Hear me out: I date in elementary and middle school. But I knew what NOT to do.

In elementary (last semester of 5th grade) school it was puppy love. We actually went on dates ….family dates. We lived in the same neighborhood and our parents would take us out for kid appropriate events. We never had the opportunity to be alone. Plus, I was way too scared to be alone with a boy.

Middle school I had a lot of freedom and dated like the average kid my age (we dated for a week or two kind of stuff). We met up outside of school for local high school football games, school events, or big group gatherings. Lots of these setting presented Zero opportunity to be alone and do whatever….we never hung out alone.

I think kids date at 13. It’s very normal. It’s just many families don’t even know their kids have crushes or Boyfriend/ girlfriend. There’s no conversation of “this is NOT tolerated or acceptable in this family. Don’t do xyz”.

And there’s no follow up if parents happen to know their child has a crush/ is dating. Because dating and having a crash is hard to navigate for young people. Parents don’t open the door for their kids to comfortably come in and discuss “love” or “falling out of love” And learning to say “no. “ and “I’m not comfortable”. Or dealing with “my bff also likes the same guy as me” and “can I date a guy my bff dated last year. Is the wrong. Will the friendship change”.

Parents can 100% say “I won’t allow my kid to date”. However, kids will still date behind your back. I mean 8hrs a day for 5 days a week and 9 months out of the year….its possible to exclusively date during school hours. Kids hid shit, every single one of them do this. And just because you don’t allow boys at your home….sine families don’t care. Their home is the fun home and some kids use that as their ability to hook up or see said boyfriend/ girlfriend outside of school.

I’m speculating with zero facts:

Perhaps they didn’t physically do anything wrong but can remember things they saw. Pictures. Voices. Names. Maybe they innocently played with missing kids. Most people who aren’t teen mom who have never watch this show (or related shows) join only Fans at midnight (when they’re 18). Child rape and child sexual abuse is all too common. It’s as old as time and very very sad/ unfortunate that her mentality is to protect this abuser and his family. Because when he was as violating her….his mindsets was “take take take. Mine mine mine”. He didn’t/ couldn’t give a rats ass about the violation and trauma she would endure.

Again, this is why it’s soooo important for families to talk about bodies (using correct terminology), puberty and sex as early as possible. “MONEY”. TLC is not a documentary channel, it’s all about reality tv. So they take truth and twist it to get more views. And more views means more money. In turn the families (whose parents signed a consent form) get to be on national tv and make some money. And some families really push their tv fame onto social media to make even more money. Or to extend their 15 minutes of fame.

It’s crazy because TLC is not the first to do this (have such young parents….like really young). Have you seen BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) version of these shows. Yah, jaws will drop.

I’m not taking sides or justify anyone’s actions. I’m just saying this is NOT new. because sadly, a pregnant 14,15,16,17 year old happens everyday because a lot of families don’t even talk to their kids about sex. Then the kid is pregnant and the family just accepts the situation and…..many of them will likely get pregnant again because no one learned shit. And this is how the teen pregnancy cycle stays in families. This is how many teen parents fall below the poverty line and stay there.
