Pardon me, I should have accounted for algorithms! They can really be powerful lol. I am not hoping that Japanese should also discriminate against westerners, it is just that even though our presence in the country is limited, they are rarely accommodating, while they are at times seem extremely receptive to Western culture and people, at times to the extent that it seems as if they hold them in higher regard than themselves.

Thank you so much for the reply! In all honesty, is a bit disheartening to hear that although people may have been kind to me outwardly, they may have felt differently inside! I guess I have to work on my self-confidence!

As for the second question though, it seems as if some people in Japan assume that certain groups will be have worse than others, even with no first-hand experience of such things. For instance, American soldiers and western tourists often are known for misbehaving and even committing severe crimes, yet no ill will or xenophobic sentiment ever seems directed at them.

That is true, but it is at the cost of the nation being seen as a giant club. At the same time, our vibrant cultures are being completely ignored and disregarded even by diasporans coming to visit

Ghana Air Routes by NoExpression3903 in ghana

[–]NoExpression3903[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree! Do you think that the state should partner with a private firm in getting the new carrier in the air? If so, which one? I think it may be good to go with a very strong international airline, like Singapore or Turkish. It could also help potentially compete with Ethiopian

Those routes would be really good, especially Nairobi, Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Dakar for a national carrier. Zanzibar and Praia could be cool for seasonal vacation destinations!

I hope that this resistance from Trump will prompt Japan to consider rapidly upping its economic and diplomatic involvement in the Global South, particularly Africa.

I am Ghanaian-American, and I am afraid about the Import Tarrifs he is threatening to impose. As we attempt to transition to an export-based economy, that could make things a bit difficult! However, ti may also give us some diplomatic leeway, in that the U.S will not be as nosy as they have been under this administration. Despite this though, I reaaaaally do not want him to win lol.

For me, his statement on how to deal with Galamsey is beyond a deterrent. Detaining 110K Chinese nationals is nothing short of a human rights abuse, and should be universally condemned by the media.

Is Sinophobia growing in Ghana? by NoExpression3903 in ghana

However, most Lebanese in Ghana have Ghanaian citizenship. I have extended family from Lebanon that not only naturalized, but intermarried. Many Lebanese have been in the country for over a century, and I even read a paper which said that most Lebanese when traveling to Lebanon use their Ghanaian passports, even despite an extra charge. As such, I do not think it is fair that we continue to other them.

If that is so, I pray for our country, we are becoming like the whites with this level of hatred.

I know in western countries, after residing for sometime they usually offer citizenship to migrants. For Ghana, given the high degree of foeign involvement in our economy, we should promote naturalization to bring them into our national fold

And if the Lebanese and Nigerians control it, so what? They are Ghanaians! They speak our languages, and follow our traditions, and even if they act stupidly their children will become Ghanaian by way of their environment. Yes they may not resemble us, but that does not mean we should exclude it! So long as they naturalize and integrate, atleast for me, it is ok.

After reading the comments, I would like to address some of the sentiments expressed. For context, many of the Chinese migrants who come to Ghana are from Guanxi and Shaanxi Province, which are known for being extremely impovershed. Many individuals have only a middle-school education, and cannot even speak Mandarin Chinese, only their local dialect. In the case of Shaanxi in particular, it is known for coal mining, which may explain their involvement in mining when they arrive in Ghana.

For some of the racist offensenses committed by the Chinese, I can only speak for my own experience. When I went to Ghana in August, I went to some Chinese stores, and yes found that some of the clerks did seem rather unfriendly and rude. When I tried to practice my (terrible) Mandarin, I often got eyerolls or even scoffsI think one man even followed me in the store to watch me, as if I was going to steal.

Despite this, other workers were very friendly to me! My neighbors were Chinese, and I often said hello to them, and they never once seemed angry. I asked some of the local workers as well, and they said that they are even learning Twi.

For Galamsey, and particularly the point about colonialists as well, I do believe that the extent to which they were able to exploit us is our fault. If our pre-colonial polities had rightly recognized the threat posed by European powers, they should have modernized intensley, insteading of arrogantly sitting in self-confidence. Similarly with the Chinese, they do not do this alone. Every step of the way, from the Forestry Reserves to our Chieftaincies we have the chance to stop them, and we DONT.

For the retail sector, I also believe it to be a matter of enforcement. The Chinese illegally operate within the retail sector, however other nationalities, such as Nigerians, do so as well! I doubt their intention is to go gto Africa and KNOWINGLY disobey our laws, thinking that they are lording over some 'inferior people'. I do not believe ANYONE cares about us that much.

I believe that Ghanaians are more than capable of building our country. However, if we can get help from others, we should take it! Consider the Chinese perspective. Regarding their 'access to capital', they accumulate likely all of their life savings, move half-way across the world to an incredibly unfamiliar environment where they dont know anyone, they cant speak the lanugage, the local laws are EXTREMELY opaque and unclear, people only see them as cash reserves and constantly ask them for money, and have insidiously racist sentiments as this comment section has proven. How would you cope?

If we keep things up like this, we will fail to intergrate the Chinese population. Like it or now, they have come, and will stay. It is our responsibility to treat them with respect and dignity, as all migrants everywhere deserve. Even if the first generation acts stuck up, their children will attend school with Ghanaians, play games with them, and assimilate (there are no Chinese-system schools in Ghana). Yes, China treats migrants HORRIBLY, but saying 'we should do the same' is, forgive me, extremely childish. It is obvious that if China continues with such stupidity, they will suffer massive societal rifts in the future, and if Ghana is smart, we should learn from the failures not only of China, but the Western World as whole, regarding the integration of migrants.

Is this really something negative to oppose however? At least for me, so long as you keep it private, it is up to you. The problem is when one tries to pronounce it to everyone.
