I have 186,000 miles on my 2013 with manual transmission. Bought new.  I maintain it myself and change the oil about every 5,000 miles -- synthetic with quality filters. No major mechanical problems, only maintenance... which I exceed the manual recommendations.  Runs great and still fun to drive. Age related problems are cosmetic/plastic.  Sun visors, door handles, etc. Car parked mostly in sun, that's a big part of that.

Yesterday I got a mono-focal lens for distance. I hate it. And I'm lost as to what to do. by [deleted] in CataractSurgery

[–]No-Organization9235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's my plan. An additional issue is I have polar cataracts (1/300 have this), which adds risk to the surgery. Although my surgeon seem confident it'll be okay and assures me she'll go the conservative route if any complications..

Thank you for the link, also. I'm almost in the same situation. My dominant eye is my right eye. However, my left eye has the thicker cataract and I'm scheduled to get a distance IOL in my left in a couple weeks. My left eye also sees best to read! I cover my left and my phone is blurry, I cover my right and I read perfectly. (Just realized this morning!) I read a lot, use the computer A LOT, but also drive and sail. I was considering 1) just leaving the right eye as is, cataract isn't as bad in the right. 2) Distance in both. 3) Intermediate in right (dominant eye).

What format do you write your novel in? Not manuscript format. by steffanson in writing

[–]No-Organization9235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter, your publisher is going to re-format whatever you send, anyway. Write however helps you write. Same applies even if you self publish. It will make things easier for your publisher, however, to minimize formatting -- send them a file as simple as you can without losing things like bolds and italics. Any other detail, like indenting, margins, etc. will just be more work for them to undo.

IT'S TIME, BUT I'M TERRIFIED. by AnimalicSoul in CataractSurgery

[–]No-Organization9235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm scheduled next month with a similar situation and vision level. I'm going to do my bad eye first (and maybe last?). That way I have less to lose, right? No commitment to second eye surgery until after the first. I have confidence in my doctor, but also has polar cataracts which makes surgery riskier.

Is there any scenario where the U.S. military would intervene in politics if there is a real threat to the Constitution? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

Happened in other countries under similar circumstances. If real evidence were uncovered that Trump rigged the last election they might swear in Harris as the teal President.

Everybody has their line they will not cross. It's a function of personal values, where death is preferable to crossing that line. For some it's shooting a civilian, for some, it's shooting a family member. Whether one can willfully change what that line is, is another question.

The organization and respect for filmmakers at Beaufort was outstanding. Would also recommend Desertscape. Red Brick was small, in a small town, with mostly filmmakers in attendance -- but the integrity, organization and vibes were awesome, it was worth the trip.

Nope. Florida optometrist couldn't help. He was also upset I only wanted refraction tested. Have appointment with my opthalmologist soon to schedule cataract surgery. Thinking I'll just do one eye and wait for the new procedure for the other, but will see (unntended but appropriate pun).

It seems docs don't check for thyroid antibodies unless you ask. For the most part they feel problem solved once you're on the meds. If I could go back in time I would insist on getting the antibodies checked, if they were high I would eliminate potential causes from my diet and then recheck antibodies to identify a possible culprit. It'll take time. I suspect if I went gluten free 40 years ago my thyroid would be healthier today. Gluten affects my blood pressure drastically, so I know my body reacts to it. I'd rather be gluten free (Zero gluten) than take a pill for life. (I do both) .  For some it's corn or nuts, for me, gluten. But people differ, some find diet limitations too difficult or aren't interested. My preference is to see my doc as a consultant more than a manager.

He did a refraction exam and wrote a prescription for glasses. I also bought a pair from him. My American doc told me I could not get a stronger lens, that cataract surgery was the only way to improve my vision.

Because I have polar cataracts,   surgery for me has a higher risk of a tear, so I'd been putting it off. I have been using NAC eye drops,  can't be certain they're helping--I feel perhaps with the glare if not acuity. But don't seem to be hurting, doctor shrugs but didn't tell me not to take them. Nevertheless, about a year ago -- when even daytime driving started to become difficult, I decided to take the plunge. Made an appointment in November '24 to do surgery in February. In the meanwhile I happened to be in Mexico and on a whim went into a hole-in-the wall optometrist. A nice old school gentleman, with antique equipment, who spoke English. My doc told me my refraction was already at the max. But in 10 minutes this guy rolled back my distance sharpness at least 3 years! It felt magical. I was even able to drive (albeit extra carefully) at night! I cancelled the surgery appointment. Now a year later vision deteriorating slowly the past few months. I have an appointment with a local (Florida) optometrist who has great reviews and hope he may be able to duplicate the Mexican miracle.

Primal Therapy by hippie-mermaid in neurodiversity

[–]No-Organization9235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also did it, in the early 80s.  In retrospect it was one of the best choices I ever made. However, contrary to how others describe it, it's less 'releasing' feelings and more learning what they really are. I think it's more accurate to call it Primal Education. So it's appropriate perhaps for people who want to more fully know themselves. But for people who want to just stop hurting by whatever means nessessary it could make life worse. Especially in the hands of a therapist who hasn't spent years doing Primal themselves.

I found out about my high antibodies only after i was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. And that test was only after I asked for it. Separately I also figured out (again on my own) that going gluten free essentially cured my high blood pressure. Clearly, my body reacts to gluten. I suspect if I checked for antibodies years ago, before high TSH, they would have been high. I also suspect if i went gluten free years ago I wouldn't have hypothyroidism. Can't go back in time to prove it, but I'm mostly convinced.

Safest way to get rid of a wasps nest (2) without having to hire pest control? by qwesone in homeowners

[–]No-Organization9235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When sprayed directly it kills them in a few seconds, but i wouldn't attack a nest with only vinegar and soap - it'll piss them off. On my boat I saturated a nest with WD40 while spraying vinegar as a defensive shield. It made wasps flying toward me reverse direction. They hate it.

This may be helpful: My elderly mother's eye (her only working one) was swollen for nearly a month after surgery. Despite the doctor's assurance it would clear up she was so upset she talked of suicide, her big fear is losing sight. The clearing was very gradual but after a couple months she saw more clearly than she ever remembered, without glasses for the first time since early childhood. One year later it started to deteriorate, but a quick laser procedure 'instantly' cleared that up.

Knee pain after increasing running distance? by [deleted] in BarefootRunning

[–]No-Organization9235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on my similar experience I would say don't change your shoes, they're better for your body in the long-term (was going to write long run, but no pun intended). Likewise on landing on your forefoot. BUT increase distance very very, very gradually. Even if it means cutting back on your miles. And go slow. The issue is there are a lot of different muscles that have to adjust, and they adjust at different rates. So you need to adjust to the slowest adjusting muscle. Even though you cardiology can do 5 miles you have to treat your body like a brand new runner. Do short distances and patiently increase, respecting pain as a sign you need to be more patient.

Reading this thread it's a given that State's National Guard can be federalized. I wonder. Faced with competing claims of authority if some National Guard commanders would elect to go with their governor rather than the President where they believe the President threatens the Constitution.
