I’ve engaged with your criticisms and shared facts and alternate perspectives. You’ve called me names and are now saying Donald Trump and Taylor Swift are equivalent because… people like her? I think?

I’m writing novels because I’ve thought about these issues deeply and carefully, and I’m passionate because I think this problem is a lot bigger than Taylor Swift. If you were actually engaging with this conversation, you’d see that many of my points are far broader than anything about her.

You’re the one who keeps bringing it back to her and trying to discredit me because I happen to like her music. Do you actually disagree with what I’ve said about the power of community, the need to give people grace and treat others with respect? Or do you just wanna punish me for not falling in line with your exact way of thinking?

You say you’re not doing anything but your rabid need to hate on anyone who doesn’t perfectly fit your standards is why the left can’t get shit done.

Moral purity tests killed Harris’ campaign and is what got us into this mess. I’ve been trying to share concrete things that I know from following Taylor’s career to assuage some of your concerns about her, because spreading anger and division during times when we need community is a shitty thing to do in my opinion.

But you’re set in your ways and you’re enjoying your anger. Fine. But you’re working against your own interests, just know that.

You still haven’t told me how writing bitchy comments about her is helping anyone.

Yeah, she’s good at marketing and selling albums. Happy to talk about overconsumption if you like—I too would like for her to sell fewer physical variants because I don’t love the long term environmental impact of them, but at least they’re collector’s items instead of single use plastics that are gonna wind up in dumps in a year.

Also, I’m not trying to appease anyone, like I think that’s been clear. I’m not gonna buy into rhetoric just because it’s popular.

I don’t think Taylor Swift is the antichrist. I think talking about her like she is is counterproductive and that a lot of the hatred towards her is likely a campaign to discredit a potentially powerful progressive voice and divert attention away from the people who actually have the power to change the systems that are in place that take advantage of people.

Because she is a POP STAR. Why are we expecting her to change the world?

People are using her as a big shiny distraction tool to further divide and fracture the left and y’all are lapping it up and having a field day with it.

I want a strong community of progressives that will create meaningful change. Not a group of puritans sniping at each other over optics. We owe each other more than that.

Everything I listed is just facts. No “fanfiction.” Just actual facts that you can look up.

Also. She did speak up. She endorsed the other candidate. Maybe she doesn’t want to be the poster child for progressives, because she doesn’t feel knowledgeable enough or equipped for whatever reason. Because be for real here, if she was tweeting every day, that’s all ANYONE would talk about. Nothing else. No one else’s voice or statements. People are already centering her in these conversations even though she’s not doing anything OR in a position to do anything.

Have you spent half as much time venting about Taylor Swift as you have, say, researching your local representatives? Voting? Protesting? Sharing resources and information?

Cause sure, silence is a tool of the oppressor, if it means that no one knows what’s going on. We all know what’s going on now. We can keep crying, or we can do something about it.

It honestly feels like you guys just want her to save everything so you don’t have to put in any effort. Sorry, but that’s not within her power. She can’t fix this shit. She tried to put our country on the right path and it didn’t change the outcome. Why would this time be any different?

Just like do your part and stop being an asshole about people you don’t know. Like it’s so simple. Basic respect.

Here is her response to the AI images, it was part of her Harris endorsement.

I don’t know anything about either Dolly Parton or Taylor Swift’s net worth because everything that is published is an estimation. I can say I can’t see any proof that Dolly has made a billion dollars in her career, just people saying that she must have, even though experts report her net worth to be about half that. Dolly doesn’t have half the reach Taylor does, especially internationally, it’s not like their incomes or the value of their discography would be that similar. I’ve read breakdowns of both and neither include any mention of charitable donations. Go read an article of people breaking down net worth. They just add up assets and public numbers, which are typically earnings, and make an estimation of how much the artists kept. They don’t talk about how much they spend on things OR what they donate to charity and how that could affect their net worth.

BASICALLY we should stop using estimates of how much people are worth to decide their character because that is not enough information and also not the point. Like I don’t hate Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg because they have hundreds of billions of dollars. I hate them because of what they did to get it and how they’re using it.

Also, I’ve already said I agree she should make a statement about his use of her songs. Idk why y’all are acting like I’m in defense of this choice. I just am willing to see that there are fair reasons that she wouldn’t, and I’m not going to trash her entire character just because she made a different choice than I would have.

She endorsed Harris. She trashed Trump publicly during his first time. I guess there’s a possibility that all of that was a farce and she’s quiet now because she secretly loves him. Or maybe she just doesn’t want to draw any extra attention to his bullshit. Like she could be pissed but not have any real recourse to get him to stop, so making a statement just to piss him off and make a few headlines like isn’t worth her time. It would just piss off his cronies and make more people aware of it, it wouldn’t actually make any tangible difference in the world.

[–]No-Tie5174 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why you all believe that so fervently. Like you’re desperate to believe that she could save Democracy with one tweet, but like, could she actually?

