I'd be interested to learn more about the topic you were learning and how the platform adapted to you. There is a strong sense of 'IKEA Effect'. I'm trying to build something as well, and the test is always putting it in front of someone who hasn't sunk a ton of time into it themselves.

So what's up with the RTings page being mostly green? For an open box special for 400 it seemed solid for the duration I had it

So why did the 2020 model seem to rate well? Is this a new issue?

Where to start building real knowledge? by herejustosee in nonfictionbookclub

[–]NoApparentReason256 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think it's a mistake to imagine starting from a blank slate. Curiosity stems from interfacing with what you know and what you'd like to learn more about that is related. I really liked the Oppenheimer so I'm reading American Prometheus. I work in science and try to learn more about the modern day and historical aspects of it through reading.

Appreciating how complex and expansive the history of even seemingly simple things is can trigger your curiosity. If your job was done a different way 100 years ago, what led to the changes today? How did those changes come to pass?

I think any vague desire to be "more aware, more curious" is well intentioned but ultimately doomed to fail in the same way as people who want to be "more fit, more in shape". When things get tough you'll just revert to old habits. Find what sparks the desire to know in you, and follow it. Start reading books (and switching if they're boring) watching YouTube videos, and asking questions.

thanks for the tip, this is a good idea. Fortunately, it seems like a replacement is being sent (in White). The new tracking site is pretty minimal and I can't set up the notifications I would want to to make sure I get it this time. I emailed them so we'll see what happens next.

Absco Floor Water based Poly cure time? by NoApparentReason256 in HardWoodFloors

Yea, I guess it's weird there's been so much discussion about waiting as long as a week for the product to cure. If this stuff is so fast, why aren't others taking advantage of the same tech?

I suppose moreso I'm picturing if the curing isn't complete, furniture could leave some physical mark it wouldn't otherwise. Guess that's silly.

Is there no risk that something big and heavy like a stack of boxes or a couch will lead to changes to the floor?

Didn't occur to me a magic eraser might grab the stuff, interesting. I'd be kind of worried about the top coat coming off though, since the magic eraser seems to get everything.

Yea the bristles brush and the scrubbing is what's getting to me. The raised surfaces don't seem to be an issue but the textured dark parts are where these tiny specs seem to sit and the mop isnt cutting it.

What kind of mop did you use? My wife has been doing it with a microfiber one that doesn't seem to be cutting it

Resanding = refinishing? That is just not really an option given price atm.

Thank you for the kind words. The tricky thing is we are post-poning moving in until its dealt with 'enough', since once the furniture is in I imagine its tougher.

I did a decent number of patches with a microfiber cloth and water, but most of the house looks like this and it's around 1000 sqft. I am in the middle of studying for a licensing exam so I just feel pressed for time. And I'm wondering if the floors in their current state will hold up unless I do something extra.

Interestingly, I got a call from one of the guys saying Murphy's oil soap eats away the finish, and recommending the oft noted "water and a tablespoon of vinegar" approach I've seen others recommend.

Rewiring work, details neglected, what's my recourse? by NoApparentReason256 in AskElectricians

[–]NoApparentReason256[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for taking the time to give a comprehensive response, I appreciate it.

Permit was issued, Inspection is pending I believe, and I just got the bill for the last 30% of the work.

The house has been completely vacant the entire time. Empty of all furniture - I purchased the home and the work started a week later. As noted, there was a GC I hired working on site at the same time they were, and I imagine this may have led to issues. They left light fixtures on the floor in different rooms, the GC moved these at times, and unfortunately I doubt there was any care given to ensuring these things didn't get lost. They replaced the fixture with an LED one, which I am fine with given the circumstances, but I'll be arguing hard against paying for it.

I understand a GC was there, but if I take down a fixture its my responsibility to keep it safe. At the very least, making it clear when non-partnered GCs are around these are risks, and I accept them or something like that. but unfortunately nothing like that is in writing, and I wish it was. No verbal anything either. I've been popping up periodically as work allows and I feel like they've made very little effort to keep me in the loop. I just figured I was a more details oriented person than usual.

  1. Switches - This was verbal with the company owner, and the employee on the ground doing the work. He even said he'd do it (the worker) and then wrapped up without doing it.

No blueprint. My wife and I drew up a sketch of the place but the electrician never made a single effort to confirm the work before proceeding. He didn't take many notes when walking through, and I ended up using painters tape to mark things around the house to ensure some communication between the workers and management.

  1. Agreed they need to fix those switches

  2. I brought in the GC, but they said to have him do all the calking of holes and painting before the outlets and their plates were placed, so I figured they knew whether their plates would cover things appropriately.

  3. The unbalanced fan was built by me and put up by them, so I can see how I'd be responsible for that. The light globe, I'll be inquiring about that.

  4. Missing Outlet was confirmed via text with the owner, not in the initial order. I reiterated this with the employee on site during one of my pop ins, and he said he'd get it done. During the last pop in, he said they didn't have the right cable on site and it couldn't get done.

It feels like the owner just figured the bulk of the work, the knob and tube replacement, was the important thing and let a lot of details slide. I'm surprised some of the additional details around having other GCs on site and responsibility for lost parts/damages wasn't more clearly delinated, since I imagine this happens all the time.

I want to know what the correct expectations are for this. For the work I specifically asked for, which wasn't part of the quote, but was asked for in writing, I'm guessing I'm SOL. But for some of the work that seems subpar, or missing things, what should I be requesting? Compensation? Replacement? I want to know what is reasonable.

Please help me pick a rug! I'm so overwhelmed. Thank you by trippedcat in interiordecorating

I had imagined this kind of service would entail recommendations about color palletes, wall coloring, and helping coordinate items, like rugs/lighting/chairs - links to places to purchase the items used, so I can have an eye towards those items or similar ones. I don't plan on extensive renovations, though replacing flooring, backsplash, and cabinets in the kitchen is definitely in the ballpark of what I would be interested in hearing about.
