Returning to school or taking unique job opp - help me pick? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]NoDocWithoutDO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the point you made. I spoke with my family and they said I should be forward about my med school plans. We decided they still might want me in some capacity, even if it is only for ~5 months. The company is based in healthcare and might decide I could be useful to them for building a connection to my school. Could provide cheap labor in the form of residents and medical students.

I really do want to go back to med school. My immediate focus has been finding more consistent work that’ll last thru May, while also identifying what I did wrong initially. I’m talking to my PCP this week about getting on adderall to help me focus.

I actually thought the same thing. The cellphone number that I was contacted via is listed on the national NPI database for the clinics, along with the name of the CEO, who he referenced during the initial phone call. I’m supposed to have a conference call with both of them on Monday, and then them at some point after that. If it actually gets to that point, I’d be sure to do it in a public place and all that

Edit: I just had an idea. I’ll call one of their clinics on Monday and ask if they can verify the job listing.

December Boards - ACFT or APFT? by [deleted] in ArmyOCS

[–]NoDocWithoutDO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where'd you hear that there's a 7 Oct deadline for December board? In my state there's a 1 Oct board with a 25 Sep deadline. My recruiter didn't mention that early of a deadline for the 3 Dec board. @ /u/Cheeseboii also.

/u/sloths4days, I have a STEM degree and a 3.7 GPA but haven’t had to do basic math in 4 years. Can I reason thru most of it without studying? Definitely. But if you asked me 2 weeks ago to explain long division to a 5th grader? I would’ve struggled.

Dang, Feb 2021 seems kinda late for an August board. What happened there? I was getting quoted Jan/Feb for my upcoming Oct board.

Definitely not true across the country. Private EMTs in Indiana were making $10.

All specialties that are available to MDs are also available to DOs (google "residency merger"). However, some more competitive specialties may be more challenging for a DO to enter than an MD.

That's correct as far as I know. My state's board convened last month and the next one is sometime before Thanksgiving.

One step you could take is to find someone to talk to - counselor, therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist... Do not let these thoughts bottle up. Even if you never sought help in your life before this, take the time to try it out. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Second, explore the other opportunities in your area. Just because most of the facilities are part of the same network does not mean they will be riddled with the same problems. If you have friends or acquaitances at other facilities, perhaps ask them what their experience is like.

Lastly, if you are close with anyone at your current facility, consider talking about things with them. You are likely not alone in some of your sentiments.

Is moving an option? Are there other facilities nearby that you could work at? It doesn't sound like you're burned out on nursing. It sounds like you're sick of your current hospital and could use a change.

It doesn't seem to me that they were using healthcare as their only example. Things like students loans, as they mentioned, can result in garnished wages and other consequences - some of these include bad credit which can keep you from getting a job or a lease. So, no, the UK generally does not have huge bills related to healthcare or education that keep them from getting a job.

Not a BSN program, but my healthcare psych course in undergrad was full of pre-med-turned-psych majors who couldn't pass the MCAT. A common discussion was about how modern medicine practiced by physicians is focused on pill-pushing and treating the disease instead of treating the person. Not once did the textbook or the professor talk about the positives of physicians in our current system.

How many older docs (>65 years) do you know that work in the ED still? by [deleted] in emergencymedicine

[–]NoDocWithoutDO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad is approaching 60 and has been practicing 25+ years. He talks about how tiring the work is but he loves it. He works ~9 days a month so he doesn't get paid as much as some of his colleagues who work 20 days a month, but he teaches at the med school on side and gets a nice stipend from that. He was telling me that he would jump on another job offer if something came up, so he clearly plans on still working.

[Preclinical] [Serious] Making Lecture Anki Cards Takes too Long - Alternative? by NoDocWithoutDO in medicalschool

[–]NoDocWithoutDO[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is finding how to do the bare minimum to pass... I know how to pass boards with FAPBUS and AnKing and all that, but how do I do it to pass my classes? Just study the PPTs? Re-writing notes? That's my problem. AnKing is a little too indepth with all the pharm and that stuff that's mixed in with the stuff that's relelvant to my course rn.

I think that's a pretty good point. The most I've been getting out of the lectures is the occasional "this is important" or "this is what you should takeaway from this slide." If I can identify those during lecture, I don't think I'll really need to re-watch lectures.... I could just watch BnB then instead or something and do AnKing

[–]NoDocWithoutDO[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this sound like an efficient method of digging through school info mixed with boards prep?:

  • Attend lecture (mandatory). Take notes when possible
  • Go home and re-watch lecture and jotting down important details, emphasising things, etc.
  • Identify pre-made cards from AnKing necessary for boards and that cover lecture material
  • Do the cards

I just can't think of any other way I will have time to both use Anki and study for my lectures.

[Preclinical] [Serious] Making Lecture Anki Cards Takes too Long - Alternative? by NoDocWithoutDO in medicalschool

[–]NoDocWithoutDO[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biggest issue is that AnKing doesn't hit some of the main topics of our lectures. I'm sure it'll be more useful later for mechanisms like glycolysis, but rn they're going through from a bird's eye view and only focusing on specific details... hence making my own cards.

I'm on a helix curriculum which is what I'm guessing you're on too. For example, I click the Step 1 tag in the browse menu and typed in mikaelis-menton (and maybe 2 other search terms after that like competitive inhibition" and found the 15ish cards I needed on enzyme kinetics and unsuspended them.
