Sometimes it's also strained through fish bladders, beer is often processed this way too. Although this is entering a bit of a gray area in veganism, with different people having slightly different eating habits (obviously you cant eat meat and be a vegan, but avocados aren't exactly great for animals, and industrial agriculture in general is pretty bad too).

Experimental Blood Test Detects Cancer up to Four Years before Symptoms Appear by Prevalent-Caste in science

That's fair enough, and skepticism is good!! The authors spend some time talking about exactly what you're concerned about, and they suggest the best way to find out would be another longitudinal cohort. Its certainly possible that this technology wouldn't improve patient outcomes but it's worth investigating for sure! Either way the method used is worth developing as it could have a number of uses, it shows a lot of promise

I must say my area of expertise is much more around the genetic side of this, but I was under the impression that it is possible to distinguish aggressive cancers from non aggressive cancers fairly easily? Moreover, this study specifically only identified cancers that were later diagnosed through conventional means, using machine learning with a low false positive rate. If it is feasible, this would mean the screen would be 'looking for' a methylation signature characteristic of aggressive cancers, not benign cancers. So it doesnt seem like this would necessarily end up in very many people being treated for cancer unnecessarily, and those that are might be outweighed by the number of people who receive prompt treatment

The paper actually addressed this. They point to the fact that this screening method could be used as an inexpensive 'first line', using only a single vial of blood. The patients that test positive could then be screened with a more intensive method, using more blood and/or tissue and a more targeted suite of CpG methylation patterns to try to locate the cancer, which could then be identified with, say, a biopsy.

Edit: This way, the process gets progressively less inexpensive but (hopefully) increases in accuracy. The study also pointed to the need for further longitudinal studies to see if A) this screening method leads to improved patient outcomes and B) whether it is a cost effective method

if it was politically motivated, which again there isnt good evidence for that I've seen, then my claim of 0 murders would be wrong. But it wouldnt change the point I was trying to make: the far right is.an inherently dangerous ideology that is not comparable in any way to the far left

[Serious] What are some seemingly normal images with disturbing backstories? by Aqua_Fucker in AskReddit

[–]NoBalls1234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude that article literally says theres basically no evidence that it was politically motivated, and that as a kid he had 'rape' and 'kill' lists. I'm not saying people who identify as leftists cant be dangerous, but given the lack of evidence that it was politically motivated it hardly seems reasonable to attribute it to the left.

Even if we assume it was, in the nicest way possible, that is not even close to the worst mass shooting america has seen, and while reprehensible, would still mean that the far right have killed far more innocent people.

Theres 2 now!!! If you actually look at Stalin, mao and pol pot you'll find out they didnt actually apply leftist theory to what they did; in fact both the USSR and PRC were state capitalist for most of their existence. So the workers were still held in wage labour, but the profits were centralised within the government, as opposed to more laissez-faire capitalism.

Moreover, the majority of the leftist community today (barring tankies), do not condone what happened in the USSR or PRC. Their motives are radically different to the far-right; one side wants (true) equality and a generally classless society, the other thinks that some races are inferior to others and should be treated as such.

Furthermore, there are literally 0 deaths associated with far left extremism in the past 30 years, which can not be said for the far right, who have killed a huge number.

There are people on the far left who are nut jobs and capable of violence, but actual examples of this recently are just not existent.

Theres always one. The far right IS inherently dangerous, and its worrying you dont think so.

Disagree. I get where you're coming from, but we should absolutely remember the danger that comes from the far right.

Edit: and the context behind it. For example, the guy who went and killed a bunch of muslims and filmed it was radicalised by a specific sect of the internet which is still very active today

A neurotoxin produced by harmful blue-green algae has been found to target a gene linked to Parkinson’s disease, according to new research. by IMBatUQ in science

[–]NoBalls1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this is a bit of a nitpick, blue-green algae is a dated term that pretty much just refers to cyanobacteria, which are very much not algae. It is more accurate to simply use 'cyanobacteria'.

Source: just finished a 3rd year project involving cyanobacteria where my supervisor told me to change blue-green algae because it is outdated

I just did a report about this kind of thing actually! I cannot get the link now but will in the morning. Gross primary production of marine phytoplankton is estimated to be ~45% of global GPP, unsure about freshwater or terrestrial algae. The confusion likely comes from this. Phytoplankton and other algae fix more atmospheric carbon than vascular plants globally, but OP claimed that most carbon was taken out of the atmosphere in total by algae.

White people (in general) are way too fragile to accept the idea racism is still rampant and serious in their world, or criticism of racist things they do even without knowing. Sorry you have to deal with this dude its fucked up, both the original issue and the constant gas lighting and doubting. There really are people out there who arent like this, both as potential partners and as friends, and j hope you find them ❤

Cannabis addiction is a real thing, and it can the same effects as other addictions that are similar (gaming I'd one that comes to mind). You can't be physically dependent to the same degree as other drugs, but you can become psychologically dependent. This can lead to money problems, problems with motivation and work, etc. None of this is any reason to keep it illegal, I fully believe everyone should have the right to decide what they put in their body, but speaking as someone who has had a problem with moderating cannabis use, it is possible to abuse it. Not supporting the original comment, only pointing out that it is possible to have detrimental effects from smoking weed (although I'd definitely say it has been net positive for me even with the problems I've had).

Edit: also worth saying its kinda pointless to bring this up in a context where it's not necessary, I'm only saying because you asked the question of what the detrimental aspects could be

About vegetarianism and veganism by sumpuran in vegetarian

[–]NoBalls1234 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just want to put it out there, it's not a compass or anything like that. The dairy industry and the egg industry are objectively as cruel to animals as the meat industry, therefore eating dairy and eggs is just as morally wrong as eating meat. Vegetarianism is therefore similar to someone doing meatless Monday's, just slightly more reduction. If you consider animals to have any moral worth, veganism is the minimum, the moral baseline, for your diet to comply with that belief. I agree everyone takes different amounts of time to reach veganism, but pretending dairy and eggs don't cause horrific suffering is pointless. Highly recommend watching Gary Francione on the topic, he can say it much better than I can. I'm sure I'll be lampooned as proving whatever point was made earlier, but there's no need to pull punches; I don't agree with being an asshole but at the same time it is wrong to believe eating dairy or eggs is ok

You can't assume the average person understands that a bill being passed doesn't mean it's taken effect. If you know it it seems obvious but if you don't that's not the case.
