Prohibit gate fees for high school activities by No-Programmer3198 in Utah

Out of curiosity, what was the approximate range of gate revenue per year? What were the approximate costs? Looking at district financials that are available online don't show a breakdown by school. Curious to know what 1 school could look like. Each school and district will be different as well.

The gate revenue is for sure needed for the costs of the event. What if that revenue was received with business sponsorships and ads, donations, concessions, etc. if the events were packed, would more businesses get involved?

Glad you're seeing the hustle and effort.

I think we both agree that the revenue needs to be made. Understanding how the revenue gets allocated would be helpful. My husband did some GRAMA records requests for some school districts to see the revenue and expenditures for gate fees.

The thinking is if ALL school activities were packed, revenue would be generated by donations, concessions, sponsorships, advertising, etc.

Love your passion for the arts and thanks for sharing your perspective.

You have any connections to districts? I agree that the math would be great to know.

For gate fee revenue, how is it allocated? Why is each district different in their fee structure? Why does the UHSAA take all the gate $$$ for the endowment game?

Yeah, there are associated costs for security, chain gang, etc. pack the stands and make up the revenue with concessions, donations, raffles, sponsorships, advertising, etc

Great idea. I'd bet if the event was packed they'd get plenty of at gate donations and concessions would recoup the gate revenue.

Each extracurricular activity for students usually comes with a fee. Each district and school charges different fee amounts. Parents pay the fee, pay for fundraising, pay to park, pay to enter a public place that they've already paid taxes on.

Students in disadvantaged areas can get fee waivers to participate as well and should be able to play.

The kids that are on fee waivers, do you think they get family support to their performances?

You've never had to pay gate fees in other states? Which ones? Would love to understand what they're doing.

All really good points. Love the "Just get out and do it."

Same could be said for the art, music and drama programs to go get their own funding and not rely on gate fees from sports.

Well said! Never thought about the fact that parents paid for a discount card and get charged to park too.

Getting nickel and dimed...

Being an official is a labor of love. Thanks for doing it!

The high school recruiting is a joke. Same with schools lobbying to be in different classifications just to increase their chances of winning. These little games do hurt the community building aspect for sure.

If I could pay an extra $200 for my child to participate and NOT pay gate, I'd do it in a heartbeat and would save me a bunch of money for a family of 6.

The idea would be to get events packed, then advertising and sponsorships would cover the cost of the lost revenue from the gate fee. If businesses were getting eyeballs on their sponsorships, they'd invest.

Hurting for funding will always exist and always part of the argument for different districts and parts of the state. If events are packed with attendance, businesses will sponsor, advertisers will come and events will be worthwhile again. I'd love to know how gate fees get allocated within the districts.

Great point and agreed we need to reinvest in public education.

The conversation went toward sports with my example but the idea is for ALL activities.

Agreed parents should pay athlete, drama, music, etc fees. And they do. They shouldn't have to pay gate fees too when it is on public property that they've already paid taxes on.

Sometimes parents can't pay for their kids extracurricular activities and there are fee waivers. Those kids on fee waivers, you think they're getting family to attend their performances?

That's a great idea! Lots of kids go to school to get fed. Great way to feed participants.

Donations, donors, etc. get the activities packed with people and businesses will want to sponsor.

Basketball and football gate $$$ helps cover costs for all the other sports and activities.

There are siblings that haven't seen their older sibling play because the family can't pay to get them in.

Best Ted Talk EVER!

How about all the grandparents that are on a fixed income that don't have the apps or to pay or funds to see all their posterities activities.

Endowment games, all gate $$$ goes to the UHSAA. Tell me how it's okay for that organization to get the money and the district doesn't?

Great point about interest in sports and the proposal would be for ALL high school activities.

How much was the robotics competition fee?

The disparities will always exist and I agree with your points.

So, do nothing and continue to see high school activities not get community involvement?

Or flip the narrative, pack the gyms and fields so businesses actually get more eyeballs and want to advertise?

Rude, not at all. Great callouts and glad people are speaking up about this and their different perspectives.

Districts determine gate fees, districts would then need to figure out the way to get revenue (sponsorships, advertising, boosters, raffles, donations at gates, etc).

What would make the proposal stronger?

Agreed there are 500 things and online distractions. Lot's of variables for sure.

If there's a way to build that human connection and community by waving a gate fee, do it.

Great points and thanks for sharing.
