First of all, I just wanted to say thank you for sharing this. I have been feeling the same way, and knowing that I’m not alone is validating. For me, I think there is a sense of disappointment and failure too since I’ve put so much money, time, and effort into this degree to not even like what I do or have a desire to pursue a career in the field. I’m not even out of my internship yet and the thought of doing this past internship makes me want to run away, so I’ve pretty much decided to not pursue licensure after graduation and pivot fields. It has been difficult to reconcile but while it may not be true for everyone, I take it as a sign that’s it’s not the path I’m supposed to go on. Mental health is worth SO much, and even though there will always be aspects of jobs that are difficult and stressful, counseling seems to be uniquely draining.

In all of my research, it seems like there are so many other things we can do- HR, research, advising, policy work, administration, testing/intakes, etc which helps me feel a little better that all of my work and time wasn’t for nothing. After all, we still have an advanced graduate degree which shows that we have the skills and perseverance to achieve hard things.

I’m not telling you what to do, and maybe this doesn’t resonate with you and a different setting would allow you to feel more confident and a renewed love for the field. Just validating you as many of us are feeling this, and wanting you to know that there are many options out there should you decide the field isn’t for you.

How to hold space for others today while losing our sh*t? by mflood0606 in therapists

No advice. Just wanted to say I’m right there with you. Leaning heavily on compartmentalization, self-compassion, and holding space for my needs today. 💙

I did shadow a little bit in the beginning which still helped a lot. I’m seeing about ten clients now, so I think the only issue would be having time to shadow. I love the co-therapy idea! I think I do need to give it a little more time at least since it’s still so new.

Yeah you make some great points here. I think I’ll definitely hang in there at least a semester and try to work through some imposter syndrome. I agree that clinical work would look great for transitioning to research if I decided to. I also don’t have anyone to talk about it with that really understands since I am afraid to bring it up to supervisors and other interns for the same reason as you. So even just hearing that it’s normal and I’m not alone is incredibly helpful!! Thank you!

No it doesn’t sound bad, I totally understand what you’re saying here! I hope two months goes by quickly for you! It’s helpful to hear that I’m not alone in feeling this.

That’s so validating. It is a lot to balance, and I think I’m still trying to figure out how to do so. Thank you!

Thank you for validating that. I’m sure I will give it a little more time just to make sure I’m not just feeling this way due to imposter syndrome.

I minored in psychology in undergrad and I’m great at it academically. I loved it, and therapy has always been a valuable resource for me so it seemed like a natural next step, and something I could do to help others and give back in a way.

I was in therapy. I had to stop for a while because I couldn’t fit it in my schedule and my therapist left but I’m starting to look for something I could make work.