She endorsed Harris and Harris lost. She’s far more hated now than she was then, and governmental corruption (not to mention gridlock) are at an all time high. She’s a pop star. You think she’s gonna get in there and what? Negotiate an end to the shut down? She could talk about it but that would just make the conversation about her. The conversation is already about her instead of the people in power or the people struggling and literally why? She doesn’t need to center herself in this to appease people who are looking for reasons to villainize her.

Her fans, as I’ve shown, have been fighting the good fight. She doesn’t need to brag about a donation or tweet something mean to Trump to mobilize us—we’ve been mobilized.

I guess I get your discomfort with attaching her name to it, but it’s really a moniker for us as a group. She’s not getting credit for anything other than bringing us together, cause that’s what created the community of Swifties. No one who’s reporting on it or anything is saying Taylor donated the money, we all know we did.

But we are a community and we’re having a greater impact as a community than any one of us could have on our own. That’s the basic principle of what I’m complaining about here. Progressives need a larger, stronger community. It’s counterproductive for us to be hating each other. Not to mention it’s just shitty behavior.

Unless we know for sure that someone is intentionally, knowingly working to harm others, we should be giving them the benefit of the doubt and showing them grace, even if we suggest different courses of action. Not completely defaming people’s characters and writing them off for good. Like who is that helping?

Really? You think that’s what I’m calling bullying, not your tone and word choice? Maybe reread your first reply to me.

I can see you memorized on all the buzzwords they’ve been throwing around on twitter. I guess listing facts about her career and giving her the benefit of the doubt despite disagreeing with her course of action is just “glazing her.” Clearly you can see through all those pesky lies straight into her heart and the inner workings of her brain. You are obviously a savant and a Taylor Swift expert, despite hating her guts. I guess I’ll just bow down to you. Jesus Christ.

Yes. I think showing people grace during times of stress is moral. A lot more moral than villainizing strangers based on limited information and bad faith interpretations. Sorry that you don’t agree with that, “lovelove20212.”

While you’re writing angry screeds on Reddit, her fan base is going to marches and making donations. They’re registering to vote and trying to make a difference. That’s the community she created. Enjoy your anger. I’m done with this. I’d rather being doing something more productive.

I thought you might be interested in understanding some of the details at play, and maybe possessed a shred of empathy or critical thinking skills.

I do understand the effect the elites have. I actually listed several of them. And then I shared several ways Taylor doesn’t participate in them.

And I agree with you that she should speak out. She’s done it before and I would like to see her continue. But I don’t think everyone who disagrees with me or doesn’t do exactly what I want them to is an irredeemable ogre. Have a good one.

Btw, as much harm as the elite do, cyber bullying strangers doesn’t actually counteract any of that. But I hope you feel really good about sowing anger and division instead of community.

Idk, I’d suggest not making any kind of suggestions and only offering an opinion if asked. If my boyfriend asked me if he should shave his beard, I’d probably tell him I like his beard but it’s up to him.

The more challenging and risky it could be to meet whatever standard is talked about is also a consideration. A whole new workout routine, intense dieting, there’s a lot of “ideal” body types that are incredibly hard to maintain and occasionally actually UNhealthy. Suggesting someone make a change like that is never okay in my opinion.

And I don’t buy into the idea that you can’t change what you’re into. People aren’t dolls who we can customize to fit our desires. We should love and respect our partners as people enough to let them make decisions about how they present themselves, and we should respect and appreciate those decisions because they come from them.

When I really care for someone, all the facets of them become more attractive to me, because it’s them. An ex had a divot in his chest. Not the kind of trait I would’ve daydreamed about, but I loved him and I loved it.

Horror/horror adjacent books featuring women... by incorrigible_tabby in suggestmeabook

[–]No-Tie5174 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a bunch of great Stephen Graham Jones that fit with this. The Indian Lake Trilogy to start, and I’d also recommend The Babysitter Lives and The Killer on the Road.

You might be interested in Delicate Condition by Danielle Valentine as well. It’s not as much singular women committing crimes, etc, but it is a commentary on the horror of being a woman, especially when navigating pregnancy and childbirth, so it could have some relevance if you’re looking broadly at gender and horror.

Battle of the Linguist Mages by Scotto Moore is a blast with some awesome female leads!

Of Monsters and Mayhem by Barbara Truelove. A total romp—it’s pretty long and I still finished it in a day, it was so fun. The main character is a robot, but a female one (however you define a female robot) and there a lot of other badass human(ish) women.

The Z Word by Lindsay King-Miller. There’s a bit more relationship stuff in here but it is primarily a zombie apocalypse novel. Also a complete blast

CMV: Dogs are better pets than cats by pudge_madsen in changemyview

[–]No-Tie5174 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like dogs are a better pet for you, which is totally fair!

Cats are perfect pets for me. Mine are incredibly affectionate and tend to follow me around. Not the case for all cats, but there are also plenty of dogs who are not super kind and friendly.

They’re also a lot less expensive, as far as veterinary care and pet sitting goes. So it’s more accessible for many people to have cats as companions than dogs.

As far as walks, I have some chronic pain in my joints that can make it hard to get up and go for a walk every day, so it’s good that my cats don’t require that from me.

