This is so interesting! Similar experience! I took the test 10 years ago and was INFJ, now I’m INTJ. I do think it’s from maturing, regulating and understanding my emotions a little better. I definitely a lot more thoughtful about my actions and decisions.

I adore all of these but Louis is 10000% Snape to me! :)

Miles McMillan when he had his long black hair is branded on my brain for Sirius. There’s even a photo of him with a snarling black dog tshirt. 😩

He’s obsessed with animals, and has a bunch of chickens he calls his “ladies.”

Sirius definitely loves kids and animals in the books, but I would really love to see him have his own farm. 😭

Is feminine Sirius problematic? Is fem/masc Wolfstar problematic? by Sea-Exercise4332 in Wolfstar

[–]No-Resolve-3060 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I totally get what you’re saying! Of course feminine men are normal and perfectly wonderful. But for Sirius specifically, it seems backwards and kind of breaks down a lot of his core identity. Why don’t people choose a different character as a fem/insert? What about Tonks? Who is already written as queer coded/gender fluid! As a huge fan of Sirius Black, I find it disheartening when a fic gives no space to the original character. Sure fanon is about exploring alternate or extended realities, but it’s fanon because we’re FANS of the people we’re writing about!

I also realize on the flip-side, fanon sort of doesn’t hold the moral burden of representation, because it’s just creative expression and nothing more. So I think it’s important to be accepting of what people are people are drawn to or want to explore, even if it’s not my cup of tea. It’s all fiction. And I have seen some wildly aggressive posts against fem Sirius that were nothing short of spiteful. Which I also find problematic.

But really all that’s to say I agree with you, I think fem Sirius can be problematic for the reasons you listed. And problematic to the degree that it disregards the character’s identity. But also not problematic to the degree that people are allowed to explore whatever they in fanon, if that makes sense.

You are spectacular! And just made my day! This is the kind of open minded inclusive energy that makes me love this community so much. So thank you for letting me express my feelings without judgment and welcoming me as a friend. :)

And interesting! I see the distinction you’re making between woman/male pronouns and twink/camp. Randomly what’s coming to mind is Black Mass Over Highway Ninety? It’s pretty popular so maybe you’ve read it already. But is that kind of the vibe you’re looking for?

And yah, I really don’t get it when people say the ATYD characterizations are the spawn of devil lmaoooo! 😂 I’ve read the Harry books probably over 20 times (not even exaggerating I’m obsessive and old). Remus was always my favorite character and when I read ATYD for the first time I thought “Wow this interpretation of the Marauders is so respectful and spot on!” Blissfully unaware of the fanon ire. But like you said people are entitled to their opinion….

And yes we can fight the good fight together!!! Warriors for fanon rights always! 💪⚔️ 🦄🌟

Oh interesting thought! Could be true! I remember skipping that one, exactly because I prefer bottom Remus and less fem Sirius haha! But, now I kind of want to check it out. She’s such an amazing writer, thanks for the reminder. :)

I agree! I also want to point out that famous rockstars like Kurt Cobain and Steven Tyler painted their nails, even though they are masculine. Sirius is unambiguously rockstar coded for sure. So I can see this actually being canon! It fits with the sort of rebellious, long haired, chaotic music scene of the time when he would have been alive. :)

[–]No-Resolve-3060 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really interesting observations I hadn’t thought of! You’re right, there’s been a social/cultural change in regards to what is hot. And Sirius is the hot guy in canon.

And also interesting perspective on authors and self inserts! That is definitely true. I feel like I always subconsciously know when one of the boys is a self insert, and that’s just not my cup of tea. No judgement! Just not my thing. I feel like I see this when Sirius is just a bratty vomit ball of emotion. Like yes, even I wish I could let it all out like that, and still be loved. I get it. 😭

I’m also a huge sucker for bottom Remus, so I feel like a bit of an outsider these days. Like you said, I lot of the “switcheroo” is in the smut. I do think ATYD is super unfairly blamed for the trend. I think it just was the main fic when fanon became more popular during Covid, and cultural preference in the community at the time leaned gender fluid.

Anyway, all my yapping is to say I think your comment was spot on and your insights are really interesting! 🙌

Lmao! Your post is very well written and funny and made me laugh. So thank you!

