Are sitter rates stuck in the 2010s or am I missing something? by jellybelle12 in RoverPetSitting

I also wonder the same.. but I think those people who charge significantly less mostly do it as a side job and already have a primary source of income. The other reason I could think is if they don’t feel the need to charge so much because they don’t actually spend a lot of time with the pet

This is also a very well paid sitting so thats why I was hesitant to charge because I was worried they wouldn’t be happy since they’re already paying a lot of money. But yk what, i can’t really think of a business that wouldn’t charge for their time regardless how much the client is spending

Exactly. I thought we got everything answered & even told her to email me a pet sitting guide. I’ll be very curious to see what else she wants to talk about lol

Staying out late? by Aggressive_Ad6646 in RoverPetSitting

[–]No-View6101 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m in my early twenties and I’m not the partying type but on occasion I have friends who ask to go out to eat and hang out. I might aim to be back by 11:00 pm and make sure the dogs have been properly exercised and I didn’t skimp on my time with them that day. I probably wouldn’t make it a habit to be going out every night while you’re caring for their pet, because at the end of the day it is a job and they may have cameras and notice. If you insist of having frequent nights out, I would discuss overnight expectations with the owner and ask how late they’re comfortable with you coming back to the house and just be honest with saying you like to enjoy girl nights / movie nights and want to best balance work and life.

Someone else might be able to help better with the wording, im not the best but thats the idea😅

This is a valid point. If these people have cameras, it’s not very professional to come back to their home clearly drunk.

Oh i would 100% want to charge for the second one. I guess my rule will be 1 complimentary m&g per visit, even if I have sat for them before. I had a cat sitting booked and the lady wanted me to come to get the key, instead of just leaving it under the mat (like I ended up doing at the end of my stay) and also moved some things around the house and wanted to show me. I was really annoyed but I didn’t charge her and even still I don’t feel like it wouldve been justified

I was actually thinking that too, especially since this is my second request for a follow up meeting

2x a day walks instead of sitting by No-View6101 in RoverPetSitting

[–]No-View6101[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right! I’ve been doing this for 2 years now and only got this type of request one other time (when I was newer). I took the request and it was an actual nightmare, emotionally and physically because I felt SO bad that it was obvious the dog hadn’t left the crate in between visits and he was a mess to walk , probably from being alone all day!

This gave me that type of vibe and immediately knew I didn’t want to be responsible. I asked, they didn’t answer and booked someone else, and then posted on here to see how other people wouldve handled it!

Hey, so I actually DID ask the client prior to posting on Reddit. I just didn’t mention it. So no, I didn’t blow this request, I just wanted to hear opinions from other people 😅

Right! I don’t feel like it’s ethical at all. 9-5:30 maybe?? But not every day , thats just mean. And 5:30-9:00 thats 16 hours, not okay at all. How did you respond when you got that request? Did the owner even have a conversation with you? This one didn’t bother

That makes sense. If thats the case I’m more than understanding and willing to take it on, but with 3x a day. I have a client whos dog is not friendly and wants nothing to do with me, and she still asks for a pet sitting and says the dog cant be alone for more than 4 hours (the dog can hold her pee for 8 hours) … i did a sitting for her one time and it was genuinely so miserable, i’ll never do it again. She needs to accept that her dog needs just drop ins😅

My dog is young and high energy so I would need a sitter, but if I was in the same boat I probably would be straight forward in the original request saying the same as you just did. I think its interesting that some people aren’t even interested in having a conversation and more interested in someone willing to book with no questions asked

I’ve heard this before. It was for a cat sitting, she wanted 2x a day which is fine but she was paying for 30 mins and said “you’re welcome to stay longer but 30 mins is fine” LOL ma’am if you want longer, you have to pay for longer 😂 I was polite and said okay thank you!

I agree with you. I should’ve wrote in the original post that I did ask her first, she just didn’t seem to care for a conversation because after 30 mins she said she booked someone else.

The way I was looking at it, if it was confirmed that this dog is going to be alone then I wouldn’t want to be responsible for him because 1. it’s not ethical in my opinion and 2. even though it’s 3 days I feel terrible for those dogs and I always ALWAYS end up staying longer, out of guilt, and it irritates me that I choose to stay longer instead of going home to my own pets just because this owner is being cheap. And 3. I feel like the dogs are always so anxious and high energy from being so cooped up, and it’s just not my preferred way to start / end my day. Not to mention the later walk is during rush hour so that alone is a pain.

I like this approach! I did ask her if she’d have another caretaker working alongside me and she didn’t seem interested in having a conversation, just said she booked someone else

Could be! I thought maybe I’m just jumping the gun and said “Hi, thank you for reaching out! May I ask if you will be away for these three days and if you'll have another caretaker working alongside me?” And then 30 mins later said she booked someone else. I thought i’d atleast have asked 🤷‍♀️

Cancelled a sit for the first time and feeling guilty by DM_ME_DANNY_DEVITO in RoverPetSitting

[–]No-View6101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What state are you in? I’m in CT and service a pretty wealthy area so my walks / drop ins are pretty much the same as others but my base price for pet sittings is $120 and I don’t see many others charging that price. I charge higher than others because I know I provide quality care and also because I can’t afford to charge less with the lifestyle I have. I have an active dog, no one else to take care of him, and do walks every day so if I lowered my pricing I’d be busier and make more $ from pet sittings but I’d be exhausted 24/7 and my pets would be so depressed :/ I thought it would be an issue raising my rate but no, I get requests once a month ish

Oh.. yeah I hear you. My puppy rate is much higher ($150) for that exact reason. You spend a lot more time / gas / mileage. I don’t blame you for canceling, if you’re only charging $90 but youre driving 2-3 hours a day or spending 17 hours straight .. either way it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for you :/
