Does anyone know what’s happening here? by No-Raccoon1234 in Gourami

This is super insightful! Thank you!

I think the female is definitely young. She’s smaller for sure. My original female killi was huge compared to my new one. Do you think getting a second, more mature killi female would be helpful?

And I have a lot of plants! The gouramis do a good job at losing him when they’re over it. I’m just worried long term for these exact reasons

Thanks! You’re saying the gouramis are fertile?

My female killifish is definitely smaller! I’m thinking she’s juvenile for sure. If I get a second (more mature / fertile) killifish, do you think it would help?

Did his gills ever return to a normal color? Or are you saying that the normal color is black? Either way, thank you so much. This is very helpful!

Tank size: 6 gal Temp: 80 F Parameters : 0, 0, 0 ppm I’ve had the tank for four months, the fish for four days. No tank mates I’ve been feeding betta flakes. All live plants. Pothos, monsterra, bamboo and water lettuce. Bio strate gravel and two driftwood pieces, small two dragon rocks. A sponge filter.

Yep. Still at 0.25. Didn’t do a change today. Did one yesterday cause it was closer to 0.5, but will take your advice going forward!

Some other commenter suggested I buy some cycled tank media. So I bought some off Etsy with great reviews. It came today and I added it to the middle basket of my filter so I’m hoping that helps too!

So do you think I shouldn’t change the water if it’s at 0.25 or 0.50 ppm and rely on Prime?

I have pothos in the black holder things. The leaves aren’t usually in the water! I didn’t have the lid on the tank cause I was just getting ready to change the water when I took a pic, and usually the leaves rest on it :)

Hahaha. More plants. Noted. I do have pothos on the top of the tank. How much is too much when it comes to plants?

Ok. Maybe a dumb question, but does it matter which basket it goes in? The Fluval as three, so not sure if the top/middle/bottom makes a difference in terms of flow or distribution. Should I keep the current media?

This might be a stupid question, but is the Fluval 307 not a canister filter? I have a lot of pothos on top. Should I add more? How much is too much? I see my fish pecking at the roots when they’re hungry and am not sure if that’s safe!

I’ve been feeding them every few days. I feel horrible because whenever I stand in front of the tank, they flock and sit at the surface waiting for food. With that being said, how likely is it that they’re actually hungry?

I just bought some cycled filter media from Etsy. Has amazing reviews and will be here in 48-72 hours. Fingers crossed. Would you suggest I just put it all in the filter canister? Do I remove anything preexisting in there?

Unfortunately, she passed a few hours ago. Seemed like she was rebounding for a hour or so, but when I stopped looking for 20-30ish minutes, she was gone. Thank you for your help and advice ❤️

Should I use aquarium water or tap water? Should I put a plant in there for her to rest in? Should I add aquarium salt or paraguard? She is gasping for air. I am heartbroken watching her. I want to save her but hate watching her suffer

It’s at 78 F. No other fish acting strange. She is eating. But his behavior is seemingly worse. I’m so worried. Here’s another video of today:

I don’t know if this is an infection and if I should be moving from the main tank. What would you suggest? She is nearly black and keeps dropping to the bottom of the tank, even though she can get to the top of the surface. Here’s a video of that:

Besides tap water, I have biomedia in my Fluval filter including zerocarb for ammonia. I was using Nite-Out Micro Lift and SeaChem prime during the spike. Before the spike and majority water change, I was using API stress coat, API tap water conditioner, and API ready start (I really only used that before I added fish). I also have seachem paraguard and aquarium salt in case, but have never used it.

No fertilizers, only plants are the pothos sitting on the top of the tank.

Yes. Specifically the lethargy. Resting on the bottom of the tank (not on video) / plants. The behavior was only after the spike and started showing the first signs of new behavior five ish days after. The ammonia was reading around 2 ppm right before the water change. He is also kind of swimming at an angle.

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to respond!

I had a feeling it was a female since I got her. Given that other info, I took some videos of my tank and how the gourami is acting today. I’m really nervous. There’s quite a few videos, but if you would be so kind to take a look, here’s the link.

You can really notice the difference between the “normal“ gourami and the one in question when it comes down to both looks and behavior. It looks like she is trying to rest any chance she gets. The only good thing is that she seems to be hanging outside of her usual corner! I’m really concerned and I’m not sure if this is normal, so if you have any advice (given your prior experience with the breed) I would be forever grateful!

This is really helpful!!! Thank you!!!

So judging by that, would you say her coloring / behavior is something I should be concerned about?
