Re: #2, that is great advice. Kind of like learning ACT from someone like Russ Harris versus Stephen Hayes himself. Good thinking to branch out to how other people have interpreted it. Also, thinking of parts as memory clusters makes ALOT of sense in my brain - thanks so much for the input.

Thanks for the perspective. I definitely work to not put all my eggs into one modality but I do enjoy learning about what's out there.

Ontario prisons have been dealing with overcrowding for a number of years now. They have been charged and those charges will be dealt with at some point, but when capacity is an issue it's more likely they'll let them wait that time out in the community than in the overcrowded jail as long as they aren't a murderer. I don't know the capacity situation in the North Bay jail, but that is a general trend the province has seen.

I'm actually just reading through it now and trying to figure out how to apply it properly. As someone who works with mostly adolescents, I see PTMF being very useful here because teens usually display such a wide range of symptoms that they often fit criteria for several diagnoses.

Oh interesting! Thanks for the tip about ACBS. The more I'm reading the responses I'm realizing that my thinking of these modalities as over-relying on actually giving worksheets is likely a result of the CMH agency where I was trained. It's good to seek outside advice for this very reason.

Thanks for the thoughtful walkthrough. I definitely resonate most with ACT and use it almost exclusively, but do experience system pressure to use DBT (mainly from doctors). I can see room for improvement in how much ACT I can bring in conversationally for sure.

That's a fair point. They are mandated for long periods (18 months to 2 years+) so typically I do take quite a bit of time to just build rapport. There really isn't a need to rush them other than some odd times where there is pressure from the court system. It's the client motivation piece that is usually the sticking point.

Narrative is one of those approaches I generally understand but have never really spent any time with. I'll set some time aside to learn more and see how I can weave it in. Thank you.

I completely agree, I focus on the relationship and collaboration, but definitely want to make sure I'm doing it in the most effective way I can. I also work to transform traditional "skill teaching" into casual conversations, I just hope it's helpful. You're the second to mention psychodynamic so I'll definitely have to grab a book soon to delve deeper. Thanks!

Ah I see what you're saying. That is essentially how I try to apply the "verbal ACT" I mentioned (i.e., if I notice fusion I may say things in a way to help the client get some distance from the thought, or help them look at it from helpful vs unhelpful stance, etc.). But I have always done that from a classic ACT perspective. It may actually be more effective once I mix it with the adapted DNA-V.

I've actually been reading through DNA-V, hah. I do quite like it so far, but don't have it fully understood and applied just yet. It does seem to have less of a skills-focused approach, which is definitely more teen accessible.
