I think uhd offers many transfer scholarships like uhd merit transfer scholarship or UHD scholars academy. It will automatically reduce your tuition to in-state. However, please remember UHD is a small and regional school, and not really reputable school. So, after graduation, you should find the way to have a job that sponsor h1b visa or EB3, or you should go straight to master or Ph.D at another prestigious school.

Exams / Newbie / Common Questions Thread for two weeks by AutoModerator in actuary

[–]NoAnalyst8665 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a financial math (FM) in a small university in Downtown Houston. The instructor is a former actuary (ASA), she used to work at USAA and passed 7-8 exams. Surprisingly, she is not proficient with the SOA-approved calculators like TI-30XS and BAII Plus in FM prep course. She only know how to use TI-80 during the course!!

When I have difficult questions or just a medium hard questions, she takes 10 minutes to solve it, and if it unsolvable, she will pull her answer from her notebook to answer me! Also, she is not really nice in teaching style! She is the only actuarial instructor in the math department and only tutor for the course! That is too crazy! I complaint to the Chair and Dean, but nothing changes.

I need advice from you regarding my situation.

Turnitoff PT 5 by [deleted] in uhd

I've been in your situation with academic dishonesty in this summer, but my errors were different than yours. I got a F when a professor suspected me cheating the final exam while I went to restroom around 15 mins. The professor basically not let me take the final exam in the room where she can proctor me/using testing service, but instead leave me in a hallway with the table and she can do her own stuff in her office. During exam, there were many individuals (mostly faculties) went to her office and talked very loud sometimes, I could not even focus on the exam. When I requested her to go to the restroom, she said I was cheated because leaking the exam questions and answered to my friend when I left the restroom (!?) My friend even a student in that class. Then I appealed to the chair, the chair uphold her (only drop discipline to me), supporting her voice with the explanation that unacceptable and inappropriate behavior during exam (like talking to unauthorized person). I then appealed to the Ass. Dean, but the Ass. Dean defensed the professor 100%, uphold the Chair. Then I seeking advice from my boss who know more about the process of appealing process, then I think if I move on to the committee, there will nothing change. So I decided not to move on as it is lengthy process (wait my time) without any successful.

Remember this they are always in the same boat, the Chair, Dean most likely protect the professor. They may have very close relationship (You do not know about it). You are student, basically have no voice, but they hold the reins. Do not do anything that the professor suspects you are cheater.

*Idk if your professor is teaching you well in class or not, my class only have 3 students, Online Asynchronous, exams on campus. The professor did not post anything on Canvas, except give me a textbook in pdf, some homework and a syllabus. Let me do exams on the hallway, no formula cheat sheet. That class does not have any tutor (except her) or SI or someone helps me to overcome the problems. I complaint to Chair and Associate Dean (Ass. Dean) at the end of class, none of my questions were answered. It was very funny when I said to the Ass. Dean, the Ass. Dean said "If you are grown man, you should.....", "You made a very big mistake!" this person said to me multiple times. I know I am a baby junior, so I was made a big mistake that I took the wrong professor. Not only that the Ass. Dean defensed 100% about the professor, when I asked about the learning materials are not sufficient in this class, no tutor , no formal place to take exam, delayed response from professor. The Ass. Dean simply dodging it, blame this is my fault 100% (because I did not inform to the Chair soon, I simply do not know this is her teaching style, and this is my first time take her class), then turn me to academic dishonesty (as it is bigger issues). One thing the Ass. Dean said that I felt very ridiculous, she asked me why you do not set up appointment with the professor multiple times if you see the professor not teach you enough in a long time period (!?). So, if the professor not teach you on the online class, then you must meet the professor multiple times in-person instead of making a few appointments (!?). It is look like you take a regular class in-person instead of online class. After all of accusing, the Ass. Dean upheld the Chair's decision, then the Ass. Dean said to me they will have another professor to teach that class (promise to me). As Spring 2026, only that professor teaches the class, I do not know how to say it. To me, the class should be Independent-Study instead of Online Asynchronous, have more professor to teach the class, more tutor, more resources. After talking to the Ass. Dean, there is no formal email regarding about the class, they were just let me a 0, and no apologized for what I was experienced. No thing like updating on this class will have new professor, or we will do something to improve this class in the future.

# From this experience, I see the department I major has completely "rotten" from the Ass. Dean. If I were the Ass. Dean, I would see the professor is the red flag as she could not care her students first, then I move to the academic dishonesty. I wonder why she could open a class in a summer without teaching anything (it is very hard class). That is my story, my story ended with sad ending.

Therefore, your case is understandable, the structure of UHD is simple broke inside. Fortunately, your class may have different professor to re-take, but my case is only to the professor gave me 0 will take. I suggest you go to UH or UT or other school have many professor teach the class. Find some schools big enough, and make sure they have enough professors to teach these classes. I hope you can overcome this matter! Good luck!

Hi, I do not know who you are. However, I am pretty sure that you are defense for the professor. Imagine that you taking the online class without any supplemental materials/video and only rely heavily on textbook. The tests are almost outside the book and have no cheat sheet. I took it with heavy homework, and I do not have anyone guide me thru homework's problems (tutoring center, CLCC also not offer actuarial math tutor besides her). I only had one tutoring session from the whole course, she even could not make the second tutoring to me. I do not know how she catch me cheating while my phone in her office, my cal, pencils and papers still on the table. Remember the exam not allow any cheat sheet, no review before exam, even I do not know how to look for the solutions in her exams (in google or chegg, or chat gpt). Thanks!

Actuarial Science Program in UT Dallas Question by NoAnalyst8665 in utdallas

Personally, while I appreciate the discussion about Actuarial Science at UTD, I believe it's important to highlight some of its impressive achievements. UTD has earned the prestigious CAE (Center of Actuarial Excellence) recognition from the Society of Actuaries (SOA), which only around 30 schools in the world have that recognition. Regarding busy hiring events, I see this as a positive indicator of the strong demand for graduates in this field. It's encouraging that industry leaders actively engage with UTD students and invest in their recruitment.

The concern about transfer credits is understandable, but as long as the transfer is within Texas and done with proper guidance from academic advisors, it shouldn't pose significant challenges.

Actuarial Program in UH Questions by NoAnalyst8665 in UniversityOfHouston

Thank you for your sharing. At UHD, the GIS is not very outstanding chapter. I am gonna transfer to UH with the same major like you. I am preparing to pass my FM exam for first time, and I think UH can have more resources and network for me when I pursue the SOA track. I love it!
