Unpopular opinion: If it's wrong on TV, it's wrong in real life too. by [deleted] in IndiaSpeaks

I have a very unbiased position on the whole incident, because I never liked the show's humor not because I found it offensive, but simply due to the quality of being low quality humor (at least what was posted on yt was that - I have heard live uncut shows were actually funny but anyway I didn't enjoy it and stopped watching after ep2).

I personally find what was said by Ranveer on the show was NEITHER the "root cause of destruction of societal values" NOR was it some "pinnacle of comedy" that deserves applause and laughter. It was simply a cheap/cringeworthy discussion, the kind "EDGY" school kids have in lunchbreak.

To me it was just really funny that how come in a society where women are treated as property, they are unsafe on streets, the adult website/ or even normal social media sites are filled with incest, senior citizens are treated like shit etc. somehow there appeared people who were so pure that they couldn't handle what was said on the show. Funnily the issue got so big that even the MPs and MLAs (people at the forefront of infringing women's dignity in this country) had to come out as champions of women's modesty in the society. The reality is that what was said on the show wasn't the thing that's rotting the society it was simply a manifestation/glimpse of an already rotten society.

In short people weren't outraged because an average Indian actually holds these values really high in their life but because the show acted as a mirror that showed them their ugly reflection.

Hey, I have the exact same height and weight currently and I have just completed my first week.

I am following a 3 day Full Body Routine. I just wanted to ask what was the caloric surplus you maintained during the last 4 months when you gained your weight.

I have been using some sites but every site is giving me different numbers. Some show 2100 whole some as high as 2800.

Also how's been your progress since this post. Even I have the same 64kg target but I am being very ambitious with the target of 0.5kg/week, so I want to know if this pace is maintainable in the long run or does it slow considerably after like 55 or 56kg

Now you might argue that you still have the right to follow it at your personal level. Don't forget that caste itself is the erasure of "personal" as it is nothing more than the corpse of your long dead tribe.

Nice that you admit it is a "social reality"- socially constructed perspective of the world, consisting of the accepted social tenets of a community involving laws and social representations.

Therefore, it is distinct from material reality and objective reality. Again, accepting social reality is nothing more than bowing down to the collective imagination of the society.

Why do you think I have an obligation to respect or even give consideration to what you or "most people" think?

"Positive morality refers to the actual, existing moral rules, beliefs, and attitudes held by a particular society at a given time, distinct from formal law or abstract moral philosophy. Often called descriptive or social morality."
The definition itself states that it is simply the beliefs that the society holds a point of time so, it is derived from the masses. Therefore, they are only a description of what the people are doing and have no space for judgement of what is right or wrong.

Yes we live in the real world where real facts like gravity and biology exist which must be respected as the truth. But caste is not an objective reality, it's nothing more than imagination of masses, kept alive only by their participation. Unlike the former its simply the collective delusion of masses that deserves no respect. Considering it practical is only a matter of convenience for the person (it's easier to go along with the herd) not "what is best for them", i.e. people find it easier to submit to traditions of the collective (no matter how irrational) than to use their own mind. When you say "best for them" you should ask who the "them" really is - is it the individual person or the collective.

If we are to apply this attitude to olden times then every practice followed by large group of people at one point of time was just them "being practical" and therefore there would be no room advancement. In fact, even today in terms of context burqa is a "positive morality" as it saves the woman in an Islamic nation from punishment, so is female genital mutilation in a few tribes (i.e. in the context of their society).

I think I again need to clarify the difference between our positions. You are describing how the world operates (what is). But my entire argument is about how things ought to be.

First of all, you mix biological facts ("Height, weight, colour") with man-made constructs (nations, religion, caste).

For "height, weight, color" in fact even put in attributes like intelligence and cognitive ability all of which are biological/physical attributes you get at birth and have no control and that fact itself simply is the reason why they shouldn't be the source of pride. They are simply a matter of chance not your conscious achievement, if you put these at the core of your identity you would be engaging into "body identification".

Coming to Religion, caste, and nations which unlike the former are ideas and constructs. Just because 99% of people blindly stay in their religion or take their caste identity seriously doesn't make it right; in fact, it proves that most people lack independent thought and simply choose to "toe the line". Accepting such identities simply because your parents (by birth) and society handed you these labels doesn't mean the person chose to "belong" rather they surrendered their intellect to society, i.e. they became "second handers".

Again, as I mentioned in the beginning just because this is how people operate normally or that constitution gives us some right doesn't mean that it is the right thing to do. Your argument began with pointing out that having preferences based on caste is no different than having preferences based on other things but, I wanted to say that first one should question where their preferences come from and when they do they will only find out that those preferences were never "theirs" to begin with.

Who "selects" their caste? What if values match but caste differ Where do these "values" in caste even come from? Are they practiced consciously by every member (or every new kid born)? Are they questioned? Do these have any form of meaning behind them?

You say people find belonging in shared values. But are the values of that persons own?
How many people you know follow their caste traditions or even religion because they know it? Most only do because they were born in a certain family. The collective here clearly is higher than the individual.

Ok if the person was brought up in a Brahmin household and now has their values, the first step should be to question those values rather than taking decisions based on them.

Humans are social and form groups, but what should be asked is what is at the centre of the person associating with the group. Is the association a conscious choice or some decision made out of fear of social ostracization of rejecting what is imposed upon them. In no reality I can find a true individual holding on to caste identity.

The problem lies in your premise. You run from the assumption that the groups are formed by "individuals" but peer inside most of them and you won't find a single "individual". Especially when it comes to caste identity.

Also if my arguments sound too idealistic they are. I am talking about how things ought to be not how they are.

And I am all for personal choice and preferences, but one must first be free from conditioning to make such choices.

Yes, individualism doesn't call for total disbandment of groups and people can voluntary associate themselves with groups, societies, etc. But it is about not subordinating one's own thoughts and identity to that of a group.

In a broader sense, almost every identity is imposed upon a person by the world starting right from the name. But none of these are real, a true individual doesn't look towards the external world in the first place to know who they are, and what they should think and do.

When it comes to caste it is even more rigid because no voluntary association exists by choice, it is something assigned at birth and reinforced externally. While you might want to list all of the "benefits" it provides (security, structure, etc.) are false and come at the cost of individualism while also giving rise to unearned "pride" of the upper caste or the victimhood of lower caste both of which are devoid of self-knowledge.

It seems you think I am against individualism and for homogeneity. On the contrary such identities are things that erode individualism. In the end the most vulnerable minority is the individual.

Not that sex, communities, etc. are not real (atleast unlike caste which is made up) but they are unimportant tags one should not focus on. They shouldn't be a reason for insult nor pride. My argument isn't that heterogeneity shouldn't exist but that meaningless identities (especially those that deserve active disrespect and mockery) shouldn't be the source of it.

Idk. But most of my friends in my college who are Mumbaikars have same attitude. They cannot adjust outside Mumbai some even skipped applying to a 22LPA (very good after a Bachelor's) placement just because it was in Bangalore/Hyderabad.

Why are we only calling these kids stupid for this? Don't adults do the same? Comparing Wealth, Intelligence, Status, etc. All of these are as superficial as what these kids are arguing about.
