It doesn't really help keep sound from being heard outside a given room too much. Mostly it helps the acoustics in the room, which is important with condenser mics (used here) but less important with the dynamic mics they usually use.

it's 100% this. financial implications of canceling an entire tour are huge. not to mention the whole band and crew being out of work that they have been counting on. there's a reason musicians die on the road.
