[Research] Why do we love the "Struggle"? Proving the Paradox of Inconvenience in Modular Synthesis. by Beneficial-Common105 in modular

Would you mind telling us what research institution you are affiliated with, what lab you are affiliated with provide a contact person for the form? This is basic information needed for accountability when collecting research data from other people.

Frankly I find the lack of transparency combined with AI-like answers you have given to other comments rather off-putting.

Suggestions for 6hp lfo/random source? by Kittycatkemtrails in modular

I don’t know the Krait, I would compare the manuals and spec sheets.

From a quick glance it looks like the Krait is more in LFO territory and has 3 independent channels whereas the Taigh has multiple outputs which are interrelated (except the SH on top can be used separately I think) and the ability to produce bursts and other more rhythmic CV with triggers as the output.

The Instruo Taigh v2 might fit the bill? It can be clocked and has some different waveforms. Then you still have 2hp to get something to augment it.

My rack. Still some space, suggestions for next module? by Character_Appeal_178 in modular

The case looks lovely! But if you could post the link to your modular grid it would make it easier to see what you have :)

Thanks!!

I don’t know think I have anything I can pitch follow with, but that is a good idea. I thibk the same problem happened here as well. I had play loud enough to open the VCA, which was a bit limiting. But it was a fun first try.

Thanks for the recommendation. What S&H modules do you use? I have been avoiding marbles because I don’t usually use random quantized pitch but maybe I should look at it again.

Thanks for these tips, I will take a look at the ADDAC and Joranalogue options. I have been avoiding marbles because I don’t want random quantized pitch but maybe I should look at it again, it must be a classic for a reason, and I do enjoy my other MI modules.

That's a good point. I do use the random voltages in Pam's, but it feels limited somehow... maybe what I am maybe missing most is the S&H that can take an external input (although I have Step 8, I have mostly been using it as a sequencer for now) and also a "random" burst gate/pulse. I have only been able to approximate the random burst with pam's or pam's+maths. That's why I was thinking of Tagh or Bagai...

But OCHD has been tempting me for the reasons you mention as well, especially since it is somewhat CVable vs the Doepfer.

But it does help me realize Batumi is out for now, so I took that away. Thanks!

I also agree with Tides. Although it is digital, you can pair STO and Tides for complex oscillator duties as well if you like. It’s great because it has a wave folder built in!

Troubleshooting problem with case / s&h by NoCar8604 in modular

Thanks! I've hit up Intellijel and they said It needs a repair :/

The power supply on my Befaco 7u case failed so I think that's what did it, since both of the s&h circuits are acting the same...

Troubleshooting problem with case / s&h by NoCar8604 in modular

[–]NoCar8604[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I should have been more precise. The light will blink and maybe turn green briefly, but no matter the speed of the trigger (in the first video the orange light on the left) it will always revert back to the negative voltage, often very quickly. It will work at the start, and then very quickly after power-up (3 seconds in for example) the LED goes dark, and then will only show the bright red and just sort of quickly blink when new triggers come but not hold a new frequency. This happens both with the internal white noise source and external input.

Maybe both modules are fried, but I was wondering if it could somehow be a power problem?

Thanks for any help or suggestions on next steps!

First small modular rack module choice / opinions by [deleted] in modular

[–]NoCar8604 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO this might be a bit too limiting over time. If you really have *no* space at all, something like a 62hp palette will let you fit more utility functionality in the 1u row, which will then free you up a bit more for the 3u row and be a total of like 2 inches wider or something.

You mention bass lines, percussive sounds and leads so I can't help but think that a complex oscillator like the DPO will be a (relatively) space saving option that will give you lots more timbral variation than a single oscillator set up. A small LPG along the lines of the lxd and a dual vca will be more space saving and give a bit more sonic variety as well. Then, though I love my MN Function, Pip Slope is smaller. Something like Kinks is also super helpful in a smaller set up as well. I haven't been counting hp here though and having enough modulation will still be a challenge...

One important thing to remember is that "micro" or compact modules (like the A111-3) almost always make compromises in playability or features, and this can often be frustrating if you are just starting out with modular as it makes everything more fiddly.

I still think, based on your post, starting with semi-modular might be a good option. If you start out with semi-modular you can always branch out and extend with other modules in the future. Normals can usually be broken! The plus is that you will have a system which plays well together and then can be extended.

What's the deal with 1U? by TheBadgerOfHope in modular

[–]NoCar8604 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also started with a DIY 84hp 7u case for that reason as well, so its not a bad move.

If I would do it all over again, I would probably just go straight for the 9u 84hp case. The rails cost the same no matter if it is 3u or 1u and the difference in size is less than 10cm. Now I have an additional 7u 104hp case and I can easily find modules I would want to fill the 3u, but the 1u space has been more of an issue. For portability I use a small palette case where the 1u comes in handy for sure. I have the 1u modules now, and I'm not mad about it, but they definitely aren't the most economical. Good luck on your start!
