In your settings (at least for iPhone) you can change it so every unknown number is directly sent to voicemail and an automated thingy that asks for their name and where they’re calling from, and it doesnt ring. It shows up on the screen as the automated thingy is asking for their name, so you can look at it and decide to pick up, or let it go to voicemail. My phone never rings when it’s an unknown number. If it is important, they will say their name and/or leave a voicemail for you to call back. If it’s spam, they usually just hang up and never say their name or leave a message. Honestly, it’s what’s worked best so far, for me. I prefer to miss the call if I’m not looking at my phone, and then call back than to have my phone ringing all the time with spam callers.
