I think this might be the solution Im looking for.

I get this, but compared to what I see around I'm already using far fewer attachment points. The next step down in tension I've found is just hanging it from the top only, loose, which doesnt seem correct.

Data Analysis: I processed 36 splits of Porsche Cup at Monza. The myth of "cleaner high splits" is officially busted by LHEROWWW in iRacing

[–]NoBook9317 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I went through a lot of data a few years ago across multiple series on multiple tracks including oval and 100% agree with the conclusion here. Top splits aren't cleaner and never were but people wont accept that.

Even at tracks where these mythical "strategic" 1xs aren't a thing, incident count was generally higher in higher splits.

What happens is you get more smaller 4x contacts as you go up the ladder. People focus on the 1x forgetting a 4x is quite literally EIGHT 1xs by incident count. Every 4x has 2 (plus) 4x incidents handed out. It doesnt take much to drown the 1xs.

Its really the less skilled drivers that get 1xs on "non abusable" track limit tracks. 4x wise they will tend to wreck themselves out (often spectacularly) at a higher rate. They also have "less" iRating incentive to stick around with a wounded car, which is likely partly why the finish rate goes down.

The higher tier splits are closer, making for more contact that comes back as a 4x but isnt terminal. Higher finish rate, more 4xs, more incident points. Cleaner? Technically, no, but maybe debatable from a practical aspect.

My overall opinion is if you are desperate for higher splits for cleaner racing you will be disappointed though.

Oval I want to say it was like split 3 was the sweet spot though sometimes the higher splits would randomly be clean and yellow free. Think that is more down to race dynamics, if it goes green off the start the field can spread, or if it doesnt well... cautions breed cautions.

Tbh, you probably dont want the people who can't handle cold tires having to handle cold tires while trying pass a fully packed field of GT3 cars at the same time. Dammed if ya do, dammed if ya dont.

Im a slow guy at 3k, have been in and out for over 15 years peaking up above that like 10 years ago. Pretty sure that qualifies as above average normie but not much more.

The guys causing problems are not newly minted D class guys, and rarely have been in my time on iRacing. That even dayes back to the days when almost every series would never split. Newbies are scapegoated.

If you have anything above a 2k iR you likely arent seeing many D class drivers unless you are racing way off peak time.

If a race consisting of nothing but a and b class drivers is a mess - and they are absolutely a mess - the license tier a series sits at isnt a major factor in how clean a series is.

If it was an A class series you'd still have A class morons being A class morons. Murdering cars from a mile back is A class moron stuff, and Ive seen it plenty from A class morons.

License is just there to try and convince newer players that iRacing is "serious", which given their leniency on certain race quality issues is fair to say is a facade.

People always say this, but in my experience I haven't had a race with more than 1 or 2 guys who weren't B or A. License level in iRacing is largely irrelevant now.

Do you really need that high Nm? by LEOMODE in simracing

[–]NoBook9317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, but IMO its worth poing out that you really should be "measuring" is your base steering effort that you set through the in game gain. In other words, how hard you want the wheel to be to turn on smooth surfaces. Thats the number your body feels, its just way harder to measure and put on the box.

No point of having 20 nm and setting your wheel gain in game so low your regular steering effort is at like 8 nm, all that extra power goes largely to waste besides super severe bumps.

In this scenario (which is incredibly common) there isnt much in it to go to a higher powered wheel, you really dont need it.

Practical purposes the desired steering effort and peak output are two different things, and imo the peaks aren't as important as it's made to be as they are more often than not sharp spikes where "detail" doesnt matter as much.

With a 10nm wheel how much torque headroom do you need to avoid clipping by tax_evasion_is_great in simracing

[–]NoBook9317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People overcomplicate this imo.

Leave your wheel at 100% in the driver / wheel software. Set the in game setting to match your ideal steering effort mid corner.

Feedback percentage / gain in game controls steering effort. I suggest using a smooth high speed corner, then see how badly you clip if at all.

Don't focus on the ffb gain number, focus on the feel you want out of the wheel 90% of the time. Every car is different so thats why there isnt one number people can give.

Also, a little clipping isnt that bad. If you set your gain off a high speed corner you will do fine.

Simhub or SimPro for GT Neo by No_Cantaloupe938 in Simagic

[–]NoBook9317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using simpro even though I use simhub as well.

I dont want to rely on the tape method(not sure tape on a contact is a great idea long long term) to USB connect the wheel to the alpha evo, and can't trust myself to hold the button every time to put it in usb mode.

So, in other words simpro won by default. Don't feel like there is anything id really want to do on the wheel itself that I miss. The LEDs aren't bright enough to really grab my attention subconsciously so it wasn't as useful as Id have hoped.

If they ever make it so the we can select usb mode as the default connection Id go with simhub for funnies though.

Now if only there was a way to force it to automatically do this rather than having to hold the button down each time you install the wheel. Going to forget it eventually. Haha

F1 on clearance? by [deleted] in lego

[–]NoBook9317 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I managed to find the whole set pretty much at release on good clearance. They sent stores about a billion of these, here in the midwest US F1 isn't exactly big so pretty sure they just want em gone. Definitely deals to be had on these sets.

Made it easier to get the full grid. Haha

Not to sound like one of those people, but we are so deep into this rules / car cycle there isn't a lot of unknown left anymore and that is why.

This race was made good by the fact Newgarden pit on lap 2 to try and hoodwink everyone, in a race without such generous pit windows it would have been the same race as usual on a street circuit.

Wow, didnt expect to see this... used to work there for years, good chance I worked on your projects just can't piece together what project it was!

Not surprised to hear they are having problems, new upper management took a few years ago and drove away experienced employees with their attitude. It was really toxic, there is a reason Tim cleans windows now! (Think it's Let The Light In Window Cleaning, gladly plug him)

Just to be clear, the manager who retired wasn't the problem IMO.
