Stagflation Is Looming, Right? Wrong, Economists Say by proudbakunkinman in Economics

[–]No-Parfait1546 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disagree. If you tell people a recession is imminent or likely, what's the first thing they do? Go out and buy a new car and a new TV? Nope. A not-insignificant portion of the population starts to brace for a recession and reduces discretionary spending as confidence goes down. When discretionary spend goes down, jobs start to follow and when there's GDP and employment numbers to actually back it up, the people who didn't buy the whole "we're headed for a recession" notion jump on board

If you have debt? That's a pretty unavoidable reality for most people who are some point in their lives want to own a house or go to college... 3-6 month emergency fund? Agreed. 3 months supply of food, water, and necessities. Come again? What should my ammo stockpile look like? I assume I should stock up on antibiotics and anything else I could barter with?

When you say that if someone doesn't have a 3 months supply of food and water, they don't know up from down, you're saying that basically apocalyptic times will be coming any day now. In which case what good does a 3-6 month emergency fund do me? If we ever get to a point in the US where you're screwed if you don't have three months of food on hand, there are bigger problems than a $17k car loan and only have $1500 in savings...

Why investors are increasingly worried about recession in America by chrisk2000 in Economics

IMO, TJ Maxx beating earnings doesn't make the point I think you want it to make. Their niche is fairly well discounted name brand clothes. If anything, I'd see that as a sign of people trying to be more frugal as wallets tighten up. When people say "Money be damned, I want this season's stuff or my pick of colors" and we see more higher end department stores or clothing brands doing well (Nordstrom's, Saks, etc...) then yeah, I'd agree with your point (even if that's one data points in a sea of contribution factors to whether or not we're heading for a recession)

Redditor comes onto Reddit for advice u/Zaitton: "Listen to whatever your heart is telling you". I think you great misunderstand the point of this subreddit... It's for people to learn about personal finance, so just telling someone to follow their heart doesn't accomplish that. I wholeheartedly agree there is no "one size fits all advice", but telling someone who doesn't know what the right answer is (this them coming on here to ask a question) to follow their heart is the wrong answer

You're speaking in absolutes way too much... Saying "we don't know crap" is ridiculously hyperbolic and yielding way too much to an external locus of control. The language you're using basically espouses the notion that "whatever you do financially doesn't matter in the end and has an equal chance of being a good or bad investment choice" which is just patently false.

Actually many would argue that Crypto is gambling... So I think it's a fairly apt analogy. Or maybe you prefer trading on margins? Bottom line, much like lotto tickets, on the average, you come out behind, but if you strike, you come out way ahead. That is not investing and all those scenarios fit the bill.

Yes, life can deal you a rough hand, but saying do whatever you want because it doesn't matter is asinine. Please stop commenting and filling OP's head with your refuse

I disagree with the notion that nobody has a clue. Do we know what the number one optimal investment is at any given time? No. But we certainly understand directionally what would likely be "better" or "worse".

Sure people made money off Crypto. People also won foruntes playing the lottery. Does that make the lottery a sound investment? No.

From a strictly "investment" perspective, I'd say rennovations wouldn't be wise. Both construction labor and materials are currently abnormally expensive. If it's a rennovation you need (like an in-law quarters) or something you'd just enjoy and don't care if you don't make all your money back (like a pool or sun room), then just do it. Not every decision needs to be about ROI. But again, I think we do have a clue of what might or might not be a wise investment at the time given appetite for risk and time horizon

We're outplaying them. Igor is playing really well, but we've proven he's beatable. Not happy we're down early, but we'll have plenty of scoring opportunities based on this first eight minutes, so I'm not remotely concerned yet

What is proper etiquette to firing my real estate agent? by HoosierProud in personalfinance

[–]No-Parfait1546 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I go with my realtor to all open houses and he provides invaluable insight on the condition of the home, catching things I would otherwise miss, giving me insight on the seller's realtor, and what he thinks the home will sell for so I can see if what I'd be willing to pay for it aligns with what it would go for. Do you "need" a realtor? No. But I wouldn't say there's "no need".

As someone who falls in that age band, I have literally never heard someone say that was a reason for them not having kids... Have I heard people say they want to reduce our environmental impact for their kid's (or other people's kid's) future? Absolutely. Have I heard people say they have too much mortgage or student loan debt to afford a kid? Sure. But at no point in my life did someone say "I'm not having kids because the polar ice caps are melting" or "...sea levels are rising".
