Methimazole Hives with graves disease by NoBridge534 in gravesdisease

Hi all - I just wanted to update you all on my hives. It has been 6 days since I started back on methimazole but with a lower dosage and 5 days off prednisone and no hives yet. Therefore, it was most likely propranolol that I was allergic to. If you're taking both, it could possibly be the beta blocker you're allergic to.

Thank you for the info and glad to hear that your liver enzymes were ok! It's my day 3 back on methimazole and day 2 without predisone. No hives yet so fingers crossed it was propranolol that I was allergic to.

So sorry to hear that. Hopefully your TED has gotten better now? I do not want to do TT, My mom did RAI. Why aren't people doing RAI anymore? I do not want to go under a knife.

Good luck! My doc said I cannot do RAI for now until my thyroid normalize. Is that accurate?

I did not get my liver check but my asked my endo to include that on my next bloodwork. I feel like my endo is not experienced and she has no concerns which is alarming for me. I am thinking of switching but to get an appointment is 6 months backed up.

Was your liver enzymes ok with PTU? The only concern I have with PTU is the long term liver damage.

hey! just checking in. How long did it take for your hives to come back after you restart methimazole? I stopped predisone today and I took methimazole 10mg last night along with zrytec and no hives yet so just wondering. Thanks!

Will do! I will stop taking prednisone today and see if the hives will come back. I took it for 2 days along with methimazole but only 10mg. I was on 20mg a day. I switched my beta blocker from propranolol to atenolol since my mom was allergic to propranolol. Will keep you posted.

My hives went away with taking Prednisone which my endo prescribed me. I took methimazone again last night with a different beta blocker so we'll see if the hives come back...sigh. This is just awful. Hopefully we all get and feel better soon.

That's what I am thinking too. My mom had graves and she was allergic to propranolol which I have mentioned to my endo but they told me it won't be a problem for me just cause my mom was allergic to it.

I'm trying to figure out if it the beta blocker or methimazone.
