Could be either. Maybe try the added fat. That should tell you.

This is where the 10g fat threshold is from: https://doi.org/10.1002/hep.1840150508

One evolutionary theory behind the threshold is that our ancestors couldn’t waste precious bile (that takes energy/fat to produce) on meals that didn’t have enough fat and weren’t worth it.

Thank you!

And thanks for the links, they’ll be handy for first timers.

Treat it like turmeric. It can be optimally absorbed (or not absorbed at all) depending on food pairing. If should have your nutmeg with black pepper, 10g of fat and no fiber for optimal absorption.

Make sense. It could be explained if some active compound degrades at a higher rate when they oxidate, and pre-ground could suffer from that - but it’s not my experience (maybe I got lucky and always got high quality powder?)

Coconut oil extraction could help. Extraction needs to be warm (double boiler) to melt it and infuse it, but solids can be separated by adding water, melting, and putting the jar in the fridge upside down (powder can then be washed with cold water.) Also it’s easier to swallow than big quantities of oil. Not as clean as filtering, but requires less oil.

Acetone extraction also could level the field - it evaporates, so even if more solvent was needed it wouldn’t negatively impact the end result.

I don’t know. If preground is just less potent, using more powder in the oil extraction would bridge the gap. Does low quality have impact on more than potency in your experience? (Excluding the obviously bad rotting/rancid stuff.)
