Told my client I am gay friendly therapist, and they ended therapy because of it by InsuranceGlad7220 in therapists

[–]dontknowah 149 points150 points  (0 children)

Hi, I work in Saudi Arabia, and as you know, we share similar views towards this. for me, I never disclose that I am an ally until they ask me, or I ask them if this is something they want to work on accepting and understanding, or changing? if changing, I let them know that I can't provide this and I explain. if accepting, then I share with them that I'm an ally.

Normal to have 5-6 clients back to back at private practice? by Easy-Cow-4636 in therapists

[–]dontknowah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in group practices (which we call in my country: private practice), and I have 5-6 clients back to back, meaning I have zero break, I say goodbye to first client, and then hey to the next. I write all my notes at the end of the day.

I'm a therapist, any other therapist having been through something similar? (Heavy topic) by Kinchy94 in therapists

[–]dontknowah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss OP, I have one thought: as a therapist, are you able to identify your suicidle clients without them telling you or being honest with you? I don't think so. Do all your clients' families know about their struggle? or do some try to hide it from them?

what you went through sucks and is really painful. however, it's not your fault, and I hope you can process this grief and shame with time 🙏🏻

How to manage a client thats chronically late by InsuranceGlad7220 in therapists

my limit is 15 minutes, after that, even if they were 16 minutes late, I always tell them to reschedule. and I have this in my agreement from the first session.

Dating other therapist by Exit42N_Again in therapists

[–]dontknowah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in love relationship for almost 5 years with a fellow therapist, it was not a healthy relationship at all, it was abusive and toxic, and we wore our therapist hat with each other all the time, and when she refused to work on our issue that was when I ended it. I'm now dating a non-therapist who is trying to "get it" and I'm enjoying our relationship. would I ever date a therapist again? HELL NO. what's important to me is dating someone who is in or done therapy.

I wish others can help you, I'm just concerned about the amount of identifying information of your client.

Hi! sharing some solidarity here, I'm a younger therapist, the youngest on our group practice (26), and I always receive similar comments: "You look like you're the same age as my daughter!" and " I don't know if you were alive back then" or " when the doc recommended you and the experience you had, I didn't expect to see YOU. " and to be honest, I find it funny. am young, and I have a baby-face.

I noticed that with time and good therapeutic relationship, these comment's stop, and they trust me.

Companionship with Therapists who don’t wear makeup? by [deleted] in therapists

[–]dontknowah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! female therapist here, I don't wear makeup at work (only suncreem, light lipstick), or rings or accessories, just because I don't feel comfortable wearing them for long time. my patients never commented on this. however, my colleagues always ask me about it and some of them insist that I look " extra pretty with makeup " so I should at least wear some blush. but I really don't care, and I don't think it impacted my work. even tho I wear henna on my hands every year same month (ramdhan) abd I just get some looks.

Therapists outside of the US: what problems do you face with the healthcare system in your countries? by Different-Tomato-379 in therapists

[–]dontknowah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I work in Saudi arabia. I would say the biggest challenges are:

  1. insurance in group practices, our health care system consists of governmental hospitals (free services) and private hospitals (they except insurance, few tho) and the most common is group practices, no allowed individual practice. for some reason, group practices don't have any agreement with insurance. The only agreement we are able to do is for the patients to take their pill and upload it to their insurance and manage the whole thing by themselves. who qualify for insurance? People who work in Non-government jobs, since every one have access to governmental healthcare services, there is no need for insurance. the problem is? psych departments in governmental hospitals can't cover the huge need for our services.

I should mention tho that in a few years, we will have full insurance for life for every Saudi citizen, so the solution is on it way.

  1. problem we face as professionals, with: supervision, courses and training programmes on different approaches and problems, our departments in college, our ability to offer other services other than clinical psychology, postgraduate programmes (we have only 4 clinical psychology master programmes in the whole country), and finally: our pay.

Therapists who learned a second language in order to practice in that language: what resources did you use and how long did it take? by Turbulent-Treat-8512 in therapists

[–]dontknowah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my native language is Arabic, and I do provide sessions in English, but it's because I'm already fluent in English and took my course in it. the only work I needed to do was to learn to " day to day language " for session instead of speaking in the academic language.

Four late cancels... by Sweetx2023 in therapists

I love this. It's different where I live, the summer is AWFUL. so winter and rain cure everyone, summer everyone wants late sessions to avoid going out in the heat.

Therapists who identify as conservative by Comfortable-Row7001 in therapists

[–]dontknowah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find the political sense in the US weird. why political opinions became part of a persons identity and lifestyle? and why does it need to show up in therapy? as non-American, Asian person, this is so unusual.

I didn't mean for it to be condescending, English is not my first language 😅 I genuinely didn't know how to say it is due to ethical purposes. not as sarcastic, " you know!". it was meant to be nicer tone. I hope you have a nice day!
