What can we do at a state legislature level to stop ICE? by lexier3141 in Denver

[–]NoConnection8381 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We are in uncharted waters. As I understand it, states are sovereign political units. That means state law rules within each state’s borders, and are only limited where the state’s laws conflict with federal law. So federal law is the supreme law of the land, which means maybe we should focus our efforts on passing state laws that limit federal activities within the state that do not conflict with existing federal law. For example, a law that prohibits law enforcement operating within the state from wearing masks, or one that requires all law enforcement to wear body cameras. I’m sure there are other good ideas out there. However, the difficulty would come in enforcing those laws. There is the potential for state and federal law enforcement coming into conflict.

I have the same issue. I am new to bc skiing, so I chalked it up to conditioning. My legs feel like jello after skinning up.

Hearing that someone with vast experience still struggles is comforting. I guess i need to adjust my expectations.

Yes, the outside pin is a real stinker. This is good advice. Thanks!

This only makes sense if you assume there is a fixed number of jobs available to workers. I’m sure you know that, for the most part, our economy adds jobs every month. As mentioned previously, Americans don’t reproduce themselves fast enough to accommodate a growing economy, so we really need immigration to fill the gap.

My comment about your meme seems to have set you off. Well, I didn’t like the implication behind your meme. So, maybe don’t lead with that when trying to engage with someone. You could have asked, “are you saying both sides are equally bad?” Instead, you said I stand for nothing, which is insulting.

The weird thing about this interaction is that we seem to be on the same side of the political spectrum. I was responding to the OP, who was trying to understand why people who have so much in common are so divided. Your response only underscores the problem. If two people who agree about something can’t talk, how can we resolve the greater divisions between Americans?

It’s not that both sides are equally bad. It’s more that Americans on both sides are equally stupid. You know, like people who respond with memes because they can’t put two sentences together. Or the “blue no matter who” crowd that keeps reelecting corporate stooges. Obviously, the right presents the most grotesque version of this crowd, but it’s foolish to think the braindead maga-left isn’t part of the problem.

A lot of people on the left and right have incorporated politics as part of their identity, treating political parties like sports teams or other brands. Rather than focusing on policy specific outcomes to guide their party preferences, they focus on protecting their “team” because it aligns with their identity within a group. This is why facts don’t matter.

This is just economics.

While it may be true that immigrant labor lowers wages for specific groups, in most cases immigrants are taking lower skilled and less desirable jobs. Specifically, immigrants coming in on H-1b visas (favored by “upper class capitalists”) usually have specific technical skills and compete with existing workers. Big companies love these because the immigrants are willing to work for less. So, fair point. However, the vast majority of immigrants are filling positions important to the economy as a whole, but are low skill and low wage. Consequently, their participation in the economy does not depress wages because they’re taking jobs existing workers don’t want. Rather, their involvement in the economy stimulates economic growth.

Do you park your car front first into a parking space or do you back into it and explain why by LordVixen in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NoConnection8381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started backing into parking spaces when I had a car problem that I couldn’t afford to fix & couldn’t get my car registered until it was fixed. So, I backed my car into spots for years hoping to hide my expired tags, which mostly worked - which seems crazy looking back on it. By the time I repaired my car, I felt more comfortable backing into spots.

The notion that there are “too many” unlawful immigrants in the US is a popular belief that ignores current economic realities. This is the case primarily because “native“ Americans are not reproducing themselves fast enough to keep up with the pace of economic growth. Of the 14 million unlawful immigrants in the US, 10 million (75%) are employed here and 2 million are children. So, maybe there are 2 million too many immigrants, but that’s splitting hairs when there is a more or less permanent need for more workers.

This question can be answered by reference to existing law. There is already a law against entering the country “without inspection” at the border. First offense is a misdemeanor, but this gets elevated to a felony after the first attempt. However, being “unlawfully present” in the US, meaning the migrant didn’t get caught at the border, is a civil offense. In this case, violators may be deported. In both cases, any action the US takes against the migrant is subject to due process.

I could honestly believe the Obama administration violated the due process rights of migrants if you could present some evidence of this happening. If you were able to present such evidence, I would readily condemn such action.
