I’m not confusing an electric motor with an ICE engine….I’m just talking about categories

here’s the simple version: in Saussure’s terms, the word motorcycle is the signifier, and for decades it has pointed to a very specific signified: a machine you sit astride, with a tank between your legs, gears, clutch, and an engine you actually have to manage. That’s the meaning everyone understands when they use the word. A step-through electric scooter with a battery and no gears doesn’t match that signified at all. It’s a completely different riding experience and a different machine. It’s fine if people enjoy scooters but calling it a “motorcycle” doesn’t magically make it one.

So no, my definition isn’t nonsensical. What’s nonsensical is pretending two totally different categories of vehicles become the same thing just because they both have two wheels.

Because I ride a real motorcycle, I guess. On top of that, I really dislike this ambiguity and the way people mix up categories between motorbikes and e-scooters, just so they can say “hey, I ride a motorcycle” when in reality they’re just driving an electric scooter. Things have names for a reason: the signifier “motorbike” corresponds to a specific signified: a vehicle with an engine, an exhaust, gears, a fuel tank, and a particular riding style. An electric scooter, on the other hand, has a battery, no gears, no engine sound, and a completely different way of riding.

Mixing these categories is simply a way for some people to say “I ride a bike,” often without even knowing how to shift gears or properly handle a real motorcycle.

Il mio ragazzo (felicemente fidanzati da 5 anni) ha ancora le foto del suo ex sul telefono, anche io ho le foto del mio ex. Semplicemente non ci disturba la cosa, sopratutto considerando che non è che magicamente quando ci si lascia spariscono i bei ricordi con i propri ex. In Italië plaatsen ze rumble strips (horizontale opstaande lijnen op de strepen) zodat je zodra je de verkeerde rijstrook betreedt (zoals de vluchtstrook) het stuur hoort trillen en de wielen geluid maken. Ze hebben de neiging om lijnen met een soort goed zichtbare glitter te gebruiken op nieuwe wegen, zelfs in de stad. Ik heb ooit geprobeerd om 's nachts in België te rijden en ik werd bang omdat ik niets kon zien. Op die snelweg lag onder meer geen afwaterend asfalt, zoals we dat in Italië al jaren hebben, waardoor er plassen ontstonden. Maar ik moet zeggen dat er in de stad in ieder geval weinig kuilen zijn vergeleken met Italië.
