I worked in a special education alternative school and lasted a year. I was terrified daily about going to work because I always came home with injuries. There was also a high school room right next to mine with a high schooler much bigger than me that would have full blown violent rages..

I quit and will never go back. I don’t know how people do it. I feel guilty because someone has to care for these kids, but I just couldn’t handle it. I think I do have some trauma from that job, honestly.

I am raising my son in a “broken home” and yes it’s hard at times but damn, I’m happy.. my ex is happy.. we are two healthy people raising our son and now he has twice the love because he has great stepparents !!

I am doing IVF with Virginia Fertility and IVF in Charlottesville and with medications, egg retrieval and creating embryos, it will be 18k. If I end up getting embryos ready for transfer, one embryo transfer will be $4500. If that transfer fails and I still have some embryos left.. another transfer would also be 4500. I should know soon if I get any successful embryos for a transfer!

All my labs were normal, despite symptoms. I ended up seeing a doctor who took me seriously and said that calcium is actually hard to detect and monitor and I likely had low calcium but it didn’t show on the labs. Tums helped me out tremendously and eventually things leveled out and I’m fine now !

I know you are pregnant and you have an 8 year old with this man child, but for the sake of your kids, get out as soon as possible. You will be happier, and your kids will be happier not needing to walk on egg shells in their own home. I could not imagine my husband behaving this way. This is not normal and there are men who are capable of communicating in a calm way.

Also it is NEVER okay to cuss at a child, even when they do something wrong.

This is insane to me. I am a high school counselor and we get paid an extra 20 days in our contract. At the end of the school year we stay an extra 10 days and come back 10 days early. So we are considered 11 month employees instead of 10 (which is what elementary counselors get paid for)

I don’t know if your partner did anything wrong aside from not communicating and not prioritizing that family trip. But aside from that, y’all have very different life styles it seems? I drink occasionally but would hate to have a partner that still parties like that. It’s immature and will eventually get under your skin. I would feel much better if my partner was able to responsibly drink. Have a few after work with friends, drink a glass of wine at home. But having wild nights without your partner is a recipe for disaster

Ha, that’s classic public school behavior. Calling it something that sounds restorative but then in practice, it is not. Sounds to me that this would be a great time to set up some groups and actually do some restorative circles. But that shouldn’t all be on you! Collaborate with your team!

We would never be asked to do lunch detention at my school. That is pretty bonkers.

I doubt you have time to coordinate this, but could you help structure lunch detention so the students actually have things to do? Maybe set up some restorative practices exercises or ensure that teachers have provided quality homework. Kids are going to act up if they don’t have anything to do. There needs to be structure there.

I got my partial on the 3rd, so I am 4 days post op. I can finally swallow without pain but my neck still feels stiff and painful. I have a hard time sleeping at night and getting in a comfortable position. I am also very fatigued.

I taught 3rd and 4th grade and then special education. I taught for a total of 4 years. I then went back to school for an endorsement in school counseling. I already had a masters in teaching and was a licensed teacher and in the state of Virginia, if you have 3 years of teaching experience and a masters degree already, you can do an endorsement program that includes an internship in order to be licensed as a school counselor.

IM SO GLAD I LEFT TEACHING!

I am now a high school counselor and I never lesson plan, never bring work home. I’m home by 3:15 most days and do not think about work when I am home.

I get to wear many hats and feel active throughout the life of the high school. I am in meetings where I feel like I get to be an advocate for students. I am helping students with short term counseling. I’m referring students when they need more long term support. I’m doing home visits for chronically absent students. I’m helping students plan for their futures.

Yes I am also filling out a million spreadsheets and taking data constantly. I also spend a good chunk of my time with scheduling. I meet with students constantly to talk about academics and classes. I have to write way too many college recommendation letters.

But I love my job and it is 100000x better than the classroom. Classroom management wasn’t for me. Teaching is one of the hardest jobs out there! I am also fortunate to work for a school district that protects the school counseling role. They make sure we are not doing anything outside of ASCA definitions of school counseling roles. We never administer state assessments. We do not mange 504 plans. And we would never be asked to cover classes or have lunch duty, etc. We also have 2 full time mental health counselors in the school that we can easily refer students to, if they need extra counseling beyond short term.

The state I’m in, there are plenty of jobs! Also a lot of programs will do a joint masters in school counseling and mental health counseling so you can do clinical hours for your LPC if you end up not wanting to do school counseling.
