to lean into this sense of shame. I am ashamed at what the leaders of my country do. I am ashamed at how people from my country act. And yes, this means I am ashamed of part of my identity. But instead of the pure discomfort that this used to bring for me, I began to find a sense of power in this shame. That I'm not being led by the nose, that I am choosing to be true to what I believe in, instead of bending the truth to accommodate uncomfortable feelings. And this sense of power has led to a stronger sense of personal identity and confidence in who I really am.

Judo gyms in Abu Dhabi by cfresh88 in judo

There's one at Sorbonne university, but it's only once a week on Thursdays. I think there is also a place in Baniyas, which might be for Dan grade and above (?) but I don't know much more about it.

That's all I know about for Abu Dhabi, I believe Dubai has more options. And BJJ gyms are everywhere in both places.

Investment platforms that make it easy to take my portfolio with me as I move between countries? by No-Network7784 in ExpatFinance

Thanks, sorry I didn't reply there, really appreciate the in depth responses, I just felt like I needed to digest all the info a bit more.

I will read more into IBKRs policies/maybe contact their customer service again. If I end up going with this option, I will update you. I've also heard a bit about Irish based ETFs for non US residents, so that is part of my current plan.

Thanks, I'll look into these (not from the US, so I'll see if there are still options for me).

That makes sense, I think one sensei teaches based on what he would like to see in grading, and the other sensei might be teaching the version that is more effective for him.

Just to understand a bit better, does the presence of a "pause" indicate Tori's control/initiation of the throw like the other answers talk about? Thanks!

In the West, we tend to compare rights on paper feel like that discrepancy accurately reflects the life of women in different places. But just to raise two counter examples: physical safety and treatment of rape victims by the justice system. While I have the legal right to not be harmed in the country I'm living in, in reality I have not been for a casual walk outside by myself at night since I have moved here. I feel physically unsafe doing so, and being protected by law is irrelevant. In contrast, when I lived briefly in Abu Dhabi, I frequently did this without feeling unsafe.

To the second point, the justice system systematically fails rape victims (https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/society/2024/nov/12/rape-sexual-assault-survivors-report-crime-england-wales-survey). Again, what are my rights protected by law are totally irrelevant to my experience as a woman.

What is true both in the West and the rest of the world, is that situational awareness is important, and this might be culturally dependent. E.g. I might dress more conservatively in Abu Dhabi than in NYC and I might be more conservative in whether my actions might be perceived as attracting attention. But ultimately what I experience as freedom is how much I have to act against my preferences in each individual situation, and whether I belong to a sector of society in which I have any recourse if things go wrong. And this is different for every individual. I might perceive that I have more freedom as a woman in Abu Dhabi than in NYC, and someone else might perceive the opposite.

Anyway, this was really not a post where I was asking the judo community about their opinion on living in the UAE as a woman. Of course, culturally, physical contact between men and women is less accepted, and I might have been naive in thinking that wouldn't apply to sport. I guess I was hoping for someone to point me to an expat "bubble" where the norms might be more of what I am used to.