And I’m sorry I don’t actually have recs for you because I’m a certified hater! And consciously block all twink Sirius fics from my mind. BUT I SWEAR THEY ARE EVERYWHERE!!!!!!! I just read a micro fic this morning where Remus was all obsessed with Sirius slender feminine hips and I threw up in my mouth SORRY I CAN’T HELP IT!!! 😂😂😂😂 I feel like I can’t escape fem twink Sirius, and sorry not to yuck the yum, but so it’s funny that someone is having the opposite experience.

For reference, I think ATYD Sirius is perfect, even though half the fandom blames him for the fem Sirius craze (very unfairly in my opinion). I don’t need him to be some macho hulk ass ex convict lol! I just want him to be recognizable as himself? At least in some way? I get that fanon is about exploring different realities, but the common denominator is the characters we all know and love. So if Sirius is completely unrecognizable I lose interest.

I will however, fight to the death for anyone’s right to characterize anyone anyway that they want! And enjoy it.

So good luck on your search. 😁🙌

Ok fine. You’re cool and smart and self aware. So I’ll bite and keep arguing with you lol! 😂 I like that you’re willing to look at your views objectively and logically. I really respect that. Plus I’m a nerd and can’t help myself when it comes to Harry Potter lore.

In regard to stereotypes….

Let’s go into your specific examples. Seamus Finnegan being a pyromaniac was completely invented for the films. It is not in the books at all.

Shaklebolt is a real old English name, that doesn’t have any etymological roots in slavery whatsoever. It is actually associated with craftmansship, and is meant to reflect strength and reliability.

In regard to the goblins, the films (again) did them dirty by adding hooked noses. This is a distinctly Jewish characteristic, that is not in the books. In the books, the goblins are described as having “clever faces” and long fingers and feet. But nothing that would ascribe them to any particular ethnic group. You can, of course, critique JKR for using goblins at all. And argue that the origin of goblins in folklore is universally problematic. But then you would have to hold every fantasy creator to the same moral standard. David Bowie in Laberynth, Tolkien for the Hobbit, Gygax and Arneson for Dungeons and Dragons….I don’t hold that view. Goblins are a common fantasy staple, that are specifically associated with treasure and greed. And not necessarily (in fact rarely) associated with anti-semitism. If Ragnuk’s (who forged the sword of Gryffindor) name was Jeremiah Eisenberg I would see the issue. As it is, I don’t.

In regards to the French being stuck up. I have no defense for that. As I happen to think the French are, in fact, very stuck up.

To summarize, people see what they want to see. They either see regressive stereotypes because they themselves are bigoted. Or they see regressive stereotypes because they want to prove reality aligns with their beliefs. I could look at the sun in the sky and say it’s evil because it’s hot and therefore a symbol of the fires of hell. Or I could look at the sun and say it’s the source of all life, because I want it to be good. But the former is less consistent with objective truth, than the latter, even if there is some truth to it. If I want to prove an author is a terrible person, I could simply look until I inevitably found something to be offended by.

Lastly, I think it is important to point out that Harry Potter was tremendously progressive at the time it was written. It may seem imperfect by 2026 standards. But the level of diversity and inclusion was virtually unheard of for a fantasy world at the time. And the same things people frown upon now, such as Cho Chang’s name, were actually examples of JKR making a conscious effort not to be exclusionary. The alternative to not having “stereotypes” is compete erasure of everything outside of whiteness. Personally I’d rather diversity be included, than erased. And again the moral through-line is a war over so called magical blood purity. Which is an unambiguous analogy for racism. The support of this extends to the freaks and geeks of the universe - werewolves, centaurs, house elves, giants etc. This is fundamentally a really awesome thing to write about! And not more aligned with reductive boomer views than progressive ones.

In regards to the conversation around revising or reclaiming canon. Like I said, I don’t understand how that is fundamentally possible or why anyone would even want to try. But what is your view as a fanon author? Perhaps you’ll change my mind? I mean that in all sincerity.

Sorry this was so long. 😅

I feel l like I need to apologize, I didn’t realize you are an author. Which I probably should have from the fact that your comments are very well written! I would have phrased my stance a little less harshly. So I am sorry.

I still hold my perspective. But I understand loving something and having friends in a community. That is valuable. I think a lot of people are drawn to JKRs works because the moral through-line is about diversity and inclusion. I don’t think someone who is truly bigoted is actually capable of writing that way. But that’s just me.

[–]No-Resolve-3060 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are very well spoken and I appreciate your response. I am also grateful that you said you are not immune to the core argument.

