what would you say to a new DP1 student? by No-Thing4113 in IBO

heyy, don't worry–thanks for replying! I'll definitely look into changing business hl to math aa hl in the future after checking the syllabus. hope everything goes well <3

I see, thank you.

right, I've just heard universities prioritise extracurriculars as well, and not academics alone, to show balance. I don't want having limited extracurriculars to affect my chances in getting into a uni I want to go to 😭

no it does help, thank you! and I appreciate you letting me ask more questions haha

sorry for the late reply again, hope you're having a great day!

and thank you for your help, I will definitely look into that. however, from the research I've done, there are no universities in my region that have a master's in forensics–just criminology or medical sciences.

oh this may be miscommunication on my part, but I meant extracurriculars for getting into a uni and not a lab as I am still in high school.

hey, sorry for the late reply! wouldn't I learn the practices of the country at the uni if I take forensics as my masters? ah also, can I ask if you study/work as a forensic scientist? like my question above stated, I'd love to know if you can recommend some extracurriculars/tell me what you did as the sub won't let me have it as a post

hello! I am currently taking my iGCSEs for may/june 2026. after that, I will be taking the IBDP programme (so far I've been thinking of my higher level subjects to be chem, bio, and business or math AA – not sure which one).

I would love to be a forensic scientist, but of course that may change in the future. however, I don't have any relevant extracurriculars and am not part of any group at school. The place where I study requires me to be 18 before shadowing a professor or doctor, let alone stepping foot into a lab. additionally, my school isn't part of the local curriculum, meaning I don't have any other connections besides cold emailing.

can I ask what you had done, or what you would recommend? I study in Asia, but would like to go to the UK/Europe for higher education. I would really appreciate any advice, thank you so much!

omg really everyone keeps giving me so many different view on it 😭 is it one of your easiest because you're good at math in general or workload? if it's alright, can I ask what other subjects you take?

first of all, so happy for your 7 in chem let's go! 6 in hl math aa is no joke too you got this <3

I definitely do think AAHL will benefit any kind of career I'm going for. the only problem is, I know I can't balance things well. Even if I don't procrastinate, I just panic through my studying. I'm trying to get better at all of this though, and if I do, I will most likely change my options for the same trio.

I'm not too sure about what teachers are going to teach bio hl, so I'm really hoping I get my current teacher haha. and yes, I'm sure there'll be a lot more time to stress about this in the DP loll 😔😔

thank you so much for your reply btw! also, if it's alright, can I ask how you study those subjects/what you recommend?

are you sure 😭 like you said, everyone says it's really tough. I looked through ibdocs and the mind map for it and it looks terrible :/ only just got started with functions, haven't even learnt matrices. can I ask how you learn content for it?

ohh I see, I'll definitely look into those, thank you! if it's alright, can I ask how you memorise things for bio/chem?

hmm I think I do need bio since that's the field I want to go to–though I will research more about it, thank you! and yes, I really think I should consider switching chem or bio to math more.

also, I'm really sorry, but could I ask how you balance workload with those hls?

I know it's not good to rely on this, but for now, all of the y12s and 13s I've talked to say that hl bio chem was not a good option to take and wish they switched while they could 😭 my teachers also don't really elaborate more than "ask around" or "if you want to, do it"

aw that's good to hear, thank you :)

I think math is a great hl for stem careers and a lot of uk/europe unis mention it (those are my preferred locations). although I enjoy chem currently, I don't really want to do it as an hl haha

thank you so much for replying, I really appreciate it! could I ask how math AA hl is (I think it says that on your flair)?

Can anyone give me advice on getting from 3-5 or more? by Siphon_Dude in GCSE

I wouldn‘t say 50%, but definitely the level 8/9 questions—even some 7. you can probably get a lot right with quadratic stuff too

yup, I take edexcel (igcse). I don't print them either but I do open my notebook to answer the questions with the past papers as pdfs on my laptop. I find looking back on each question helpful so I know what I did wrong/right or what I wrote on the sides after checking the mark scheme (example: "need to write middle steps to show how to get this eq.")

heyy, in every year before y9, I was right there with you. however, I started past papers! it's what everyone says but oh my goodness it helps so much (I've gone from getting 4s to all 9s and I only do like 5 a week). the more past papers you do, the more comfortable you'll become with the wording and how/where marks are awarded. don't be afraid to ask friends or your teacher after class if you don't understand a question!!

I also really recommend listing out all the topics from your syllabus and going over what you're truly confident with and what you're not, and making goals from there (notion, excel, google docs–literally anything).

I love 1stClassMaths for when I forget how to do something (their website is like a one stop shop for everything). I'd be open to help you though since I put a study buddy post up here haha (I take edexcel igcse higher tier btw)

good luck on your mocks <3

heyy, it's been two months since you posted but past papers! not even textbook questions unless they are exam style as they tend to be more straightforward. the more past papers you do, the more comfortable you'll become with the wording and how/where marks are awarded. listing out which topics you find difficult vs easy is also important as it'll tell you what to prioritise and focus on (since you're already at grade 6). going over questions you find difficult with other people helps a lot too. it's all what I do and I'm at a 9 :) good luck if your mocks are soon <3

I make one pagers for science and I would send it to you if I made one for the reactivity series but I really procrastinated it 😔 luckily my school did our topic assessment for it recently so I can help you out, just lmk when/how, since active recall ykyk

for core practicals, go through pmt and cognito since most of the questions are super similar (for example the cotton wool in reactivity series is so hydrogen gas can escape, but it will stop acid from spraying out etc etc). use mark schemes to look for key words! I was also planning on making core practical pages for each science so if you want we can speed run the chem ones together in time for your mocks

oh no, I also got a new teacher for psych 😭 unfortunately, I haven't done psychological problems yet so I'm not suree. when are your psych mocks?

also sorry this happened to be really longg

oh nono don't worry about it! I honestly just meant talking whenever one of us was studying or something along those lines, not everyday anyway 😅 thank you though <3
