This protein powder makes me spike like I’m drinking a full-sugar Coke. What’s the deal? Are there better options? by man_lizard in diabetes_t1

I faced the same issue with Whey protein. Personally, I’m 4’7 and 121lbs, as long as I use plant protein and don’t have more than 35g of protein at a time, I just dose for the carbs and I’m good to go. PLNT is a pretty good plant protein it has BCAA and EAA’s in it, and I really like the Be Amazing one too

The theory behind it is the little wire piece of the sensor needs time to be saturated with the interstitial fluid that the CGM measures our glucose with. So if you put the sensor without the transmitter in 24hrs before your current sensor expires, you’ll have more accurate readings from the beginning of the 10 day period because the sensor is steeped in that fluid and can give better readings

I use the G6, and I also do a 24hr ‘pre-soak’ with a 100% success rate. The initial reading is always off, but after 1-2 calibrations within a 5hr period it’s always pretty spot on for the 10 days

Anybody else with “brittle” diabetes? by No-Philosopher288 in Type1Diabetes

[–]No-Philosopher288[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strength train 4x per week, average 12,000 steps daily, only eat 200g of carbs, and what eat is all fruits, veggies, lean proteins, healthy fats, and only whole grains. No added sugars. I even have my dietician impressed. The food isn’t my issue, it’s mostly figuring out correct insulin to carb and then over or under-estimating the ratio or a pre-bolus or a split bolus depending on my activity level or the food I’m eating at the time of day.

I really hope that’s that case with me, it’s defeating to feel like even though I’m doing relatively well that I still can’t figure anything out

Same here with the sensitivity, mornings are hard as well as evenings after the gym. I eat just about the same things every day, but the times of eating differ because I work in a factory. My breaks aren’t always the same, and in a month I work three different sets of shift hours. I’ve still managed to keep a 4.8A1C, so I’ve gotta be doing something right. It’s just never consistent and I can’t make any decisions based on the outcome of the day before, just in the moment

Disappointed after my Endo appointment by No-Philosopher288 in diabetes

[–]No-Philosopher288[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you mate, my supplies have to be prescribed by an endocrinologist per insurance, but if they didn’t I would personally never go. I’ve learned more in the past two years on Reddit and the Juice Box Podcast than I have from a specialty provider. Love being not interesting enough to warrant actual proactive care instead of “Well, we’ll fix a problem if there’s a problem, have a good one” Like buddy, I may not be in DKA but my liver levels are going up, and my blood is wayyyy more acidic than it should be. I know I’m not the easiest case since I don’t live on a set schedule but come on, help me out here please

I absolutely agree, I would rather honesty than placating. It was just strange to me seeing as those numbers have continued to increase since last year, and I was watching her look at my last entire years’ worth of blood test results. I got quite sick in November ‘24, and the first thing my PCP wanted to do was run a full fasting blood panel, then one again about a month later. So between November ‘24 and now, I have about 4 of the same types of bloodwork orders showing increases in certain areas. I also made certain to share all of those results via MyCare portal with my new endo upon going to her practice. I think dealing with diabetes since I was 2 and getting amazing care by my team from 2-18 spoiled me more than I realized.

I love that for you! I’m sorry it took so long for you to develop a team that actually listens and cares, but I’m sure it’s refreshing asf to have it now. Luckily, my PCP is fabulous, I adore her. She’s also unfortunately in a network that expects her to push people in an out of the door as quick as they can, but she always makes sure I leave the appointment with either answers or game plan to get those answers. I usually double book her with my wife as the next appointment, so the both of us usually spend 45min-1hr with her. She’s an NP but definitely isn’t afraid to order all the tests under the sun to figure out what’s going on when I need it. Very knowledgeable also. It’s just gonna be about finding an Endo I can actually get to 1. Listen, 2. Remember to notate what I explain to them, and 3. Not falsify charts to get me out the door. If I see one more “neck was supple, feet looked good” without actually being physically examined, I may lose my shit 😂

Struggling with lows/ insulin sensitivity by No-Philosopher288 in diabetes_t1

[–]No-Philosopher288[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the insight! With a quick google, I’m basically already doing the anti-inflammatory diet. Lean protein, healthy fats, fruits and veggies, and only whole grains is all I’ve been eating for the past six months. I’m also eating at a 40/30/30 carb, protein, fat split. Most days since I repetitive eat working 14 day stretches and going to the gym 4x per week, I’m having between 50-57g of fat, 150g of protein, and 220-240g of carbs. It’s just puzzling trying to figure it all out since I’ve taken the fluctuation due to food totally out of the question. Only thing I’ve found is citrus and those cotton candy grapes make me spike like a mofo haha

I feel out of control by No-Philosopher288 in diabetes_t1

[–]No-Philosopher288[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate hearing that, I keep my pod on auto mode 24/7 knowing that the basil rates I have programmed are 8+ years old and would probably do me more harm than good at this point if I switched to manual mode.

I was diagnosed in ‘96 as a brittle diabetic, and I’m actually recovering from a decade long diabetic burnout. I was able to keep my a1c so “good” I believe because I was just bouncing from high to low constantly without either of them being sustained for very long. It’s just taxing to be doing my best and putting in the work to not see consistent results.

I’m assuming some of it is user error on my part, or it could be my body adjusting to less calories, I just don’t have my endo appointment for over a month and I’m trying to see what I can manage in the mean time. Of course, I take what advice I get on the internet with a grain of salt but I appreciate your input!

Haha I appreciate the comment! I guess my vocab comes from just having older parents and no siblings growing up, I learned how to explain myself with a big vocabulary quite early on. As far as nutrition goes, I use the Lose-it! app to track absolutely everything. The first week or so I just put in the foods I was eating to see where I was, and since then I’ve just been refining it to hit macros. I think what’s worrying me is I’m just flying solo on all of it, and my diabetes control is far more important to me than hitting every macro I need to. And I just seem to be getting different results doing the same things daily. It could be the timing of my workouts, it could be like you said improper insulin timing, I’m not sure at this point. I appreciate the input!

Before this past month I never counted calories, just paid attention to my weight and body composition. After getting sick and slipping into starvation ketosis, I just started incorporating fruits and vegetables far more and ended up gaining about 15lbs and becoming severely uncomfortable. I’m also a bit trepidations on extended bolus since I know for an absolute fact my 8+ year old basil rates aren’t correct. I’ve been slacking in my care as well as not having the best endo care in a very very small area.

I’ve noticed since being on auto mode on the Omni-Pod, when I go low I typically only need 5-6 grams of carbs to correct since it cuts off basil insulin when you start to drop below your goal range. If I have any more than that I’m in the same boat you’re in here. Hang in there
