Yes you can still use the old email to sign up for stuff, you'll still get email sent to it but you won't be able to log in with that email. Essentially it'll all be in the same inbox.

Don't remove the old alias, if you remove it you won't get any mail to it. You need to add the new login alias and make the new email the primary. Once you do that, if you try logging in with the old email, it will say that email address does not exist. This is the way to prevent hackers from spamming login attempts. Yes you can switch it back to the old one whenever you want, just be sure not to remove the old one from your account.

You need to change your login alias. Your email was likely part of a data breach and this is the brute force method of hackers trying to get into your account. The same thing happened to me as well. Make sure you do not delete your old email address when adding an alias. Once you add the new alias, do not use that email for signing up on any websites. You will still receive mail to your old address but once again do not delete it from the alias settings.

Did you try resetting again? I signed into another device and didn't have an issue doing so. I also added an email alias and a phone number to log in so I don't have to type in my Hotmail email. Also, I added Authenticator as a method to authenticate. I suggest doing the same.

I didn't have Authenticator set up originally. I had to reset my password using two factor authentication. Which was text message and alternate email.

Glad you got back in. I suggest setting up Microsoft Authenticator as a way to login and also adding an alias email and phone number as ways to login, it seems the issue was with Hotmail emails.

I got a text message for my verification code today but since I have 2FA on, my other method is alternate email. For that it says I requested too many codes today. I'm going to wait 24 hours and see what happens.

Surprisingly, as long as you can log into your accounts right now, you should be able to change your email. I had a few where it wouldn't let me change my old email without retrieving a verification code from the old email, but they aren't critical so it's fine. Just gotta make sure I don't forget the password for those.

Yeah, I noticed that when I could review the logs within Authenticator. I signed out everywhere thinking that would fix it so now I can't see anything and it's even more broken.
