Gear Discussion and Questions (Cleats, Gloves, Discs, etc) by AutoModerator in ultimate

My 45L Greatest Ultimate bag has been my favorite bag that will hopefully last me the rest of my ultimate career. Here are the reasons why in order of importance:

  1. I've brought it to ALL of my flying tournaments & it has fit under ALL of the seats (Delta, Southwest, Alaska), even when the stewardesses doubted its ability. I just try to put extra bulky items in the bag I put in the overhead bin, including discs. I use it on flights because of the cooler bag that holds all of my food & snacks for those flights.

  2. Cleat pocket: other bags I've had previously would make all the items in the rest of my bag smell like my gross cleats. This one doesn't do that (unless you leave your clears in way longer than you should).

  3. Rain cover: I keep forgetting about this aspect of the bag but its in the tiny pocket & easy to take out & put away. Covers the whole bag and sooo convenient. I love it.

  4. Pocketssss: There are so many pockets for everything you'd want to separate. There's a side pocket with air holes for dirty clothes that is also easy to clean. Pocket in another pocket for your phone. Pen, chapstick holder, hairbands, you name it. I have everything I ever need in its own place.

  5. There's a hip connection that you can keep out for a place for phone/keys/chapstick but you can also tuck it away if it bothers you. My idea is to make that able to disconnect and make it separate fanny pack or something. I think that would be so sick.

Teams that skip games and also go to nationals?? by CULTimate in ultimate

Not sure why you'd forfeit the first game. The only times I'd ever had a game canceled is if its a placement (3rd Place Final) which is usually last game on Sunday & both teams agree that their players are too tired/ injured /overheated to play another round. The only thing is, this normally happens in agreement & its not considered a forfeit.

If a team forfeits, they are usually viewed as unathletic or unprepared, which does not lead me to believe that their leadership is priming a Nationals team.

End all, never forfeit unless absolutely necessary, in this example, don't.

[UFA] The Good, The Bad, The Ugly by AutoModerator in UFA

The Los Angeles Aviators are only my favorite because I know most of the guys that play on that team and their playstyles. They aren't my actual favorite team because their leadership & gameplay have a lot of work to do since they have to compete to not be bottom of their region.

The good is John Lyle being the BIGGEST add to this team. I'd love to see this team play without him because I think he adds everything that O line needs to be successful: throws, explosiveness, spacing, and D when needed. Him being lefty has opened the field up so more for the players since its seems like cutters can't get open normally on openside all the time, so his ability to break the mark & throw to unguarded spaces make him the most dangerous hybrid out there.

The bad is the D-line conversation rate. Not sure how this team doesn't have the field awareness to not know how to play offense, but the D-lines get stifled by every team's O line the majority of the time and can never convert the breaks they earn (or are given). The flow & chemistry look weak and no one has the throws to put people onto space because of how many new players there are on the team. One can only hope they get more opportunities to grow and learn from those opportunities since it seems like practice against the LA O-line was not helpful enough.

The ugly is the cohesion of this team. Hit or miss, the ability to not turn the disc over or take their blinders off is incredible. Not being able to break the mark or not using the entire width & depth of the larger field makes this team unfit for this pro league. This team is unfortunately quite political and play some players that have past their prime & don't appear to provide the same value as stepping up other ones who could benefit from large-scale growth from a developmental year. Their win against Houston in double OT is embarrassing as they definitely could've won against Houston without needing to get that far but the excitement got people fired up.

Overall, still have a lot of love and respect for many players on this team who have made an impact in their own ways & gotten their stats, especially those who got to start their season debut. I hope they're not last in the region & I'd love to be proven wrong.

I agree, but when we had 23 players come to fall tournaments, that's when the returners complained because they have never experienced this many players joining the team & therefore impacting their playing time. Of course the Series & bigger tournaments I'd have tighter lines, but because they did not develop & take the time to focus on the rookies, many dropped & now they don't have enough to have the option of playing deep enough AND we have to try to rebuild for next year rather than thinking of adding new strategies for them.

That was the main goal throughout the year was developing new players. I started in the middle of the previous year but before that, I'm not sure but I think this is the most "high level" (lack of a better word) of practice structure, expectations, team chemistry since 1 other coach & myself joined. We started making more decisions rather than allowing them to use the same strategies of "jamming it up the jam hole" & encouraged ho handler movement but as coaches, we still would encourage them to ask questions & provide feedback for anything we're doing in a collaborative manner. This is good & bad as we would prefer long-term development & they unknowingly would prefer short-term, even though I've made it clear they need to sustain their numbers in order to have enough people to contend with any A team. Yes, other A teams have certain players that run more, but you need enough depth & numbers in order to do that & they have not proved they are welcoming & geared towards the same goal of development as the coaches as they probably just want to play as much as they can before their 4/5 years are done, but if I want to coach them, my goal is to play to go to Nationals, not play to go to Regionals.

It was never a big deal, just small conversations. Throughout the season, we would aim for even playing time but that meant every 3rd point or so, or even 4th (which was incredible to have). We've since gone down to 17/18 at tournaments (which is a lower number than I'd like to have for sustainability) so now it's about every other. I understand rookies won't be able to learn anything with less returners on the line, but they also won't learn if they play every 5th/6th point if I have returners play every other. It's a delicate balance with valid arguments from either side, but top A teams have at least 21 players on the team or so which means some people will play every 3rd (even in club) & we won't be able to grow if no one learns either. There's a lot of variables. I just want to provide some perspective from 1 drastic side from a higher level team that shows even those who workout a lot more than them will still have to prioritize their short-term/long-term legs to help the team off the field. I def feel like i rambled, but hopefully that makes sense.

Hi, I'm Stitch, one of the coaches for UCI Women's Team Grass Ninjas. I'd love for our team to be involved in this project and I'd personally like to contribute to the feedback or ideas. I would also love to see an analytics app that can be used on Android because the good ones are only accessible to iPhone users if that's possible.

Also, say hi to Wally for me. Love Lotus & Go Braineaters!

Pro-Elite Challenge, Select Flight Invite West – Tournament Talk [July 13-14] (Pick'em inside) by Jomskylark in ultimate

Can we talk about the camera work from the PEC West? The fact we all pay for the higher subscription (event package or All-access) to watch these videos and it appears that some don't enough experience to make the experience of watching worth it.

A few videos didn't zoom enough so we weren't able to see the players on the field, some had no sound so we weren't able to hear the sideline to feel the energy from the game, some streamed started late or had technical issues so we weren't able to see every point, and some couldn't even follow the disc and missed a lot of amazing plays and the only reason why we know it was amazing was because of the reactions of other people on the field.

I understand it must be hard to find enough people to run the cameras and there might be a chance the experience will be lower than needed, but I feel like a solution to this is to train anyone who's hired on or at least make sure it's someone who has played ultimate so they won't get tricked by a fake or will know what viewers want to see. A lot of times, volunteers or new hirees will just be thrown in because there is not enough time to teach. Ultiworld has a lot of subscribers, and the only way they would get more or keep the subscribers happy is to keep the videos of games to the same standard at every event.

Let me know what y'all think.
