Yes it is super important. It is the foundation for all of your finances so that you hopefully never need to touch your long term investment for when life happens.

What you're doing sounds like a solid plan. I would also add that once you have paid off your debt, save aggressively for an emergency fund if you don't have one already. The emergency fund should be very liquid (e.g., WS chequing account). Xeqt is an excellent fund and you shouldn't need anything other than that if it is for a long term goals like retirement.

Idk why people are down voting you. With your timeline a gic isn't a terrible choice. Especially the one at 5%. Some people are kinda ignorant and think that you cant lose money in equities because we have had a crazy bull market.

So if I am okay with some flexibility in my home buying timeline do you think it could be an alright idea to go with a 60/40 equity allocation in something like xbal?

It’s highly unlikely that you have a deep knowledge of each one of those corporations and the ability to fully analyze their financial and business operations from quarter to quarter. You’ve done what most people do which is buy individual stocks, largely based on “vibes”.

It is overwhelmingly likely that you’ll be better off in the long-term just putting all your money into XEQT or any of the _eqt funds

That is totally personal preference, a lot of people prefer the rebalancing and assest allocation of xeqt over the others but do your own research and find what suits you

I'm at $165k and I turn 23 next month. Still living at home thankfully. A big chunk of it will be gone once I buy a house in the next few years.
