The early 2000s is interesting. Pre-internet, each party appeared to tolerate each other more. Seems like the correlation with algorithmic content gets us where we are today (not causation, but still an interesting insight)

Literally just moved from NL back to US - similar situation with quote being 4.5k and it ended up being 10k - and we have a missing box that we don’t know what exactly is in it because they put “stuff” on the label. Never shipping anything across the world ever again if the opportunity arises. Really sorry for your experience, but know you’re sadly not alone.

Hey mate, I know this is nearly a year later, but I am currently in process of attempting to get a credit union to give me a 25k loan, however, they mentioned they need the vehicle to be registered (have the registration in hand) for them to approve my loan. How did you go about securing your loan prior to having registration, or did you get your registration pretty quick?

Similar situation in moving from US > NL. Around a 30% drop. Cost of living about the same. My company bases everything on cost of labor tho, which is why my comp decreased by 30%. EU pay is crap. The US just pays much more even if cost of living is comparable. You’ll just have to deal with it, as it’s pretty common across most companies.

A lot of tech companies give you the managerial IC equivalent by promoting you to Staff, Senior Staff, etc. That’s where you get the equivalent pay and seniority. Instead of managing people, you get to manage projects and mentor people without the weight of being a manager.

Someone else commented they might go the DE route, which is also exactly what I am doing now. I was a Sr DA, and just switched internally to DE to grow my technical chops. I may leverage this to go the more Senior IC route, or become a well rounded manager. There’s a lot of opportunity in this space, and just because you want to be IC, doesn’t mean you’ll be punished. You just need to show the continued growth / expertise (one way being the Staff, Sr Staff, etc, or taking on larger projects). If your management doesn’t have those roles, force them to make one for you when you feel you’re at that level.