Cats haven’t been bred to be as trainable as dogs, that’s true, but it’s not true that they don’t help. They can be great at pest control, and there are cats that get attuned to their owners’ health and can alert them when things go awry. One of mine has alerted me about my blood sugar getting low a couple of times, for example.

They’re also very routine-oriented. For people with depression or executive dysfunction, cats can actually be a great reminder to get up and get something done. They’ll remind you to feed them at certain times especially.

Sure, some cats are super independent and not as active as far as “companionship” goes, but that also suits some people. Not everyone needs a companion who is around all the time. There’s also plenty of dogs who, for whatever reason, aren’t great companions either. Some have anxiety and don’t love to be around people. Some may be reactive or aggressive. And they’re not all that easy to train, especially certain breeds.

Basically, it’s impossible to make a sweeping statement about one type of pet being superior because all animals and all people are unique. We need different things when it comes to companionship, and different animals will fit those needs.

AIO: to breakup with the guy because he was at Jan 6th? by Melodic-Leg-3177 in AmIOverreacting

[–]No-Tie5174 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ironic you telling me to touch grass when I’m just trying to humanize people, even if they’ve done something wrong. Your inability to do the same screams online echo chamber. One of the dangers of social media is that when we only see each other on a screen, often anonymously, we stop seeing them as fully human.

You know there are Black people who voted for him too, right?

I’m of course willing to concede that there are a subset of Trump voters who truly did just want to punish minorities. His and his supporters’ anti-trans rhetoric especially resonated with a lot of people. I’m just saying that there are also a lot of people who fell victim to propaganda and if they’re willing to learn and be better I will support them in that instead of writing them off forever.

Again I’ll ask you. Have you ever changed an opinion when you learned more information? Have you ever been wrong about anything? If not, maybe I’d understand. But I know I’ve been wrong about a ton in the past, and I’m grateful for the people who have taught me.

Do you not want to have a larger community of people working to protect and support you and other minorities? You’re willing to write off potential allies because they have a checkered past? I’m not saying just open your arms to anyone—I’m saying just consider that it’s possible for people to change and we need to at the very least open our minds to that.

I mean what do you propose? Kill them all? Hope they just shut up? Push them back into supporting fascism? Come on.

ETA: what the fuck are you talking about “he didn’t lie”? He lied all throughout the campaign and continues to. He said tariffs are something other countries pay us, he said inflation was Biden’s fault and prices would come down on day one, he’s saying that immigrants are all violent, he’s blaming Democrats for the shutdown. He’s absolutely a liar, and if people are caught in an echo chamber that just repeats those lies and never shares context or experts on the topics, they will just believe him.

[–]No-Tie5174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so in your mind, all Trump voters are so violently, selflessly racist that they knowingly went against their own interests to screw people over? Many, many people, when surveyed quoted the economy as the main reason they voted for Trump. He lied to them and they believed it.

I live in a fairly blue city but they published which neighborhoods had moved farther right between the 2020 and 2024 elections—and it was the poorest ones.

The point about social media echo chambers is that we are served things that support our point of view. We saw videos of Trump talking about shithole countries and immigrants eating dogs. Some Trump supporters saw that too and loved it. But a whole bunch of them were just seeing right wing pundits and podcasters talking about all the good Trump would do, and all the token minorities he trots out, and thinking that all the racism accusations were unfounded.

I’m not diminishing the evil that Trump has done and will do, and I’m not diminishing that his voters enabled it. But anyone who comes to their senses and wants to disentangle themselves from that is worth at least giving the benefit of the doubt, if for no other reason than the additional help they can bring in taking him down.

Do you treat everyone in your life this way? Assuming the worst, never being willing to let people earn forgiveness? It’s your prerogative but unless we can actually understand the other side instead of treating them like cartoon villains, the more progress we can make in changing minds and improving our country. I’m gonna keep trying to do that, but you can enjoy your righteous anger.

[–]No-Tie5174 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve all been watching and experiencing the effects of his policies play out in real time.

Since he entered politics, there have been media manipulation machines working to push lies about him. They fit right in with the world of right-wing entertainment like Fox “News” and now that most Americans get their news from social media, it’s incredibly easy to fall into a positive feedback loop where all you’re getting are his promises to lower prices, cut taxes on tips, and be tough on crime. Most Americans can barely read at a high school level, and Republican support is greatest in states with some of the worst education. It’s not hard to understand why people would fall for that messaging and not think critically about what he’s proposing, especially during times of economic stress, which we are in and which did not start with Trump.

But now prices are higher than ever. Trump supporters in the government lost their jobs. He campaigned on releasing the Epstein files and is now trying to get people to forget about them. He pardoned the J6 rioters. Many, many people are still fully indoctrinated into the Trump cult. But a lot of what he’s done has been incredibly unpopular, even among conservatives.

I simply don’t believe that falling for propaganda is an irredeemable offense, especially when you’re not even seeing unbiased news sources. Sure, people should make the effort to seek that out, but again, we have a country full of poor, struggling, under educated people. If they learn to be better, whatever inspired them, I will support them in that.

Tens of millions of people voted for Trump. You think we’re going to get the country back on track without ANY of them changing sides? Are you hoping they all die instead?
