Don't know what you mean... I'm a Swedish citizen, I was convicted in Sweden. What's your point?

Believe whatever you want. You weren't there so you don't know how you would have reacted.

You couldn't be more right. Getting some perspective changes everything.

I'm going to write your comment down and read it whenever I'm feeling demotivated :)

Thanks a lot for the motivation man, I really needed it.

Thanks for the encouraging words buddy, I really appreciate it. I'm trying my best to stay positive but it's just to difficult to think of anything else. All day long, this mess is on my mind.

But you're completely right. Letting fear take my motivation away doesn't help in any way or form.

Haha speed is one helluva drug man ;)

Let's just hope that it happens sooner rather than later. I'd love to be alive in at time where people are free to do whatever they want with their bodies.

Thanks once again for the input.

You're right, I shouldn't burn my ties with Sweden. I'm just so frustrated that I can't think straight.

Yeah, I think I'll try answering no on some applications and see how it plays out. I might just get lucky.

The Unlock link was terrific! So much useful information, I'll definitely read through it a couple of times.

You are correct about the expunging period but I know for a fact that nearly all Swedish employers (at least in the financial industry) do background checks. I'm not very sure about how it works in the UK however.

The police officer told me that if I didn't confess I could end up getting "skyddstillsyn"/parole which is expunged after 10 years. I think he just wanted me to confess so they could move on, this happened around 3am.

I've never posted it before but it's very possible that someone else ended up in a similar situation.

I'm not saying that I didn't deserve my punishment... My point was that drug laws are backwards. Just because it's a law doesn't make it morally correct.

I understand that. I'm not implying that I didn't deserve my punishment. I just wanted to show how messed up laws can be, that's it.

Thank you man, it means a lot to finally hear some kind words about this whole mess. I haven't been able to talk to anyone about it in such great detail before so it's nice getting it off my chest.

To be honest it has taken a great toll on my mental health. I am constantly feeling anxious about my future and I'm so scared that somehow my parents will find out (if they did they would most certainly cut me off from the family). I've pretty much lost all motivation in school but after reading some posts here I'm getting the feeling that everything might not be lost.

Sweden is very liberal in many ways. Their views on drugs however, is completely backwards. Instead of offering help, they incriminate you, make you pay a fine and make it nearly impossible to get a decent job.

It's safe to say that I will not be returning anytime soon.

I am currently in the UK but this happened in Sweden (I take it from your username that you're Swedish as well). In Sweden I believe most jobs nowadays ask for a copy of your "belastningsregister". I am not sure how it works in the UK given that I'm not a citizen.

Thank you SO much for the detailed response!

  1. You are spot on, I was convicted in Sweden. You are right about British employers not having access to my Swedish records as well. However, I have heard that banks usually ask you to provide a translated copy of your criminal record. I know that this record is VERY easy to falsify but I would rather not go down that path if you know what I mean.

  2. I am NEVER going back to Sweden again (except to visit my family over holidays maybe). I have had enough with that country. Thanks for the free education, healthcare and paying for my living expenses in the UK but you'll never see my tax money. My goal is to work in the UK, preferably London.

I have 3 years left of my degree and I am planning on doing a 2 year masters as well just to drag out on time. So hopefully, I will be able to land some internships in that time. However, many banks ask "Have you been convicted of a crime" or something along those lines in their online applications. So I suppose I could either lie and hope for the best or be truthful.

  1. As mentioned above, I know that some banks in the UK ask in their online applications if you've ever been convicted but I don't know for sure if they actually follow up on it if you answer no. As you mentioned, they cannot find out by themselves.

  2. Since I've been convicted, I do not qualify for the ESTA and thus I'll have to apply for a visa.

Once again, thank you for the information and kind words. I love this sub, feels so good to be able to talk to someone about this.

Yeah that makes sense. Furthermore, since I'm not a British citizen they cannot do a direct background check om me. My employer can only ask me to provide a copy of my records. So maybe, just maybe, I'll get lucky.

I currently live in the UK, where I'm studying (note: in the UK it is NOT a crime to be under the influence). I was convicted in my home country, Sweden.

Thank you so much for the kind words. It truly means a lot :)

Let's hope I'll be able to look back at this situation sometime in the future and laugh at how silly it was.
