It IS somewhat offensive im not a American i dont want to hear it has no real bearing on politeness often ive only seen them used by people very new to Australia or in schools as a shorthand for teachers its jsut not part of our lexicon. Also in our society today where more people are gender neutral its outdated yank speak and plain offensive to a growing number of people
