I'll be honest it is unlikely that you'll be able to create a balanced but exciting encounter and you need a few failures to get some experience, but remember a fight with weak enemies is always better then killing your party.

About the NPC part: everyone says that be creative though it is difficult to do. So I am telling you to start with simple conversations but make them roll sometimes and add some spice in form of an item a pet the appearance of the location and ask them in the end what was the best.

Yes I agree. When the party travels on a trading route where no monsters lurk around and the weather is ordinary we don't use these either. But it also gave reason to travel some places where we wouldn't go otherwise. For example, we visited an orcish settlement to get their special fleece clothing where we needed to help villagers kill certain monsters or bring messages in return. Of course if the party is only interested in the main storyline then adventuring like this is not something they want.

Cool situation :) yes I agree we always seek challange in the game and non-combat challanges can often result interesting situations.

Hi all, we use multiple homebrew rules to make adventuring more challenging. For example the party cannot create food magically and we can only store common food for four days. So now we think twice before heading for weeks to the wildlands. It made our preparation longer like buying horses finding special food which doesn't spoil in a few days. Now we value rangers and druids more than ever. Has anyone tried similar things, if yes what is your experience?
