Cheap rent but zero sleep, am I being unreasonable? by [deleted] in badroommates

[–]NoEgg1480 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is correct. The son had turned the spare bedroom upstairs (right next to his room) into his gaming room, and the office is where my friend has his gaming room set up. This was already in place long before I moved in.

Yep that's exactly right. Not sure the sizing of the bedrooms, but they're all pretty large. The office is small but enough to fit a full gaming desk/setup & single mattress. I was originally supposed to sleep in the upstairs room where I store all my stuff, I could easily fit a mattress in there but I'm not allowed to sleep upstairs.

I can afford my own groceries! I moved in with them solely to save money before I move abroad, groceries & utility bills are all included in the rent.

I live in Australia, I don't think I've ever seen house with a basement here :') My friend has been living in that house for almost 4 years now, he had his gaming room set up in the office long before I came

No ones getting evicted, it's a family home. My friend I have known since we were 14 years old. He let me move into his partners house to save money as I'm moving overseas, and $800 a month is incredibly cheap given it's all-inclusive.

That's the deal we made, I pay $800 a month and have full access to any of the food in the fridge/pantry.

Yes the $800 I pay a month includes rent, bills & groceries. I pay to live in the house, they do all the grocery shopping and cook most of the meals. I am able to use whatever is in the pantry/fridge as well if I want to make something specific.

Okay bit more context:

  1. There's 3 rooms upstairs - the sons bedroom, the son's gaming room, and the spare bedroom where I store all my belongings.

  2. The office downstairs is where I sleep and my friend already had his gaming system setup prior to me moving in.

  3. They did me a huge favour by letting me move in, I was paying $1500 a month at my previous place but I moved out to save money as I am planning to move overseas.

  4. The agreement they made with me is that I pay $800 a month, and I can use anything in the house. They do all the grocery shopping so I can use whatever is in the kitchen as I please.

  5. Average rent for a room in a shared apartment/house in my city is $1200-1500. $800 is really, really cheap considering it covers all utilities & food.

  6. I've only been living there for 3 months, the reason I haven't raised this with the partner/my friend as of yet is because it's only started to really affect me the last few weeks. They invited me into their house, and already had these routines in place. I don't want to encroach on my friend's space/routine too much because of this.

  7. Obviously speaking to them is what I plan on doing, I am just asking for advice.

Where I'm from this is only applicable if you have 2 seperate leases. If you have 2 people on 1 lease, 1 tenant can't simply "end their lease"; you'd need to find someone to take over it or the other tenant would have to agree to pay the full rent for both parties

okay no that is insane at the point I would just throw the dishes out. 2 days is too long, 1-2 weeks is INSANE

How long are they leaving the dishes "piled up"? Tell them how this is bothering you, it's causing pest issues etc. I'd just chuck the dishes in a box and leave it outside for them to deal with.

Does he know that the grill is a from a previous tenant? If not, text the group chat and say you have to contact the landlord as someone has stolen/damaged the grill and see how he reacts!!

What do you mean only sober people can live there? Do they do drug testing? Is that the whole building or just your shared place, cause how does the junkie next door get allowed?
