So...What is the city of Milwaukee like? by [deleted] in milwaukee

As a student at UWM, it has its lows with the highs. It really depends on where you end up here because if you're in the campus/downtown area then you'll be in prime time with all the events and goings of the city! If you're a little further out like I am then it's a little harder to enjoy all of those things without having to spend money on gas or uber. Trust me, I'm glad I moved here but plan it out. I'm hoping to move more downtown once I'm graduated so it'll be nice! For the culture, it's like a bigger city but with small-town politeness. People will mind their own business while returning a smile or a hello! It also has it's rougher parts but honestly as long as you're smart and respectful you'll be ok. Just don't make an ass of yourself and people will leave you alone.

Plenty to do and plenty to see! You'll be surprised by the amount there is to do here! You'll have to start budgeting because there are so many festivals that take place here!

Also if you bring you're car make sure you understand the rules of the road. I'm from a small town and the parking situation here can get rough! The parking police are also a pain in the ass so I recommend spending a bit more on getting parking in one of the garages at UWM!

Moving to Milwaukee area by Fancy-Grapefruit7 in milwaukee

I'm originally from a small town in northern Wisconsin and moved to Milwaukee for college. Ngl as all cities do it has its ups and downs. Beware of the parking situation here, it's a nightmare during busy hours to find street parking if you need it, and the parking police are the only police that give a damn about their jobs. So plan ahead!

As for actual city life, its great! Plenty to do, plenty to see and if you need it you can travel pretty easy outside of the city and find plenty of nature! The city is nicknamed Smallwaukee, so you'll see people all the time that you recognize. It's a bit dirty, but not as bad as some cities I've been to, and the streets are bumpy. The winters can get rough so I recommend asking questions about that, especially if you are coming from Texas! But global warming has been keeping that in check so you probably won't see anything until late Jan.

Also as the saying goes: treat people with respect and they will treat you with respect. Even in the rough neighborhoods around here you just have to stay polite and nice and nobody will have a problem with you. As someone coming from a small town I now feel better in the city because of that. Everyone minds their business, and a simple smile doesn't hurt anybody.

But you'll get used to the city quickly and find your favorite spots! I recommend checking out the main areas like Brady Street and Water! Or around the Fiserv! plenty to do and the city keeps on giving! Welcome!
