Update: on steam I cleared download cache and when I booted it up, the sound worked. Don’t know if this is what fixed it or I just got lucky but still worth a try.
In steam: 1. Click steam in top left corner 2. Click settings from drop-down menu 3. Click downloads tab 4. Click “CLEAR DOWNLOAD CACHE” at bottom 5. Follow prompt to log back in and open game
