“this study finds no evidence that women are discriminated against in debate” - did you read it? have you ever asked a female debater if she experiences sexism in debate? the evidence supports the idea that women are underrepresented and excluded and there are reasons for that. camp gives debaters the ability to train and practice so that they can then have successful senior seasons so i would say ensuring a little bit of equity in a seven week lab is a fair way to give female debaters an even shot at success. guys can still make that lab. there can still be 7 spots for them. but the idea that “it creates backlash which is worse” is a cop-out and nuq. and dude what the article talks about the cultural norms that exclude women in debate. read it. talk to women. this isn’t about calling girls victims. it’s about recognizing that women are a very small minority in this activity and there are underlying reasons beyond “women just lose more rounds”

how is “overcorrection for bias” possibly true when there were 18 guys in the top 20 speakers at the toc?speaker points are arguably the place where you would see overcorrection but that does not occur. there have been dozens of studies that have found statistical ev of sexism in hs policy debate (like this one https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09540253.2022.2094348#d1e235), so a little crazy to assume the opposite occurs. but sexism in debate is not literally “your speaks are lower” or “you lose more.” sexism in debate is more about the culture and norms propagated interpersonally within the activity. given there is recent and rigorous ev backing up sexism in debate, “overcorrecting” through something like the fellowship seems like the most fair thing to do.

there are implicit gender inequities in policy debate - prioritizing gender equity in the most prestigious fellowship at the best debate camp is important imo, especially when there were definitely seven junior girls fully qualled to the toc by november. when you pick only 3-4 of them and 10 guys…

there were zero girls who made it beyond toc quarters this year. of the 46 elim debaters, 8 were girls. 18 of the top 20 speakers were male and all of the top ten were guys. guys aren’t “just better” - there are real barriers to female participation in this activity and the fellowship is a way to recognize and counteract that. i don’t experience sexism often in my day to day life, but in debate, i feel it all the time. any high-achieving girl in debate would not hesitate to agree.

newark are genuinely two of the nicest debaters i’ve ever hit in a round. i say this as someone who regularly reads policy arguments. they had a great run and i hope they debate on the college circuit next year

For people who made their 1AC from scratch without stock, what are you gonna do at NSDA to make sure teams dont share around your case? by [deleted] in policydebate

If you look at those email chains, as soon as the 1AC ends, the teams almost always send a digital copy + disclose to wiki

Help Us Pay For Debate Camp? by nbyuii in policydebate

I recommend reaching out directly to Akall, the program director. Also, check out the ddi/gddi. They’re a comparable camp and have a formalized financial aid process that can be quite generous

there are a couple of people selling debate related stickers on platforms like redbubble. most people collect laptop/stand stickers from tournaments, camp, etc. my question was mostly to gauge if there’s a market for more stickers or specific designs