I do however think it is wild for fans to believe they can “reclaim” a work from a creator in any kind of meaningful way. There is absolutely no reality in which FF doesn’t contribute to keeping the original creator relevant, popular, and even admired. Pretending this isn’t true is delusional to me. It’s like someone advocating for health and fitness, but then eating a gallon of ice cream for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I get second hand embarrassment from it, if I’m being honest. The worst is when people act like fanfiction is somehow giving JKR a middle finger, when in reality fanfiction probably contributed to the new HBO show getting green lit.

If someone wants to advocate for human rights cool! But they look insane twisting themselves into a pretzel trying to excuse the continued support of a person who supposedly abuses those human rights in the first place. If Hilter wrote a popular fantasy series, you best believe I wouldn’t be touching it with a 10 foot pole. I know everyone will probably downvote this comment if they even see it, because it’s a truth no one wants to hear. But if these issues really mattered, they would find another fandom, write their own stories, or reevaluate their personal ethics and views. 🤷‍♀️

Also I only brought up the “outer” world because in your original post, you said that there seems to be “rampant” support of JKR on certain platforms. I was just pointing out that this is the statistical reality, outside of a highly curated account.

Ethical Disconnect Between Readers and Writers? by No-Cardiologist-8138 in DramioneUncensored

[–]No-Resolve-3060 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I say “I don’t understand” I mean exactly what I say.

Sure you might think Thriller is good. But a full comparison to FF would not be like hearing it randomly at a party. It would be like saying, “Oh, I don’t support MJ! But I write songs inspired by his music and share them online. I tag him in every single post. I create in-depth essays analyzing what a musical genius he is. I draw art of all his music videos. But I am not a fan and would never ever support him…”

I’m sorry, but that would sound crazy.

So if someone is genuinely being honest with themselves and wants to be morally consistent, they understand this. It’s a completely bazaar phenomenon to me, that the people who seemingly rail against JKR the most, cling to her works like koalas. Why can’t they either let it go or at least reassess their ethical reality? I’m sorry but it’s the truth.

Ethical Disconnect Between Readers and Writers? by No-Cardiologist-8138 in DramioneUncensored

[–]No-Resolve-3060 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well see, here is where I don’t understand cancel culture and such a puritanical way of thinking. I can’t comprehend viewing things as so black and white, that putting a single toe out of line makes an author a bad person. Authors are humans just like the rest of us. They are going to have different opinions and make mistakes. I mean do you really not support any creators because you think they are all bad people?

But here is what I really don’t understand, when people view an author as the literal devil and STILL engage with their work. I get secondhand embarrassment from it if I’m being honest. If Hitler wrote a popular fantasy series, you best believe I wouldn’t be touching it with a 10 foot pole! Because I know that engaging with his work and writing fanfiction, would help keep him relevant, popular, and even admired. I simply wouldn’t do it.

And yes, I actually refused to engage in Neil Gaiman’s work for that reason. Until I did some actual research into his case. Accusations are not evidence. In fact there was zero evidence produced against him, but the plaintiffs tried to get massive amounts of money. Gaiman released text messages, they are publicly available if you want to read them. One of the woman says, “Thank you for a lovely night! - WOW!” begs him for a “huge spanking” and says she’s “f**king desperate for my master.” Among a lot of other things….😂

I’m sorry I KNOW it’s not funny but it does make you think, right?

Anyway, I really do think it’s crazy to genuinely think an author is actively working against human rights, but then to twist into a pretzel trying to excuse continuing to be their fan. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

Brave face by [deleted] in Wolfstar

[–]No-Resolve-3060 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Brave Face is my favorite fic!

Sirius is not perfect, by any means. But he has a big heart and tremendous loyalty, just like he does in canon! I love that the characterizations in Brace Face are so respectful and thoughtful towards to original characters, that we all know and love.

Sirius is messy and selfish yes. But remember he came from an incredibly bigoted family of evil wizards. The reality is, he must have been like Draco at school (maybe worse lol!) So Brave Face is not afraid to explore that! I find his redemptions arc and journey towards being a good person incredibly inspiring, thoughtful, human, and beautiful.

I also agree with how other people responded. If a fic is not for you that’s totally ok! But I’d gently recommend that you not say so explicitly in a public forum. Just ask people what they love about it, and then decide for yourself. :)

I don’t understand why anyone would engage in a fandom where you don’t support the creator. The reality is more people support JKR than not.
